Ouch. Must have seemed like they made every shot... 55% from the floor and 95% from the stripe. You should be able to bounce back against Rutgers. Good luck.

Yeah, it was a tough game. It was kind of disappointing to lose to a team rated four points lower than we are (SU is an 83 OVR compared to my 87 OVR), but such is life.

        vs.
West Virginia (11-4) vs. Rutgers (6-9)
        Louis Brown Athletic Center
        Piscataway, NJ
        January 11th, 2020

The West Virginia Mountaineers (11-4, 2-1) got a scare tonight against a Rutgers (6-9, 1-2) team that had surprisingly started out 1-1 in Big East Conference play after a poor non-conference showing.

The Mountaineers led the Scarlet Knights 33-22, but Rutgers would make a run in the second half to take a 51-50 lead midway through the second half. Fortunately for the Mountaineers, they would make a run late to put the game safely away.

This game was ultimately decided at the free throw line, where WVU had an 18-point advantage. The Mountaineers shot 18-for-20 from the line while Rutgers managed a pathetic 0-for-5 performance. The Mountaineers are shooting 79.6% from the line this season (second-best in the NCAA behind Arizona), and it paid off for them today, as West Virginia shot 90% from the charity stripe.

An interesting lineup change was made today as Justino Whitworth was inserted into the starting lineup in place of small forward Allan Pena, giving the Mountaineers a three-guard starting unit. Whitworth came into the game shooting 47% from the field and 45% from three-point range and Coach Frizzell felt like he needed to get the sharpshooter more minutes. Whitworth only managed 1-for-6 from downtown this afternoon, but he still managed 11 points on 5-for-12 shooting in a decent performance.

"We'll see how it goes," explained Coach Frizzell. "It's nothing against Pena; he's a good player, we just need Justino to get more minutes. He's been great off the bench this year, but I'd like to get him 20-to-25 minutes per game as opposed to 10-to-15 minutes.

The Mountaineers have four days off before taking on Notre Dame (11-6, 2-2) and Cincinnati (13-3, 2-0) next week.

            January 16th, 2020

It was a bit of a struggle, but the West Virginia Mountaineers (12-4, 3-1) managed to seize their 12th win of the year this evening as the Mountaineers defeated the Notre Dame Fighting Irish (11-7, 2-3) 76-64.

The Mountaineers led by two points at halftime and only led by a few points until the closing minutes of the game, but a late run allowed the Mountaineers to run away with a 12-point victory. Notre Dame led most of the first half before a Justino Whitworth three-pointer at the buzzer gave the Mountaineers a two-point lead at the break.

The Mountaineers were led by strong performances from Marqus Coulter, Marquel Proffitt, and Justino Whitworth, who is proving his worth as a starter. Coulter scored a career-high 23 points to go along with 8 rebounds and 3 steals. Proffitt tallied a double-double as he totaled 18 points and 10 rebounds. Whitworth shot 7-for-10 from the floor on his way to a career-high 17 points and 4 steals.

The Mountaineers will host the Cincinnati Bearcats (13-5, 2-2) on Saturday. The Bearcats have dropped their last two decisions, coming against #16 Connecticut and Syracuse.

It's always tough to play one of the BCS (power) conference schools on their home court, even Rutgers gave you a little scare at their place.

                LOL.

Yeah, some of these road games have been tough. Also, every team in the Big East is rated 80 or above, so there are no pushovers in the conference. Even DePaul is rated an 80, so they won't just lay down for you. Heck, Providence, who has a bad record this year, has an 84 rating.

My team has an 87 rating, which puts us in the top half of the league.

The West Virginia Mountaineers (13-4, 4-1) won their third game in a row in impressive fashion this Saturday afternoon as they steamrolled over the Cincinnati Bearcats (13-6, 2-3) 94-72, giving the Bearcats their third straight loss after a 13-3 start to the season.

The Mountaineers rolled from the start and never really let this one get close. WVU led by 15 points at halftime. Cincinnati cut the lead to 10 points at one point in the second half, but it was short-lived as the Mountaineers went on to win in convincing fashion.

The Mountaineers were led by Raynardo Admundson, who emerged to a career-night after one of the worst games of his career against Notre Dame a couple days ago. This afternoon Admundson scored 24 points and dished out 8 assists, both career-highs for the sophomore. He also grabbed 3 boards. Justino Whitworth, Marquel Proffitt, and Josh Bigby also scored in double-figures, scoring 15, 13, and 12 points respectively.

West Virginia was very hot offensively as the Mountaineers shot 53% from the field and 64% from three-point range.

West Virginia travels to #15 Pittsburgh (14-3, 4-1) next Thursday as they will take on their hated rivals on the road. The Mountaineers will follow that up with the Capitol Classic against the Marshall Thundering Herd (8-5) on Friday, which will serve as WVU's final regular season non-conference game of the season.

congrats on the wins. it's nice to see san fran still doing well after you left them, you know you did something right there when their still in the top 10. Also I think Huggins recruited people by how weird their names are before he retired? Justino, Dinky, Marqus, Marquel, and Piotr are some of the weirdest names i have seen yet and they are all on your squad!

Glad to see you finally made the switch to Whitworth, James, I really had a feeling you would do that. I honestly thought it would be for Dinky instead of Pena, but Dinky has played well in the three guard lineup.

USF has a really good squad this year (91 OVR rating).

LOL, I guess Huggins got senile in his old age and lost his mind, just recruiting players based on their names.

Yeah, Whitworth has been good so far. Woods is the best-rated three-point shooter we have (though Whitworth's rating combined with my comfortableness with his shooting motion makes him better) and is the best free throw shooter I've ever had (92 FT rating). Also, he's top-rated player on the team, so I just couldn't justify benching him as he's played pretty decently this year.

Allan Pena has some talent and should be good in the future, but he's not as good of a shooter as I'd like at the small forward position at this point, though I'm sure he'll get better. He's great to have off the bench, though.

                            January 23rd, 2020

The #21 West Virginia Mountaineers (13-5, 4-2) had their three-game winning streak snapped tonight as they lost to their rivals, the #12 Pittsburgh Panthers (15-3, 5-1), on the road by a score of 56-49.

This was an ugly offensive game in which neither side could gain much of an edge. Both teams slugged it out for the majority of the ball game. West Virginia led Pittsburgh 19-18 at halftime, which gives you a good idea at how sloppy both offenses were, and how well both teams' defenses were performing. In the end, Pittsburgh gained a small edge late in the game and hit their free throws to win by seven points.

West Virginia shot 28% from the floor and 24% from three-point range. In addition, the Mountaineers, who came into the game making over 80% of their free throws, only hit 12 of 18 (67%) from the line tonight.

Marqel Proffit, who is normally dependable, shot 2-for-11. Raynardo Admundson shot 1-for-7. Justino Whitworth shot 4-for-12.

"We just couldn't hit shots tonight," explained Coach Frizzell. "Our execution wasn't necessarily flawed; we just couldn't shoot. Hopefully, we get that ironed out for the Capitol Classic against Marshall tomorrow."

The Mountaineers face the Marshall Thundering Herd (10-5) at the Charleston Civic Center tomorrow. WVU will return to Big East play on Sunday afternoon against the Providence Friars (6-14, 1-6) before facing the gauntlet against #14 Connecticut (16-3, 5-2), #22 St. John's (15-4, 4-2), and Georgetown (12-4, 4-1).

The Capitol Classic always seems to be closer than it should be and tonight was no different. The West Virginia Mountaineers (14-5) struggled throughout the game with a pesky Marshall (10-6) team that wouldn't give up. The Mountaineers held a three-point lead with 30 seconds left before Marshall started fouling, which resulted in a 79-71 victory.

The Mountaineers' savior tonight was Dinky Woods, who hit five threes on his way to 21 points. Marqus Coulter also had a great game, ending with 10 points and 8 rebounds.

After a great defensive performance against Pittsburgh yesterday, the Mountaineers were not nearly as impressive defensively today, as Marshall shot 48% from the field and outrebounded WVU 37-to-30. However, the Thundering Herd were careless with the basketball, resulting in 19 turnovers, which ultimately nailed shot the coffin for the Herd.

The Mountaineers have tomorrow off before taking on the Providence Friars (6-14, 1-6) on Sunday.

The West Virginia Mountaineers (14-6, 4-3) surprisingly dropped their third Big East game of the season at home tonight against the Providence Frairs (7-14, 2-6). The Mountaineers trailed 36-22 at halftime, but made a comeback in the second half to almost win the game.

Justino Whitworth got a wide open three-pointer which would have won the game at the buzzer, but his shot clanked off the iron and Providence pulled off the stunning upset by a score of 68-67. Whitworth was a shockingly bad 0-for-7 from beyond the arc tonight. Overall, the Mountaineers were only 3-for-15 from downtown.

The only WVU player that truly had a nice game was Marquel Proffitt, who did everything in his power to win the game for the Mountaineers. Unfortunately, his 24-point, 13-rebound performance was not enough.

Things don't get any easier from here on out as the Mountaineers will take on #14 Connecticut (17-3, 6-2), #22 St. John's (16-4, 5-2), and Georgetown (13-4, 5-1) in their next three ball games. West Virginia better get their act together or they could be staring down a four-game losing streak which would be devastating to their NCAA Tournament hopes.
