I'm pretty sure he's made of porcelain. He or Ellsbury should replace the word fragile in a dictionary.

Anybody watch Houston hopelessly bombing 3 after 3 and think, "wow this is what the Yankees would look like if they were an NBA team?"

Do you guys think there's any correlation between their anayltcs-based results and ours from last year?

I do think that the mistake Houston (and the Yankees to some extent) have made is comparing the regular season to the post-season.

The three (true outcomes) offense works over the course of 82 or 162 games. But in the playoffs, the game changes completely. Whether it's the game being slower with refs holding whistles longer, or more power pitchers and rested bullpens showcasing 95+ mph fastballs, the game is played differently.

If the Yankees are the Rockets, then I would say the Astros are the Golden State Warriors. The latter two teams are also analytically heavy but with a mix of the old-style game to be successful when it truly matters.

Re: **The Official New York Yankees Thread**

I was just reading a Q&A with Morey in the Athletic and the parallels are unreal. He mentioned going against the Warriors leaves them with no margin for error, and in a (to change sports) world where there's an automated zone, you can count on that. But when the umpire is calling the pitch you've been getting all year on the low outside corner a ball, you can't keep throwing it there. There has to be something in the program where you can make an edit, add a variable.

Like you said, over 162 it works out because we can pencil in 30 losses as long as we're going to get 60 wins. When the season shortens, all of a sudden you've lost 3 in a row and there's no time to make it up. I'm really in favor of analytics but now that every team is using them, it's like we're in Analytics 202. It's not enough to have the numbers, we need to know what they mean. The human element and all that, it's fascinating.

Billy Beane is right that the playoffs are a crapshoot.

The Yankees lost three straight to Arizona. That's the season right there if this happens in the World Series, you know?

But, yeah, like you said, over the course of 162 games, losing three straight is nothing. It happens. Every team expects to lose three straight at some point.

This is also where I think it's easily forgotten that the playoffs are the best of the best teams. The Yankees or Rockets spend a lot of season beating up on bad teams. Sure an Orioles sneaks in that makes you wonder how in the heck did we lose so many games to them? But for the most part, great teams beat bad teams. And there are more bad teams than there are really good teams especially if you're one of those really good teams.

So those games where you're beating up on the #4, #5 starter in consecutive days are nice to bunch up some hits and pour in some runs. But the playoffs is a constant onslaught of every team's #1 and #2 pitcher and some of those #2s would be #1s on the bad teams you killed all season.

I don't really think the Yankees approach of taking pitches and hitting a three-run home run is going to be as successful against the Verlanders, Sales and Grienkes of the world.

Paxton taken out after 3 with an apparent injury. I’m not sure if one win over the twins is worth an injured starter, the baseball gods must be upping the exchange rate.

It's crazy how many people on our roster we came into the year expecting to get hurt, Paxton being one. Hopefully it's not too serious.

This is insane. By the end of the season every single player on their MLB roster will have hit the IL at least once at some point in the season at this rate.

I’ve gone back and forth on that. To be fair, they had nothing to do with Frazier, Paxton, and probably Hicks. The others do make you wonder if they changed something with the lifting program, or just aren’t doing enough flexibility training or something like that though.

I love D.J Lemahieu. This is why that was my favorite signing this guy makes contact. You can't understate how important a guy is that puts the ball in play is. Such a great table setter. Much needed at that.

This whole team is doing a much better job with contact this year. That is the one thing I don't like about Stanton. But this team is very balanced and Gio Urshela has been awesome.

I'm enjoying these unsung heroes. This team has alot of fight. Voit is slowly becoming a favorite. He just relishes being Yankee. You can tell he loves it. Bird who?
