    WVU Coliseum

    December 3rd, 2019

The West Virginia Mountaineers (8-0) remained undefeated as they steamrolled over an inferior Army Black Knights (4-3) team by 47 points. West Virginia led 56-29 at halftime after hitting 14 of 24 three-point attempts in the first half. The Mountaineers cooled off in the second half, but still ended the game hitting 17 of 34 threes.

The Mountaineers were led by Dinky Wood. Wood, who shot only 1-for-7 from downtown against Dartmouth, made seven of his first eight three-point attempts as he scored a career-high 23 points. He missed his last three three-point attempts, but he still shot 8-for-11 from three for the game.

Justino Whitworth scored 15 off the bench while Josh Bigby chipped in 11 points. Raynardo Admundson also had a nice game as he totaled 11 points, 3 rebounds, 6 assists, and 3 steals.

The Mountaineers now have three days off before taking on the Michigan Wolverines in Ann Arbor.

West Virginia (8-1) vs. Michigan (5-2)
        Crisler Arena

        December 7th, 2019

Tora! Tora! Tora! The West Virginia Mountaineers (8-1) suffered their first loss of the season on Pearl Harbor Day as the Michigan Wolverines ran the Mountaineers out of the building for much of the game on their way to a 92-77 victory.

The West Virginia defense, which had held its first eight opponents this season under 65 points, crumbled tonight against a Michigan team that seemingly couldn't miss. The Wolverines shot 61% from the floor on their way to scoring a season-high 92 points.

The Wolverines built up an enormous lead early on and led 52-27 at halftime. The Wolverines continued to build on their lead early in the second half, leading by 36 points at one point. Coach Beilein elected to pull his starters at that point, which allowed WVU to go on a long, sustained run that forced the Michigan starters back in with five minutes remaining and the Mountaineers facing only a 10-point deficit.

Michigan's starters would tighten up on defense and hit some shots to build the lead back to 15 points, however, as the Michigan starters would prove too much for the Mountaineers to handle. Michigan went on to win by 15 points.

The Mountaineers dominated the offensive glass, as they collected 14 offensive rebounds against the Wolverines, which was a big reason why they were able to make such a large comeback.

"Quite frankly, we played awful," said Coach Frizzell. "We thought this would be a good chance to prove ourselves against one of the better teams in college basketball, but we crapped the bed tonight.

"The only positive I can take from this game is that we never gave up. Even when we were down by 36, we kept on fighting and it actually gave us a slim shot at a victory in the closing minutes."

The Mountaineers' next game is against Coach Frizzell's old team, the San Francisco Dons. The Dons will host the Mountaineers.

          Unfortunately, not anymore.

Michigan was just lights-out. I don't know anyway I could have beaten them after the way they played, especially in the first half.

Still tied for 2nd in the Big East. I feel like it doesn't matter where you end in the Big East, as long as you can make a run in the tournament. They are always stacked with talented teams.

Also, I don't know how you didn't immediately rename that kid named Dinky haha.

You waited and waited then finally got THE job you wanted. The jump to the power conferences was long overdue.

You are 8-1, the same as Villanova and better than Pitt, but you are not in the top 25. If WVU can continue to play inspired b-ball, it shouldn't take long, especially with you at the helm. Good luck to you at WVU and in the Big East.
If you can read this, thank a teacher. If you can read this in english, thank a soldier.

                    Thanks, Mr. Knight.

We're playing better basketball than I expected. The defense has been surprisingly good, as well, except for the Michigan game.

                      War Memorial Gymnasium
                      San Francisco, CA
                      December 21st, 2019

After a fortnight off, the West Virginia Mountaineers (9-1) hit the floor against Coach Frizzell's old team, the San Francisco Dons (12-2), who were ranked the #5 team in the nation coming into the game. However, that would all change tonight. Coach Frizzell's Mountaineers would put on a defensive masterpiece as they defeated the top-five Dons 62-56.

The Mountaineers held everyone on the USF roster to under 10 points except for senior point guard Matt Owen, who was on fire, hitting 7 of 11 threes for 25 points. Other than that, no Dons player scored over nine points. The Dons held Owen Kole to 9 points, 9 rebounds, and a pair of blocks and held him to only 3-for-11 shooting.

Marquel Proffitt played magnificent defense on the First Team All-American center for San Francisco. Proffitt also wasn't too shabby in other facets of the game as he totaled a double-double with 10 points and 12 rebounds.

The Mountaineers held the Dons to 36% shooting, although USF did hit 11 of 22 three-point attempts. The Mountaineers didn't shoot so great themselves at 38%, but it was enough to win this defensive slugfest.

It should be noted that San Francisco's starting power forward, Bernard Mendoza, missed the game with an injury.

It is probable that Coach Frizzell was able to formulate such a gameplan against his old team because he used to coach the Dons last year. "Sure, it helped that I coached these guys last year," he responded. "It certainly played to our advantage that I knew what to do to stop our opponents."

The Mountaineers have four days off now before taking on the #4 Duke Blue Devils (7-1). The week after features games against #14 Duquesne (12-1) and #10 Villanova (8-2). The week of January 6th then pits the Mountaineers against Syracuse (9-2) and Rutgers (5-5), when the Mountaineers will finally get a break from the grinder of playing five teams that are currently ranked in the top 25 in a row.

Yeah, it did some. It also felt weird with the CPU controlling the guys I'm used to controlling.

I was surprised how well Proffitt and company did on Kole. I threw some double-teams on him, as well, which seemed to help. Proffitt has been a blessing this entire year. It's huge to have a seven-footer down low that rebounds the basketball well, defends, and score decently.

The West Virginia Mountaineers (9-2) were hoping to get a belated Christmas present in the form of a victory over #4 Duke (9-1) on the day after Christmas, but instead they got a whooping delivered courtesy of the Blue Devils. Duke used a 26-6 run towards the end of the first half and in the first portion of the second half to build an insurmountable 22-point lead over the Mountaineers on their way to their ninth win of the season.

West Virginia would cut the lead to as few as eight points at one point in the second half, but Duke was in full control as they turned it on and stifled the WVU run. In the end, the Mountaineers would fall 89-72 to a hot-shooting Duke team that showed why it's ranked #4 in the nation.

The Blue Devils were led by junior shooting guard Keena Garrity, who scored 24 points on only 10 shot attempts, scoring 2.4 points per shot. Garrity shot 9-for-10 from the field, 4-4 from three-point range, and 2-2 from the free throw line.

The Mountaineers will have no chance to catch their breath against a weaker opponent following this brutal loss as their next three games match them up with #13 Duquesne (12-1), #24 Villanova (8-2), and Syracuse (9-2).
