Charleston Southern (1-2) vs. West Virginia (3-1)

    November 20th, 2023

The West Virginia Mountaineers (3-1) easily defeated the Charleston Southern Buccaneers (1-2) 82-60 this afternoon in the Third Place Game of the Paradise Jam Classic.

Osei Forney led the Mountaineers with a season-high 22 points, seven rebounds, and five assists. Arden Mann notched his first career double-double with 12 points and a career-high 11 boards. Daryan Fizwater had a solid outing, tallying 10 points, seven rebounds, and three assists. Barry George hit a pair of threes en route to 12 points and three assists while Randall Norton added 11 points.

Charleston Southern was led by a fantastic individual effort by 6'8" freshman center Nathan Cantrell. Cantrell hit nine of his 10 shot attempts and tallied 20 points and four rebounds in only his third career game. More impressively, he did so against Osei Forney, who, at 7'1", is known to be one of the better defenders in all of college basketball.

In addition, Rome Danley scored 12 points and grabbed three boards while Danny Eblong came from off the bench to add 10 points and four rebounds.

In other news, Texas A&M defeated Miami 70-63 in the Paradise Jam Classic Championship Game as the Aggies keep their undefeated season alive, improving their record to 4-0.

West Virginia will travel tomorrow as they will face off against Arkansas-Pine Bluff on Wednesday in the Quarterfinals Round of the Great Alaska Shootout in Anchorage, AK.

Great job on the recruiting class (OVR 77, 76, 76, 74)!

I sort of wish I could play 20-min halves, but it just doesn't work for me. I like to run n' gun as much as possible & the shot totals get ridiculous.

I like 500bloc's sliders, but for some reason the 70/20 game/player speed thing bugs me every time I come back to the game after not playing for a few days. Feel like the ball's whipping around the court like a hockey puck at times, but I guess its just me...

Yea I changed the speeds on all my sliders to 60/47. That's just me though.

Solid game against Charleston. It's always good when your whole starting 5 gets in double digits, no matter the opponent.

Yeah, I certainly understand the reason for increasing the game speed & reducing player speed. It opens up the court spacing a little. I eventually settled on 57/40.

The game speed sliders may be a work in progress. I do think 70/20 opens up the spacing on the floor a lot more, which is why I kind of like it, but it is open for editing as time goes on.

From the looks of things, you should not have much of a problem getting past Arkansas State to get to the tournament final. The Mountaineers shouldn't be waiting too long until they are back in the top 25.

Yeah, Arkansas State was a victory, though I probably have awhile before I get back into the top 25 (if I do). I should be favored in all my games up until the Clemson game, though.

Osei Forney racked up his fourth double-double this season as he tallied a season-high 25 points, 11 rebounds, and three assists to lead the West Virginia Mountaineers (5-1) to their fifth victory over the season this evening against Arkansas State (3-1) in the Semifinals Round of the Great Alaska Shootout.

The Arkansas State Red Wolves played well and only trailed WVU by a single point at halftime after leading throughout much of the first half. However, WVU's superior talent began to take hold as the game rolled on, eventually culminating in the end result: an 88-79 West Virginia victory.

In addition to Forney's aforementioned performance, Barry George also filled up the stat sheet with 13 points, three rebounds, seven assists, and four steals. Jud Helms was the only other double-digit scorer for the Mountaineers as he tallied a career-high 10 points.

LaForest Augustin also notched a career-high, scoring 16 points to go along with four rebounds and four assists for the Red Wolves. Hugh Stapleton added 14 points, seven rebounds, and a pair of blocks while Gavin Vaitiekus scored 11 points and dished out four assists from off the bench. TaQuan Riley also added 14 points and four rebounds.

West Virginia will face off against the undefeated Minnesota Golden Gophers in the Great Alaska Shootout Championship Game tomorrow evening.

Usually, a 23-point deficit in the second half is just too much for a team to overcome.

But don't tell that to the West Virginia Mountaineers! WVU overcame a 23-point second half deficit this evening to defeat the Minnesota Golden Gophers 79-68.

The Mountaineers found themselves in a 23-point hole early in the second half following a huge Minnesota run which saw them extend a 10-point halftime lead into a game that seemed headed towards a blowout.

Then the Mountaineers came to life, fueled by Osei Forney, who racked up yet another double-double, this time ending with 22 points, 10 rebounds, and three blocks. Forney, along with solid performances by Norton, George, and Grizzard, willed the Mountaineers to victory with a 46-point offensive explosion in the second half.

Meanwhile, on the defensive end, the Mountaineers slowly sucked the air out of Minnesota's run and ground the Golden Gophers' offensive into the ground. Even counting the early Minnesota run, the Golden Gophers would only record 25 points in the second half, this coming after a 43-point effort in the first half.

"We really stepped up there after that initial beating in the second half and took it to them," beamed Coach Frizzell. "Tonight, we showed a lot of mental toughness and certainly showed that we are not quitters. A lot of teams would have given up in similar situations, so I am proud of this team for not giving up and clawing their way back into the game to bring home the trophy."

With a Great Alaska Shootout Championship in the books, West Virginia will host James Madison on November 28th.

What a comeback for WVU? How does this team feel compared to last season?

At this point, I'd say last year's team was better, though not by much (our OVR rating is an 88, by the way). We'll see going forward, though.

That's what I get from copying last year's edition of the post-season recap and simply updating it for this year. I forget stuff and end up with stupidity like that!

At least I got the record right.

I have changed it to Georgia Tech now, though.
