Re: NBA Live 18 - Demo Impressions

I'll remain curious, but I don't like how this game feels at all. I feel like I'm picking up a controller for the first time on offense and I just don't get how these models move on the court at all. Dribbling feels like a non-starter for me and my offense wound up consisting entirely of Steph Curry pull up 40 footers.

I liked some of what I saw. The soundtrack was nice and while the sound quality and realism of the voiceovers left a lot to be desired it was nice to hear Breen, Van Gundy and Jalen in a video game. I just wish they didn't sound like robots, it really only feels fresh because there's a 0% chance we've heard their lines before. The halftime show was really cool besides Jalen's robotic delivery, reminded me of NFL 2K5's package.

I'd love for 2K to face some competition but I just don't see how this is it. Dribbling, passing, shooting, freaking LOOT CRATES (in a mode I couldn't care less about but still). Live seems like it has potential but I'm curious what next year will hold; this year is a hard pass (to be fair, I'm likely passing on 2K this year too after a decade-long streak of purchases).

Steph Curry pull up 40 footers screams of being stuck in 2K gameplay. Live doesn't cater to pull up 3s at all in the half court..I don't think I ever have success unless off a good screen. It's all about creating and making plays. Just start playing freely and it tends to play nicely. Counter the defense always.

What I like is that I can play on ball man to man defense in peace. Its not like the other game where your defensive teamates would just wonder off, come help for no reason. I can switch to the ball handler and keep playing man when the cpu passes it and not lose a beat. The defense side of the ball is relief in this game.

Re: NBA Live 18 - Demo Impressions

I spent a lot of time playing the demo today and EA has definitely created a great foundation for an exciting basketball game. Simply put, this game is extremely fun! I also agree with everyone about the excellent AI on the defensive end. I felt like I had to work to create my own looks and it wasn't easy to abuse the pick and roll/pop.

However, there are still a bunch of things that I hope can be fixed with sliders. I am managing to get a good challenge on Superstar but I have only lost one game against Golden State on default sliders. The one on one defense is way too easy on the perimeter and I should be getting punished more for guarding Steph too closely with Irving. Curry has had a few decent games but I have yet to see him have an efficient game. Klay also isn't involved in their offense.

On the offensive side I either need to turn off the shot meter or lower the jump shot sliders. It feels way too easy once you get the hang of the shot meter. Contested shots go in too much with Kyrie and Love. I also need to tinker with the layup sliders. Almost every player will make highly contested layups on a consistent basis.

My other major issue was fouls. They were almost non existant on default sliders. For my last game I maxed out shooting fouls for both sides and got good results. I shot 16 with Cleveland and Golden State had 14 (25 minute game). The game was an overtime thriller that I won 89-88. The pace was insane and obviously there was too much scoring for a 25 minute game. I am hoping that lowering my shooting sliders will fix the problem. I shouldn't be able to play at a frantic pace against the Warriors and still win.

All things considered I am having an absolute blast with the demo. Unfortunately I am concerned that a bare bones franchise mode will kill the game for me. NBA 2K18 will really need to drop the ball with game play for me to convert to Live. I can't justify making NBA Live my only basketball game without a robust franchise mode.

Something that I've noticed that has nothing to do with the game itself, but the people playing LIVE Run are absolutely brain dead. Everyone is just holding Left Stick towards the basket and throwing up contested layups. It's unrealistic, it's not enjoyable, and honestly it's an embarrassment. If you are one of these people please take notice and learn some stinking basketball! I thought some of the IQ in 2K Park was bad, this is just insane.

Great foundation for future. Shooting with the stick is horrible and delayed so i hope it can be fixed

Yes that area needs definite improvement. Hopefully even tweeked in final build.

A little more work on the shot stick

Even though I absolutely love the way step backs are done, I felt they should have left the right stick for dribbling only....too much stiffness and deadspots for my liking.....doesn't really feel like I'm dribbling with Curry or Kyrie...

Just feel a lack on individuality in general tnh.a guy like TT can have as big of an impact as a star it seems...Ive gone into half time with both bigs as leading scorers...Cavs needed this TT in the Finals, lol

The success of those contested shots is high so they keep trying no matter how many defenders are in their way

2nd impression: Playing "the One" as different players has helped me more than I expected. My on-ball defense has gone up tremendously to a point where I have to agree that this is the best 1-on-1 defense I've ever seen in a basketball game. The defense in general is sick. I couldn't shoot or do anything with the Cavs on Friday. I would get blown out by GSW or the games would be close but I still lost. Look at me now! Playing all day on Sunday has made me love this game even more and my first initial comments about cheese was premature. Really addicted to this game right now. Happy I played it all day. Ready for September!

I had a game where some kid went 4-15 and all of his shots were like that. But I'm sure a slasher type would make those shots consistently. Whatever the reasoning it's absolutely horrid to play.

I agree with most of what you said. I don't think this game is that much of competition, and I think a lot of people in this thread have been on the anti 2K train for awhile. Rose colored glasses all over the place. It has some promise. You don't care about The One mode, but I think it's fantastic. Playing the Drew, Rucker, Dyck, is great. But seeing them in this game all it makes me want is for those locales to be in 2K. Because 2K is a vastly superior game in a lot of ways, for me. I still can't get past the graphical differences, the cameras are whack, and it needs some gameplay tuning.

Guys are so dumb it's crazy. I'll have the ball, and 3 guys will come and set screens, or just stand there asking for the ball. And they leave their man on defense so much.

I think the park, and the people who 'grew up' on that mode, have been ruined for baseball gaming. They don't even want real basketball.
