When its all said though, Cleveland is in trouble.Originally posted by VP Richard M. NixonI always remember that whatever I have done in the past, or may do in the future, Duke University is responsible one way or the other.

Re: ***Official Detroit Pistons Thread***
As a longtime Pistons fan, this elegy at the Pistons wake was a long time coming...
It's always amazing to me how quickly windows of opportunity close in professional sports. Honestly, I'd be okay with the inevitable demise of the 'Stones dynasty if they had just won 1 more championship with this nucleus. They were better than the Spurs in 2005, and should definitely have won that series (I still say they would have if they had not dumped Corliss Williamson for essentially nothing....can't give up inside D and post points from your bench). If 'Sheed doesn't leave Horry to double Parker in the corner in game 5 (something that will haunt my sports psyche for the rest of my life, like the Isiah inbounds pass to Bird in the '87 Eastern Conference Finals), we're the back-to-back NBA champs. The fact that one stupid brain fart cost the Pistons a second title, followed by the unceremonious running-out-of-town of Larry Brown, followed by the Flip Saunders debacle, and it all adds up to a real feeling of emptiness for Pistons fans that they really left a title or two on the table. I still have fond memories of this squad, but in the end it was just 1 title short of what I feel they should've been able to accomplish given how much better than the rest of the league they were.
In retrospect, Ben Wallace leaving was the beginning of the end, but there was nothing we could/should do about that; Joe Dumars did the right thing by not re-signing him (as has been borne out in subsequent years). Wallace leaving never made sense to me; it's fine Ben made a lot of money, but he still would've been a multi-millionaire in Detroit had he stayed, he just would've been loved and embraced forever (maybe even had his number retired) as opposed to turning into an unhappy journeyman bench warmer that he has subsequently become. He probably would've also gotten to play for another title at some point. Dealing Chauncey was the death blow, but I don't disagree with the move in principle. We weren't going to go anywhere with the same team that had failed the previous 4 seasons, and it was time to break up the band...What I disagree with, though, was the timing of it all - if you're going to unload him, why not do it either before the season or wait until the end of this year? It made no sense to do it 10 games into the season or whatever, and it ultimately just deep-sixed the entire year. I know Joe D is wary of hanging onto guys from nostalgia (as he learned during the painful aftermath of the Bad Boys era), but there's a time and place for everything. I imagine that there will be few, if any, pieces remaining from those title years in a year or two. 'Sheed is as good as gone, and if we can get anything for Rip we should definitely let him go as well. The guy it just breaks my heart we could never get that title for was 'Dyess; too classy, too good, worked too hard to never get that ring. That's why I wanted that title against San Antonio in 2005 more than anything; to get it done for Dice would have been nice. Chalk that up to the many, many laments of the Piston fan.
All in all, toughest year for the 'Stones in a long time. Terrible team, disharmony from the top down, suffered some monumental losses in the organization (Bill Davidson, Chuck Daly), and the future is totally uncertain. I think we're headed for another 1990's malaise, although hopefully for not too long. This past era of dominance was great, enjoyable, and ultimately, unfulfilling. Such is sport. Such is life...Comment

Re: ***Official Detroit Pistons 2006-07 Thread***
^^^ LOL I forgot Williamson was a part of the roster at some point. But those are the guys the Pistons need - hard workers who don't care about their playing time or stats. That's the heart of the Pistons. Hope we'll see that again some day...My Specs:

Re: ***Official Detroit Pistons Thread***
I assume they won't be able to sign anyone max next year and quite frankly don't think they ever really had a chance to anyways. Most of those FA are going to stay with thier teams as they can get more money and more years from them. Not too mention with changing coaches once a year and not being a real contender I cannot see a big name player coming to play in Detroit when he has a lot of other options
Detroit's best bet at any big name players is trying to work out some kind of trade for Amare or Bosh imo.Actually...believe it or not from my physique... I'm a light eater - Clay T. ShaverComment
