Free Throws Propel Princeton to Victory

      11/15/08 @ Boston University (1-1)

      Final: 80-71

Princeton used the foul line to ultimately win the game as they got to the line a stunning 53 times during the game. They would converst 37 of those attempts, as this was the key stat of the game for the Princeton Tigers. Princeton built a 45-34 halftime lead and led by as much as 18 in the second half before letting the lead dissolve to only five points in the final 30 seconds. "We got to the foul line a whole lot," commented Coach Frizzell. "This win was key for us since we needed to get back on track after the Michigan loss. This win was not easy, though, as playing on the road is never and easy thing to do." Princeton only shot 42% in the game, but free throws ultimately gave them the victory.

      Princeton Key Players
      M. Schroeder - 13 points, 4 rebounds, 4 assists, 2 steals, 9/10 FT
      M. Sow - 12 points, 5 rebounds, 2 assists, 3 steals
      L. Gunn - 19 points, 3 steals, 10/12 FT

      Boston University Key Players
      C. Lowe - 24 points, 2 assists
      M. Gotzler - 10 points, 7 rebounds, 2 assists

Princeton's record now stands at 3-2 as Coach Frizzell improves his career record to 21-13. Princeton will next host Central Connecticut State (0-2) on November 18th.

Also, I will be switching back to 15 minutes for the rest of my games. I am scoring a little too much which is probably due to my fast pace of play. I still love these sliders, though!

Tough loss versus Michigan. I know all too well the feeling of allowing the other team to score at will. All you can do is use your time outs and emphasize defense and then do your best not to give up an easy shot.

Nice bounce back win versus Boston. 53 foul shots?!!?!?!?! Holy crap! What is normal for you? I drive with stud slashers 24/7 in my games and I have never seen that before. Did they have anyone left in the game by the end? I would think half the team would be fouled out. If you include non shooting fouls they must have had like 30 fouls!

Good luck keeping it going. I kinda think its cool how you are bring Princeton to a fast pace offense. Do you plan on staying there long term and building them into the "Memphis of the Ivy league"?

Yeah, we had Michigan's offense controlled in the first half, but they just went absolutely lights out in the second half. It is very frustrating when that happens and there is nothing you can do.

It was wild! I don't think I had went over 30 foul shots in the entire legacy before I played this game, but they were fouling me like crazy! I got in the double-bonus in the first half and had around 20 or so foul shots already, which is a lot for me for the entire game. They kept on fouling my bigs, too, on turnaround jumpers and hook shots. Towards the end of the game, they intentionally fouled me on like 10 straight possessions since they kept on hitting clutch threes to bring it closer and I kept on missing free throws (I missed like 7 out of my last 10). It probably won't happen again anytime soon and hopefully will not as the game took forever to play with me being at the foul line so much. Hopefully it was just one of those crazy games and I am pretty sure it was.

I don't recall anybody fouling out, though I really didn't pay too much attention to that. I'm sure somebody did, though.

Yeah, I originally tried to play a more Princeton style offense towards the beginning of the legacy and tried to run set plays and such, but I eventually found myself running up and down the court, which is just more fun to me. Add to that the fact I really don't have any reliable shooter besides Lincoln Gunn and to an extend Michael Strittmatter and that I have some pretty fast players, so I run a lot. I like it a lot, actually, and even though this team can be really frustrating since they don't shoot threes like last year's team, they are a blast to play with.

I look to stay in the mid-majors or small conferences for my entire career. I really don't care to go to a power conference since I like being in a weaker conference and building a true powerhouse mid-major like Memphis. I will probably jump if I get an offer from Gonzaga from the WCC, or for some Missouri Valley Conference teams possibly. I may eventually go to the Atlantic Ten as well, but never to a power conference most likely, but time will tell I suppose. I won't be leaving Princeton for just any job, but will probably for one of those jobs I just mentioned. Of course, if I never get an offer I want, I won't go, or if I have built Princeton into a powerhouse already I may not go, but we shall see. I'd really like the Gonzaga job and am hoping Coach Few leaves, but we'll see. Southern Illinois is a desirable job to me, as well, as is Xavier and UNC Charlotte, as those would be my top four choices. We'll see, though!

            Press Conference

Coach Frizzell met with reporters today to discuss how he thinks his team has performed in the first few games. "I think we have played pretty well," he said. "We had a couple rough games against Temple and Michigan, but I still was not too disappointed about those games. In fact, I was somewhat pleased. We were tied at 37 at halftime in the Temple game and were ahead of Michigan 40-35 at halftime in that game, so we played a good first half, we just couldn't finish it off. I have been fairly pleased with our performance thus far."

Coach Frizzell also talked about how he had picked up the pace of his offense this season. "Well, our team this year isn't quite as adept to shoot the three pointer; however, we can run like the wind and have some good big men down low. I told our guys to push the ball up the court more. Marcus Schroeder, our starting point guard, is really having a good time running this type of offense. Last year, we usually walked the ball up court, but he is really having a good time pushing the ball and I think that is showing up on his performance, as he is playing much better than last year so far. Our whole team has played well, in fact, and I think it makes it hard to defend us. But right when you think we are going to run again, we pull the ball up and work a half-court game. I also have stressed getting the ball down to our big men. I think this really gives us a lot of scoring opportunuties, because if the post man can back down the defender a bit, he can either score from the post or draw the double team, in which he can pass the ball out to an open shooter."

Princeton Buckles Up On Defense, Beats Central Connecticut State by 14

11/18/08 vs. Central Connecticut State (0-2)

              Final: 62-48

After struggling a bit on defense in their first few games, Princeton buckled up on defense in this one, as they held Central Connecticut State to a season-low 48 points. Princeton only allowed Central Connecticut State to shoot 29%, including only knocking down 6/36 from downtown, or 17%. Princeton didn't exactly have a stellar offensive day either, as they only shot 41%, but it was good enough as solid defense propelled them to a 62-48 victory. Central Connecticut State actually held an early 20-9 lead, but was taken on a ride by Princeton, as the Tigers went on an 18-2 run to end the half up by five, with the score at 27-22. Princeton also held the lead for the entire second half as they cruised to a fairly easy home victory thanks to a stellar defensive effort. Coach Frizzell was impressed with his team's defense, saying, "I was glad to see us finally have a nice game on the defensive side of the ball. The Michigan and Temple games really got on to my nerves, so it was nice to allow Central Connecticut State to only score 48 points. We played man-to-man defense about half the time, but we also mixed in a lot of 1-3-1 zone and 2-3 zone. I really have not used a 2-3 zone much so far in my career, but I have been testing it the last couple of ball games and really like my results, so expect to continue seeing it as a change of pace from our man-to-man and 1-3-1 zones that we have typically run. All in all, it was a very nice effort on our part and a hard earned win!"

              Central Connecticut State Key Players
              J. Washington - 10 points, 4 assists
              M. Palmer - 15 points, 9 rebounds

              Princeton Key Players
              M. Schroeder - 11 points, 4 rebounds, 4 assists, 2 steals
              R. Rodriguez - 12 points, 5 rebounds, 4 assists
              M. Sow - 13 points, 7 rebounds
              Z. Woolridge - 5 points, 13 rebounds

Princeton improves to 4-2 on the season as Coach Frizzell moves his career record to 22-13. Next up, Princeton travels to the Northeast to take on the New Hampshire Wildcats (1-3) on Saturday, November 22nd.

Hmm, a run-and-gun like style offense at Princeton. What would Senator Bill Bradley think?

Another nice win. So you are having success with the zones. I gave these a good try but perhaps they are just not doable in the bigger programs that are filled with all the 3 point shooters or perhaps I am just not good enough of the sticks to make it work. Regardless, nice job on a solid win. It looks like you are separating yourself from the bottom feeders and moving the school up a tier. Hopefully the recruits will see that and you will start to get the next level of recruiting there.

Yes, I used strictly zone early on in this legacy, but have been forced to go with more man defense since I was getting hammered from the three point line. Now, I used about 1/2 man, 1/4 1-3-1 zone, and 1/4 2-3 zone and it works pretty well, at least for now. I started off this legacy using only 1-3-1 zone, but was demolished from three. One plus of the zone is that I can get a lot more steals, but a lot of shooters are left open. I use more zone against teams who are not good shooters, but more man versus teams with good shooters. I think I should have used strictly man against the Wolverines, because they were shooting LIGHTS OUT!!!

Yeah, my goal is to win the Ivy League this year and maybe get into the top 25 mid-major poll, and a halfway-decent seeding in the Big Dance (Maybe a 12 or 13). We shall see, though as things can change quickly.

Princeton's Defense Clamps Down Again as Princeton Begins "Cupcake Brigade"

                          11/22/08 @ New Hampshire (1-3)

                          Final: 75-48

Princeton jumped out to an early lead as they lead by 20 points only 10 minutes into the game and led by 23 at halftime as the Princeton Tigers held a 38-15 lead over the New Hamsphire Wildcats as the two teams headed off to the locker room. It seemed as if the same defensive intensity of Princeton's game against Central Connecticut State was carrying over into this game, and it indeed was. New Hampshire only was shooting 24% from the field in the first half and was 0/10 from three point range. New Hampshire would shoot better in the second half as they shot 44% and they would get on a little bit of a run early as Coach Frizzell pulled his starters and New Hampshire cut the lead to 19 points. Coach Frizzell countered by replacing his backups and once again put in his starters, causing Princeton's lead to once again swell, at one point reaching 28 points. Coach Frizzell would pull his starters again halfway through the second half with the game well in hand and the backups got some practice time as Princeton cruised to what was quite possibly the most dominating performance of the James Frizzell era at Princeton, as they beat New Hampshire on the road by 27 points with the score 75-48 in Princeton's favor. "We played a fantastic game and really clamped down on defense," commented a very pleased Coach Frizzell. "We played a lot of man-to-man defense and we frustrated them and we got the victory because of that. We played just about a perfect game and I couldn't be more proud." Princeton hit 51% of their shots compared to New Hampshire's 34% and was dominant at getting to the free throw line, hitting 20/30 from the charity stripe. New Hampshire started the game 0/16 from three, but hit 3 of their last 4 shots to improve to 3/20 for the game, or 15%.

                          Princeton Key Players
                          D. Allen - 11 points, 2 rebounds, 2 steals
                          M. Sow - 11 points, 5 rebounds, 3 assists, 2 steals
                          L. Gunn - 16 points, 2 rebounds, 2 assists, 3 steals
                          Z. Woolridge - 8 points, 11 rebounds

                          New Hampshire Key Players
                          J. Cheslock - 10 points, 2 rebounds, 2 steals
                          C. Nahra - 11 points, 9 rebounds

Princeton improves to 5-2. Coach Frizzell's career record now stands at 23-13 as he moves 10 game ahead of .500. Princeton is very capable of beating the rest of their non-conference opponents as most people consider Princeton to be vastly superior to every opponent that remains on their schedule until conference play begins in January. Next, Princeton will take on Mouth Saint Mary's (1-4) on November 28th.

Princeton Beats Mount Saint Mary's by 10

                            11/28/08 @ Mount Saint Mary's (1-5)

                            Final: 66-56

Princeton jumped out to an early lead via some good shooting as they shot 51% in the game. They jumped out to an early lead on Mount Saint Mary's which led to a 35-29 halftime advantage for the Princeton Tigers. The Mountaineers of Mount Saint Mary's could not do much more in the second half as they were not dominated, but certainly kept under control, as they were outscored by four points in the final period of play leading to a comfortable 66-56 win for the Princeton Tigers on the road to close out the month of November. Coach Frizzell commented, "We played well and once again played some very good defense. We were a little careless with the ball as we turned the ball over 11 times and were not good at turning Mount Saint Mary's over as we only forced one turnover. Yes, a single turnover, that's it. Props to them, but luckily we pretty much dominated every other facet of the game except on the offensive boards, which is something we have had trouble with this entire year. We will certainly be looking into that."

Princeton Recovers From Slow Start to Beat Saint Francis in Overtime

                                12/2/08 @ Saint Francis (NY) (2-5)

                                Final: 75-68 OT

Princeton got off to a very slow start as they came out very sluggish and found themselves quickly down by 10 points ealrly in the first half. However, after a few timeouts to stop the momentum and the sixth man advantage, Coach Frizzell was able to rally his troops as Princeton embarked on a long run and would find themselves up by four at halftime with the score 33-29 in their favor. Princeton would stay ahead most of the second half, but would not get more than an eight point lead. In the closing minutes Saint Francis mad a late run and would tie the game at 62 after a made basket with only 33 seconds remaining. Coach Frizzell called a timeout with 10 seconds remaining and drew up a play. The play worked well as Martin Sow, who had a double-double, was fouled and would convert both free throws to give Princeton a 64-62 lead with 5.8 seconds remaining. Princeton elected to pressure in the backcourt resulting in a long pass that would somehow in up in Saint Francis' hands. The shot was put up and the basket was drained as the buzzer sounded to tie the game at 64 apiece and send the game to an extra period. Princeton thoroughly dominated overtime as they outscored Saint Francis 11-4 in the extra period to earn a hardfought 75-68 victory on the road. "We came out very slugglish," Coach Frizzell explained. "We really did not play a very good game of basketball at all, we just got lucky Saint Francis had a bad night as well. We played good defense again, but we cannot have such horrific starts if we want to continue winning." Princeton shot 42% from the field to Saint Francis' 35%, but Saint Francis attempted 20 more shots thanks to 34 Princeton free throw attempts, 22 of which were converted. "We have really been getting to the line well," Coach Frizzell commented. "I stressed that we needed to get there often and we have done our job in that sector."
