Princeton's Win Streak Halted at Five as They Fall to Holy Cross by 10

    12/6/08 vs. Holy Cross (5-3)

    Final: 67-77

Princeton came out of the gates rather sluggish once again, but this time never recovered, falling to the Holy Cross Crusaders, who, after beginning the season 5-0, have endured a three game losing streak. Princeton got back in the game late in the first half and was only down 38-36 at halftime, but was outscored by eight points in the second half en route to a 10 points victory for Holy Cross. "That was an embarrassing performance!" exclaimed a livid Coach Frizzell in a post-game news conference. "I told you that if we kept on coming out sluggish, we would eventually lose and we did. We have been so lazy lately and we need to get back to basics. We come out lazy early in the game expecting our talent level to carry us past our opponents, then we realize we actually have to try, then we get it going and still have been able to win the last few games, but not today. We came out lazy and left lazy. We need to try harder. There is nothing worse than a bunch of guys half-heartedly running up and down the court with no passion, desire, or love for the game. We will be ready for our next game. I can assure you of that."

    Holy Cross Key Players
    L. Dixon - 21 points, 2 assists, 2 steals
    Z. Paterick - 13 points, 2 rebounds, 3 assists, 2 steals
    A. Vander Baan - 20 points, 5 rebounds, 3 assists, 2 steals

    Princeton Key Players
    D. Allen - 14 points, 7 rebounds, 2 assists
    F. Djordic - 20 points, 5 rebounds, 5 assists

Princeton falls to 7-3. Coach Frizzell's career record no stands at 25-14. Next up Princeton will play Quinnipiac (3-5) on Monday, December 8th.

Nice streak you had going with 5 in a row. Now the key is to get back on the horse and onto the next winning streak. It really looks like you have this team geared up and playing solid ball right now. What post can I go to if I want to read about future recruits that you are bringing in and recruiting/targeting?

Yeah, we were playing pretty nicely until that last game, though the schedule remains weak so we should be fine.

I haven't actually posted any of the recruiting targets (I'm too lazy), but here are the ones I am looking at right now. Keep in mind we just exited the early signing period.

I'm really only looking at three guys right now as I only have one scholarship to offer. I am also looking at a few juniors, but here are the seniors that I am looking at.

        1. Wendell Lalugba - SF - 6'6" 210 - New Bedford, MA - *** - 82% (Scholarship Offered)
        - We lead his list as #1 in front of Rhode Island who is the only other team with interest in him.
        2. Jerard Robbins - SF - 6'5 204 - East Rutherford, NJ - ** - 83%
        - We are 1st on his list in front of Hartford, Columbia, and Iona
        3. Britton Moody - SF - 6'6" 210 - Durham, NC - *** - 74%
        - We are 8th on his list, so our chances on this guy are really low right now.

As you can see, I am really going after some small forwards, which we really could use one. We have a power forward starting at small forward right now, so I would really like to get a true small forward with the scholarship.

Princeton Continues Freefall With Loss to Quinnipiac

          12/8/08 vs. Quinnicpiac (3-6)

          Final: 69-72

Princeton finally played a decent first half in this game with the score tied at 32 as both teams went to the locker room. However, unlike Princeton's previos games, they would play a horrible second half leading to their second home loss in as many games. Princeton would find themselves down by 10 points with only three minutes remaining with the score 62-52. Princeton would find away to nail four three pointers in the closing minutes, but Quinnipiac knocked down their free throws and secured a close victory by a final score of 72-69. Coach Frizzell was once again very disappointed in his team's performance, saying, "We once again played lazily. We finally came alive in the last three of four minutes, but up until then, we played horribly. I can't believe we started 7-2, but now we have dropped two home games in a row. This is ridiculous, plain and simple." Princeton's Renardo Rodriguez was a bright spot for Princeton, however, as he tallied a career-high 25 points in the game, breaking his old career-high of 15 points. He had 14 points in the first half along. Rodriguez also dished out three assists and had 4 steals in the loss.

          Quinnipiac Key Players
          V. Crafton - 14 points, 4 assists
          J. Cruz - 10 points, 4 rebiybds
          J. Rutty - 7 points, 16 rebounds, 2 assists, 2 steals
          J. Feideine - 13 points, 2 rebounds

          Princeton Key Players
          M. Schroeder - 10 points, 5 rebounds, 4 assists
          R. Rodriguez - 25 points, 3 assists, 4 steals
          F. Djordic - 14 points, 7 rebounds

Princeton falls to 7-4 on the season. Coach Frizzell's career record now stands at 25-15. Next up for the Princeton Tigers will be the Cincinnati Bearcats (3-4) on the road. After that, Princeton will take on American (3-6), Lafayette (7-3), and Utah Valley State (3-9) before beginning Ivy League conference play on January 17th against Cornell (4-2), who they will play two straight games against to open up conference play.

Cincinnati Takes Care of Business Against Princeton at Home

            12/20/08 @ Cincinnati (4-4)

            Final: 85-73

Princeton hung around most of the game against a Cincinnnati Bearcat team who was clearly the more talented team. Cincinnati jumped out to an early 22-8 lead, but Princeton would find away to hang around and would only be behind by nine points at the half with the score 39-30. The second half would see more scoring as Cincinnati remained around 10 points ahead for most of the half, though they did extend the lead to 18 points once, but Princeton cut the lead down to eight with four minutes remaining. Princeton would get no closer, however, as they would fall to the Cincinnati Bearcats on the road 85-73. Coach Frizzell was fairly pleased with the game, saying, "We played much better than our previous two or three games. Sure, we lost by 12 points, but we did a lot of things right, too. Our offense was much better and our defense was pretty good, too. We did not really expect to beat Cincinnati on the road. They're too good a team for us. However, I hoped to keep the game from becoming a blowout and I think we did a pretty good job of keeping that from happening."

            Princeton Key Players
            R. Rodriguez - 10 points, 3 rebounds
            F. Djordic - 10 points, 3 rebounds
            M. Sow - 12 points, 2 rebounds, 3 assists, 2 steals
            C. Petrie - 11 points, 2 rebounds, 3 assists

            Cincinnati Key Players
            D. Vaughn - 21 points, 5 assists
            K. Hollis - 12 points, 2 renbounds, 2 steals
            A. Mitchell - 25 points, 3 rebounds, 3 assists

The Princeton Tigers fall to 7-5. Coach Frizzell's career record now stands at 25-16. Next up, Princeton will take on American (3-6) in 11 days on December 31st, Princeton's final game of 2008.

Princeton Beats American to Halt Three Game Losing Streak

              12/31/08 vs. American (4-7)

              Final: 64-60

Princeton finally halted the three game losing streak they had embarked on. American was certainly a worthy opponent for them to face. Though American was 4-7 coming into this game, they certainly had the talent to compete with a lot of teams. American would jump out on top in the early going as it looked to be yet another long day for Princeton. However, Princeton would not let this game get away as they pulled within five points as the buzzer sounded and the teams headed off to the locker rooms for halftime. After a fiery halftime speech by Coach Frizzell in the locker room, Princeton would come out with a renewed vengeance in the second half, as they would outscore American by nine points en route to a 64-60 victory. "We needed this win bad," commented Coach Frizzell in a post-game interview. "We had really been slipping. We got after it on the defensive side of the ball in the second half and on the offensive side, a total team effort on both sides of the ball, which was certainly what we needed. All in all, it was a fine game." Lincoln Gunn came from out of the woodwork in this game to score a career-high 25 points in the win. Gunn had proved to be a worthy sixth-man early on this season, but had been struggling mightily lately. However, he got his shots to fall in this one and propelled Princeton to victory.

              American Key Players
              F. Borden - 13 points, 5 rebounds, 3 steals
              G. Carr - 13 points

              Princeton Key Players
              L. Gunn - 25 points, 3 rebounds, 3 assists, 4 steals
              Z. Woolridge - 10 points, 4 rebounds, 2 assists

Princeton improves to 8-5 on the season after this much needed win. Coach Frizzell's record now stands at 26-16 after tonight's game. Next up for the Princeton Tigers is Lafayette (7-6) on Sunday, January 4th, 2009.

                  Princeton Dominates Lafayette 87-64

                  1/4/09 vs. Lafayette (8-6)

                  Final: 87-64

Princeton absolutely dominated this game from start to finish. From the opening tip to the final buzzer, Princeton never trailed as they held the lead for the entire lead in this dominating effort. Both Princeton and Lafayette shot over 50% from the floor, but the key was turnovers, where Princeton absolutely dominated. Coach Frizzell always values taking care of the basketball and his team always values the ball. That couldn't be more true in this game as Princeton only turned the ball over nine times and forced 22 Lafayette turnovers on the other end of the floor. "We really got out in the passing lanes and clogged them up and it really destroyed Lafayette's offense," commented Coach Frizzell after the game. "We shot well and executed well offensively, too. Anytime you can shoot over 50% from the field, you are donig pretty fine." Princeton had five players in double-figures in the game as they used a balanced attack to score a season-high 87 points.

                  Lafayette Key Players
                  A. Brown - 15 points, 2 rebounds, 5 assists
                  D. Banbow - 11 points, 4 rebounds, 2 assists
                  D. Visochkis - 11 points, 3 rebounds, 3 assists

                  Princeton Key Players
                  D. Allen - 13 points, 3 rebounds
                  F. Djordic - 11 points, 3 rebounds
                  M. Sow - 14 points, 2 assists
                  L. Gunn - 13 points
                  Z. Woolridge - 17 points, 4 rebounds

Princeton's record now stands at 9-5. Coach Frizzell's career record is now 27-16. Next up, Princeton will take on the Utah Valley State Wolverines (5-12) in the final non-conference matchup of the 2008-2009 season. The game will be played on Saturday, January 10th.

Yep, we seem to be having some momentum now as evidenced in my next game. I can't wait for conference play to begin!

Strong Rebounding Effort Leads to Blowout of Utah Valley State

1/10/09 vs. Utah Valley State (5-12)

                          Final: 71-45

Utah Valley State had to travel all the way across the country in this game, so they may have been at a disadvantage. Princeton certainly took care of that disadvantage as they whooped Utah Valley State by a final score of 71-45, a 26 point margin of victory. Princeton dominated from start to finish. Princeton held a 38-20 lead at halftime and never looked back. Utah Valley State did almost push back into the game towards the middle of the second half as they pulled within 12 points, but a Princeton run would push the lead back to 20 en route the the 26 points romp. Princeton held Utah Valley State to just 24% shooting. Princeton shot 47% in the game. The key however, was a stat in which Princeton has struggled at times with this season, as they out rebounded Utah Valley State 50-28. Coach Frizzell commented, "This was a really nice effort we put forth today. It is nice to see we are getting back on track after losing three in a row. Now we have won three in a row. We did a great job on the glass today and played some phenomenal defense as well. We played great and I hope we can keep it up as we enter into conference play against Brown next."

                          Utah Valley State Key Players
                          R. Toolson - 13 points, 2 rebounds, 3 assists
                          J. Olsen - 6 points, 5 assists

                          Princeton Key Players
                          R. Rodriguez - 15 points, 3 rebounds, 3 assists
                          M. Sow - 15 points, 9 rebounds
                          F. Djordic - 16 points, 8 rebounds
                          L. Gunn - 10 points, 3 rebounds, 3 assists

Princeton improves to 10-5 on the season. Coach Frizzell's record now stands at 28-16. Next up for Princeton is Cornell (7-5). The game will be played a week from now on Saturday, January 17th.

Well, sometimes I wish I had a different team. I wish I had more three point shooters. I probably will move to a mid-major if one that I desire comes calling (Manhattan, Southern Illinois, Illinois State, Creighton, Gonzaga), but I am pretty content here in Princeton. I guess we'll see, but I won't be leaving for just any job out there. It will have to be one that I want.

Clutch Shots Seal Win for Princeton

                              1/17/09 @ Cornell (8-5)

                              Final: 76-72

This was an exciting game that came down to the final minute to decide the winner. Princeton jumped out front early on and looked ready to romp Cornell as they did to Utah Valley State in the previous game. That would not happen, however, as Cornell would battle back to a six point halftime deficit with the score 35-29 in Princeton's favor. Princeton would hold the lead for much of the second half, until some clutch shots by Cornell put them up by one point with one minute remaining. Coach Frizzell elected to put the ball in Renardo Rodriguez's hands, who had 18 points in the game and has arguably been Princeton's best player for the past few games. Coach Frizzell called for some isolation and Rodriguez worked his man, driving towards the basket, then pulling up for a fade away 14 footer which bounced off the front of the rim, then against the backboard before finally landing in the bottom of the net for a score. Chris Petrie somehow stole Cornell's inbounds pass and converted it for a score to make the score 73-70. Cornell would score on the ensuing possession to make the score 73-72 with 38 seconds left. Princeton would get the ball for the entire shot clock, then Cornell would get one last chance. With the shot clock running down and Princeton up by one, Renardo Rodriguez drove towards the basket, then found a wide open Marcus Schroeder for a three pointer from the elbow which made the score 76-72 with five seconds left, all but sealing the game. "What a great performance by our guys," Coach Frizzell told a reporter after the game. "We really came through in the clutch there and our young guys performed. It was an exciting game. It's nice to open up Ivy League conference play with a win, especially on the road." Princeton out-shot Cornell 51% to 38%, but Cornell hit 10 three pointers to Princeton's two and had five less turnovers than Princeton, which ultimately kept Cornell in the game until the end, despite the vast gap in shooting percentage between the two teams.

                              Princeton Key Players
                              M. Schroeder - 9 points, 2 rebounds, 6 assists, 3 steals
                              R. Rodriguez - 18 points, 7 rebounds
                              F. Djordic - 11 points, 10 rebounds

                              Cornell Key Players
                              L. Dale - 19 points, 4 rebounds, 6 assists
                              A. Gore - 16 points, 2 assists
                              B. Kreefer - 11 points, 7 rebounds, 2 steals

Princeton improves to 11-5 (1-0). Coach Frizzell's career record is now 29-16. Princeton's next game will be a rematch of this one as Princeton will host Cornell (8-6) a week from now on Saturday, January 24th.

                                Tigers Top Big Red

                                1/24/09 vs. Cornell

                                Final: 65-61

Despite a slow start, Coach Frizzell's Princeton Tigers would eventually show their talent as they edge out the Cornell Big Red 65-61 despite trailing by as much as 10 points in the first half. "We really showed some good tenacity out there. We didn't give up, even when we were down, and it gave us a chance to get back into the ball game. We seized that opportunity and walked away with the win because of it," explained Coach Frizzell. Renardo Rodriguez, after having a good last few games, had a less than stellar game as he only picked up 7 points on 3-12 shooting. Damien Allen (10 points, 9 rebounds) and Ferdinand Djordic (10 points, 12 rebounds) were the Princeton's leading scorers and really gave Princeton a consistent force down low. Lincoln Gunn came off the bench to tack on another 9 points and 3 rebounds as the Princeton Tigers win their fifth straight game.

Princeton is now 12-5 (2-0). Coach Frizzell's career mark stands at 30-16 as he picks up his 30th career win with the victory.

                                Final: 80-79

Princeto struggled against the last place team in the Ivy League all night as the Crimson defense gave the Tigers offense fits all night long. Princeton would come back after being down by eight points at the half. Lincoln Gunn (12 points) would come off the bench with the Tigers down by two and 4.5 seconds remaining to sink a last second three pointer that swished through the net keeping Princeton's win streak in tact which now stands at an impressive six games. "Gunn excecuted that last play perfectly. We ran him off the screen and he got open off the inbounds pass and he shot the ball perfectly to swish the basket giving us the win," explained Coach Frizzell about the game winning play. Four Tigers got into double figures in the game. Marcus Schroeder (11 points, 3 assists) provided steady guard play while Renardo Rodriguez struggled again, only getting 9 points off of 3-13 shooting. Martin Sow (14 points, 12 rebounds) picked up a double-double while Ferdinand Djordic (13 points, 4 rebounds) provided some additional scoring down low.

Princeton improves to 13-5 (3-0). Coach Frizzell's career record is now 31-16.

Princeton Tops Columbia By Shooting Lights Out

                                1/31/09 @ Columbia

                                Final: 67-64

In a highly anticipated Ivy League Conference Game, the excitement was rabbid as both teams were deadlocked at 32 at halftime. Princeton would take control in the second half, but would let Columbia get back into the game because of poor free throw shooting. Luckily, Columbia's final shot to tie the game up bricked off the rim, sealing Princeton's seventh straight victory. "We played really well tonight against one of the better teams in the Ivy League and I feel we are really starting to gel as a team now," explained Coach Frizzell. Renardo Rodriguez got back into the flow of things after two subpar performances in a row to get 13 points, 4 rebounds, and 3 assists. Damien Allen (11 points, 6 rebounds) and Martin Sow (14 points, 5 rebounds) provided some solid post offense while Lincoln Gunn came off the bench to score 10 points for the Tigers.

Princeton improves to 14-5 (4-0). Coach Frizzell's career record is now 32-16.

Princeton has been rewarded for it's good play as of late with #22 ranking in the latest mid-major top 25 poll. Princeton is now riding a seven game winning streak and sports a record of 14-5. "Hopefully this will help put us on the map a bit," commented Coach Frizzell. "We need to still play the same way we were playing, though, because it's easy to get over-confident in these types of situations which can lead to you blowing some ball games you should win."

                                Press Conference

Today in his press conference Coach Frizzell talked about how he feels his team is playing now. "We are playing great. We have looked a little shaky at times in our seven game winning streak, but the fact remains that we have won seven games in a row, so even if we have not really blown anyone out really bad, we have still found ways to win. I am impressed with the way we are playing now. All of our starters are averaging over 7.4 points per game. We have been excecuting well on offense and defense lately and have just really been gelling together."

Coach Frizzell, rather caught off guard, was also asked about if he was plannng on moving on to greener pastures next year if he gets the opportunity. He replied by saying, "I really don't think we are in a position to talk about that sort of stuff right now. We are in the middle of a college basketball season and I don't think we should be worried about that sort of stuff right now."
