Re: NBA Live 18 - Demo Impressions

I've been really enjoying the demo, there are some things that aren't perfect and the game needs some more animations, but overall the game plays pretty good. I like the slower pace, I've always been a broadcast view player...haven't played on the 2k cam or baseline cam in ages...in either game, and I have to say that the EA Action Low cam is great once you adjust to it. It lets you see the detail in the game, and while some don't care for the player models I think they look pretty good, I can easily tell who is who on the court.

The one on one interactions feel good, again, it could use some refinement, but I think it gives the feeling of being able to defend and not just let someone run around you, don't get me wrong...you can create space and blow by guys...but if the defender plays it right...they can get stops and force you to pass or pick up your dribble. I'm sure a lot of people will complain about the fouls...I did myself as well a little initially but really...it's the way it should be, I play a lot of basketball and the only time I actually attempt to steal the ball is against a terrible dribbler, otherwise...it's defend and don't foul, don't get beat or let them score, but rarely do I ever go for a steal against a good dribbler, and in the NBA there aren't many bad ball handlers. You can pull off the steals occasionally and I think it's pretty fair with the fouls/steals. One thing I've been playing with is using the right stick instead of the square or X button, if you flick it straight up when you defend a drive...it seems like there are fewer fouls, while the X button seems to be either a steal or more often just a foul...could be just me...but that's been my experience with it.

Blocking dunks...another area where I think some will be annoyed...but again, look at the NBA, watch a full game, not the highlight reel from several games. You don't see guys dunking on people constantly, and you'll get block often when driving straight at a defender and trying to dunk on them, that is if it's a bigger defender, the guards will get dunked on pretty easily, but bigs are not just getting dunked on and I think it's a good thing...this was for me a major problem with the live games (15'/16') there was basically no defense and you could just go to the paint all game and score almost at will no matter how hard you tried to defend. My son was getting pissed because I was dunking on him and he couldn't stop my dunks, then I pointed out to him, look at who you're trying to block with, of course he was using guards, because he wasn't getting his C/F back on defense and the guards are the faster guys on the court...then we looked at who I was blocking with, and with either team I would have a few blocks with both TT and/or Zaza.

Anyway...sorry for the long response...I think EA has a good game this year...I'll be getting both as I usually do, but I think they're definitely on the right track and this is something they can work with and improve year over year now.

One thing I love is how on a dead ball, it'll show highlights throughout the game. I wish 2K would add that.

      Thought this was nice:

Glad to hear that it's more appealing this year. I agree completely. A lot of work still to go, but not time strides.

Love that most seem to agree on the defensive side of the ball. I've been crossed more times than I can count from reading it wrong. On the demo, I think the defensive assist is too overpowered.
Have you played a version where was less effective? I feel it may be fine user vs user....but while I have def had the CPU pull some nice stuff on me it does feel over effective.....on SS i feel like I can freeze too many GSW possesions out.

Speaking of highlights.... I would like to see the post game highlights mostly from a broadcast view rather than up close. An occasional up close highlight would be fine but for the most part, highlights should be from a broadcast view. Madden has the same problem in the past so I guess it's an EA thing.

example: watch the Jaylen Brown layup around the 1:10 mark. All of EA's highlight are from a camera similar to that when they should be in broadcast with an up-close or even slow motion clip every now and then.

One thing I gotta say is I freaking LUV the replay button, seriously!

We all know sometimes we make a bucket that was pleasing or smth, and we want to rewatch it real quick. Then we have to pause the game, rewind the replay, get the camera in a good position and replay it out, kinda of totally breaking the immersion in the game. Such a small thing as the replay button on the R3 makes the action non-stop, and it feels so natural and its so freaking pleasing! Its been in live in the past and I'm very happy its back

Re: NBA Live 18 - Demo Impressions

Played the demo throughout the weekend when I had the chance and the more I play the more I like it. If you are someone that has strictly or mostly played 2k over the years it takes time to get used to the feel and control of the game. Based on control and feel I wouldn't necessarily say one is better than the other just that both are good on their own right once you get the feel and movement down.

I was playing a game last night and suddenly in the 4th quarter it started to click for me. I think turning off the ability to shoot with the stock helped as well as I no longer had to worry about shooting accidentally. For me, the dribble and shot stick doesn't feel quite as right as it does in 2k where it feels more seamless. Looking forward to spending more time with this demo. Still on the fence about whether to purchase or not. Might be able to get my fix out of the EA access trial.

I cranked up the fouls to get more realistic numbers and it did give me some good numbers but.....

There was a ridiculous amount of and 1s. Maybe something to look into.

Nothing scripted or pre-determined, I can't tell what's about to happen until it happens.

Does that make sense ?? Anyone else seeing this ?
I think part of it is that this is a new game so we haven't learned the animations that can be scripted or predetermined. Everything feels and looks new and fresh right now but in a month or sonim not sure the game will feel as organic.

Similar things happen to me with 2K each year. The first impression will be "wow this feels less scripted and more responsive" then after weeks with the game it will get that familiar 2k feel.

Having only spent a few days with the game I can definitely see instances that could be a result of scripted sequences. There have been moments when a layup or dunk is initiated and there is no stopping it. Same with blocks at times. However that's not to see there aren't moments where the opposite happens as well. I've seen some amazing blocks out of no where and layups where the defender is in great position only for the ball handler to eurostep or double clutch to avoid the defender.

I hate shooting with the shot stick (in LIVE and 2K)...call me old school I guess, but I just never could get myself to warm up to it ever since 2k introduced it. I wanted to turn it off in LIVE, but I am unsure if this will eliminate the ability to perform a step back shot or the ability to choose between a right handed or left handed layup, etc. Are we still able to perform these moves without the shot-stick (i.e. pushing the L-stick in a certain direction while pressing the shoot button)?

As far as my impressions....I am an older gamer who used to love LIVE, mostly in the 90's. I am also actually one of those "weirdos" who really enjoyed the March Madness series. But this is the first LIVE I have even touched since 05?....since then I've only played 2K. I'm strictly an offline (Franchise mode), broadcast camera player (if that matters to anyone).

It took me a good while to get out of 2K mode, but my initial thoughts were underwhelming. But for some reason I keep going back to it. I am not sure what it is exactly....I feel like I can nit-pick this game to death and tell you exactly what I hate about this game from the player models, the stiff animations, the ball interactions with the rim, the sounds of blocks and steals, cpu ai, the stupid way players stand at the FT line waiting for the ball, the lack of player personalities (seeing Klay, K-Love, Draymond, Lebron all do the same Curry pose after shooting a three is really annoying), the way passes seem to float in the air....I can go on.....
It's easier for me to name what I don't like than it is for me to name what I do like. But I still keep wanting to play the demo. As others have already said in this thread, it's just fun. It is frustrating because I go back and play 2k17 and wish it had some elements of the demo....and vice versa. I really want to like Live again....this is definitely a step in the right direction. I will probably hold out on buying until i read some impressions on the final build. I wonder how close or far the demo is from the final release? Does anyone have any insight on this?
Like I said, its been a while since I have owned Live so everything is new and fresh to me. Which may be the reason I keep coming back to the demo
                        "Basketball is my favorite sport
I like the way they dribble up and down the court
Just like I'm the King on the microphone so is Dr. J and Moses Malone"

You should be able to do stepbacks and spin backs by holding the LS away from the hoop when shooting. You can also double tap shot + RT for euro and double tap shot for spin. Can't choose hand though when using just the shot button.

NBA Live 18 Controls List guide shows you the commands & button layout for basic & advanced offense & defense moves, how to pass & shoot etc.

                                NBA Live 18 controls list
and don't forget u can manipulate various things with sliders.

I wish the jump shot could feel heavier tho. can't do nothing about it with sliders.
it feels too light especially after the release. I can't feel the weight and momentum. want some gatherness before the shooting too.
maybe it's the weirdness that people's talking about.

I really like the footprinting, physics, reboundings and 1 on 1 defense.

oh, the shot meter jerkiness. it just doesn't moove as smoothly as others. feels like 30fps. annoying af.
