    Re: 2014 Draft Class

I never understand anyone that hates when teams get charges on the other team. You will still see Duke get charges. Because they are playing small.

Melo or PP couldn't make that play.

Because sometime around 1998 Duke made it their primary objective on defense and for reasons that I still don't understand officials were more than happy to play along. Duke mastered the "slide under a player that's already leaving his feet" nonsense and the refs just let it happen. That's not basketball - now how it was once played or how it was ever supposed to be played. The only charges called should be the blatant, obvious one. Duke nearly always got the benefit of the doubt on a block/charge call when it should be the offense getting the benefit of the doubt.

I had to spend 15 years watching a mini bastardization of the sport because Duke started flopping and charges became way too prevalent in the college game. Once the main defensive goal of college basketball became to fall down it left me feeling a little chaffed.

Also, charges are down greatly across college basketball. Seth Greenberg was talking about it for a while last night during ESPN's studio coverage. The new rules make it much more difficult to draw charges.

i still find it a terrible disservice to a player to judge them on their defense when they are drastically out of position.

you may as well throw randle at SG and then judge his defense., it will be horrendous and then some...

Drastically out of position? He has played the 4 mostly for Duke. He has looked bad defensively there, and while I'm sure he's better at his natural position it won't make such a drastic improvement that he is suddenly a "good" defender.
If Parker was a SG playing the 4/5 I would agree with you, but he is 6'8 240, that isn't "undersized" for a PF.

I know this is sounding like I am very hard on Parker, but I think he is a fantastic player and will be a great pro. I just think he has a long way to go defensively to be a solid defensive player in the NBA.

And I'm like good hustle. Maybe he might play bad defense vs 4/5 right now (your opinion). I see a kid who hustling and making really good decision on both ends of the floor. And has the tools to play good defense. I've seen him make (just too many) plays on the defensive end in the few games he's played to say he can't get better.

He's starting at the PF spot, not the center. I think he is not a good defender right now. If he was playing 30 minutes a game at the 5 you might have a point, but he mostly plays at the 4.

Excellent block in transition. Blocks and steals don't automatically equal good defense. A lot of defense doesn't show up in the stat sheet. I love his motor (Randle's as well) and I never said he couldn't get better. He obviously can, and I expect him to. From all accounts he's an extremely hard worker and has a good motor. He obviously has the tools as well, or he wouldn't be a projected top 3 pick right now.

FWIW, a lot of Duke fans (myself included) are getting tired of Josh Hairston continuing to try and draw charges.

                    Re: 2014 Draft Class

Tough night for a lot of our top prospects in the draft this year.

Jabari went 7/21 for 19 points, but only 3 rebounds and 1 assist, along with 5 turnovers. He just really struggled to do anything against Aaron Gordon and one of the other guys that defended him (Brandon Ashley maybe?)

Marcus Smart put up an efficient 17 points and 8 rebounds, but only 3 assists to 5 turnovers, and missed all 3 of his free throw attempts in the final minute to give Butler a chance to steal the win.

Andrew Wiggins went 3/8 for 10 points and 3 rebounds, along with 4 turnovers. He did have two huge defensive plays to keep Kansas alive though, with a nice block from behind and a strip at the end of the game. He also supposedly was playing with the flu, but who knows.

On the flip side, Joel Embiid had a nice 10 points and 5 rebounds in only 12 minutes (but fouled out in 12 minutes).

He and Aaron Gordon were the two most impressive guys tonight IMO (at least out of the top draft prospects). Gordon put up a nice line of 10 points, 7 rebounds, 4 assists, and 2 blocks, and did a great job defending Jabari Parker. He's a lot more skilled than I realized.

Wiggins slowly getting exposed. Not his fault, the media hype was far too excessive. He could end up a fine player but he ain't no Kobe or Lebron. At this point I have a tough time seeing him as a Paul George

Finally someone see what I been saying lol. You can't tell me he's in cruise control. It's still early. But March will really be the deciding period for these guys.

                        I'd take Parker right now.

i dont think its fair to judge jabari off his stats alone last night, he got ALOT of arizona players in foul trouble and was constantly attacking the basket, its not his fault that refs swallowed their whistles
