        Pistons to sign Ratliff

LOS ANGELES -- The Pistons are about to land the veteran big man they've coveted -- and his name isn't Dale Davis.

The Minnesota Timberwolves placed veteran center Theo Ratliff on waivers Thursday night and have agreed to buy out the remainder of his $11.6 million contract.

If Ratliff clears waivers in the next 48 hours -- which is almost a given with his salary -- he will sign with the Pistons for the prorated amount of the veteran's minimum ($1.3 million).

Ratliff, 34, was drafted by the Pistons in 1995. He has only played 12 games the last two years, but he is healthy now.

He played in the last 10 games with the Timberwolves, averaging 6.3 points and 3.9 rebounds.

Great comeback tonight. I didn't see it, but I saw Seattle was just lights out in the first. Was it just a case of the Sonics being red hot to start, or were the Pistons just out of it defensively and looking ahead to Boston?

Either way, nice comeback, and I can't wait for tomorrow/tonight's game.

Also, is anybody else excited about Ratliff's return? Assuming he's healthy, I feel really good about having Rasheed, J-Max and Theo in the paint on defense.

Yeah, actually despite the joke, I am glad Dumars went out and got him. I am in no way living in a dream world where I think he will be anywhere near he was several years ago, but he's an experienced big and I expect still serviceable defensively. I haven't seen him play in a long time, so part of my excitement is seeing just how much he's regressed though.

I didn't get to see the game last night either, just an excerpt on NBA Coast to Coast. It was the third quarter with the Pistons down by a couple, but Billups was giving Durant a crash course on defense.

They were on fire early. I think it took a while for the Pistons to wake up, but they locked down defensively once they did. You can never have too many big men so having Theo back can only help at some point in the playoffs. Tonight should be fun.

Good effort by the Pistons. KG really decided the game IMO, as did the play of Chauncey's 4th quarter.
In the 4th quarter Chauncey was 0 pts, 0-2 fg, 0 asts, and 3 fouls.

Too many dry spells on offense last night. I hope we see seven games of this in the coming months.

Nice job tonight, but in my opinion...we got issues.

This team is falling into the same trap last year's team did. The energy level is fading, and they're not taking these games seriously anymore. The debacle in Utah, the listless start and lackluster finish in Boston, the Philly game, and the 4th quarter tonight. There's just not a lot of fire right now. They didn't even look like they were trying to run any kind of offense in the 4th tonight, they were just passing the ball around the perimeter and jacking up a 3.

When are they going to learn that you can't just turn it on in the playoffs? If Flip even trying to hammer this point home?

                              BTW...

2003-2004: the Pistons went 16-4 in March and April headed into the playoffs. End result: NBA title.

2004-2005: the Pistons won 11 games in a row before losing the season finale (which was meaningless) headed into the playoffs. End result: Coming up one quarter short of repeating as champions.

2005-2006: 3-4 finish headed into the playoffs (granted, 64 wins made those last couple obsolete); Ben Wallace's blowup at Flip was on April 7th. End result: A team that was mentally distracted, barely escaped Cleveland and had nothing left in the tank and got steamrolled by Miami in the ECF.

2006-2007: 17-10 in March and April (good), but still wildly inconsistent at times, much like now, where it seems like they're just going through the motions (bad). End result: Lapses in focus and determination that nearly cost them vs. Chicago and DID cost them vs. Cleveland.

I just can't help but think that this team is already looking ahead to an ECF against Boston, when:

                              a) There's a potential Semifinal matchup against a very dangerous Orlando team

                              b) If they simply try to "turn it on" against Boston if they reach the ECF, the Celtics will squash them.

                              BTW...what was the difference between 2003-2004/2004-2005 and 2005-2006 and 2006-2007? I forget...

(All this after a win too. Yeesh.)

Hahaha, I would hate to see what you woud've posted if the Pistons lost that game last night.

But seriously, those are legit gripes. One has to wonder how this goup of Pistons will respond in these regular season games as the playoffs draws near. They should come to play hard night in and night out instead of picking their moments, like they tried to (and failed) against the 76ers earlier this week. Plus the Spurs were missing Bruce Bowen and Ime Udoka, and I can't help but to think the results might've been different if these guys were playing. Coach Pop would've had Bowen guarding Rip quickly once Rip got hot.

Anyway, I can see why he's doing it, but I really don't like coach Saunders playing Juan Dixon over Arron Afflalo in his current tweaking of the rotation. Afflalo just bring that high-level energy that the rest of the team often don't show. He should at least get more playing time in home games while Dixon gets a little more playing time in road games, where there is usually more adversity. Love the way Theo Ratliff has been playing for the Pistons so far, even though I would still like to see Amir get some PT.

The Hornets are next of a series of visiting West squads in this homestand. Should be a good game.
