I am not really sure how I feel about the whole Brandon Phillips or Omar Infante situation.

They're both the same age. Phillips contact is for 4 years at $50M. Infante wants 4 years at $40. That would save $10M and possibly about $5M more if we can get Infante for less, but that's to be determined. Phillips is still a great defender, and Infante is above average. Offensively Phillips had his worst year with the Reds, and Infante had the best year of his career. Neither look to be a factor with stolen bases. Infante actually walked less than Phillips last year percentage wise by about 1.7%. So just like Phillips, Infante would need to sustain a high batting average to have a decent OBP. In 2011 and 2012, Infante posted a .696 and .719 OPS respectively while Phillips posted a .810 and .750 in those years. So while Phillips offensive production has been falling the past two years, Infante had a considerably better year in 2013 than he had since 2010. Who knows if he'll continue that.

I sort of feel like I'd rather the Reds just keep Phillips and hope he rebounds offensively. I don't see any team wanting to give up a good player for Phillips considering the season Brandon just had and his contract.

If they had only pulled this off...

Matt Kemp and Brandon Phillips have been two of the offseason's biggest names rumored to be on the trade market, and there was a chance the two could've been dealt for each other in a blockbuster. The Dodgers and Reds "briefly spoke about" swapping the two All-Stars earlier this winter, according to Joel Sherman of the New York Post, but the Dodgers didn't have much interest. L.A. wasn't keen on adding an older player (Phillips is 32) who is owed $50MM through 2017, plus the Dodgers felt the deal wouldn't have been a fair swap if Kemp returned to full health.

The recent news with Infante is disturbing unless they are somehow magically going to get him to cut his price in half. The whole benefit to getting rid of Phillips in addition to making Castellini happy would be to free up the cash to keep Homer. Trading Phillips and signing Infante just brings in one high price declining veteran for another. And despite Infante having a career year last year he is still declining.

Sounds like Infante is going to the Royals for $30 million over 4 years....they must've been bored.

Reds offered a one-year contract to Bronson Arroyo according to Buster Olney.

Freel was one of those guys you fell in love with on the field because he wasn't the most talented, but he was going to leave everything he had and then some on the field. That style of play was ultimately what led to the numerous concussions he suffered. I feel the professional sports are finally taking concussions serious...even if Pete Rose feels they are overreacting.

I was front row on the bring back Choo train....but not that many years and not at that price.

So we have to look at it like this. Drew Stubbs netted us a year of Choo (with the Indians paying some cash) and a compensation pick. Now we're back to the pre-Choo offense where we don't have a viable leadoff hitter.

Barring on Walt making a move, we are depending on bounce back years from Frazier, Phillips, and Ludwick.

Jason are you forgetting we also gave up Gregorious? That was a much more valuable asset then Stubbs was. I hope Hamilton has an awesome year. If he can get a .375 OBP he will steal 75+ bases next year.

I'm not sure which one is a more valuable asset. Just getting rid of Stubbs seems darn near invaluable to me!

Best case for Billy Hamilton...a .300 obp, a better defender than Choo in CF, and between 70-80 stolen bases. If he can do that in his first year, we'll still miss Choo...but not as much.

The Reds won the division with Stubbs in CF twice. I think we will miss Choo, but it's not like it will be crippling. Hamilton is projected to have a 3 WAR next year, which is the same as BP and Bruce. I'd be definitely okay with that for his rookie year.
