Hopefully a good showing in the Big East tournament helps sort things out a bit. Sometimes that's what it takes. But I'm curious to see what your tourney profile looks like.

We are projected as a #9 seed at the moment. We have a tough stretch of games upcoming, but barring a complete collapse, I expect us to make the NCAA Tournament, regardless. We probably won't be as high of a seed as the fans have become accustomed to, though!

That earlier home non-conference loss to Manhattan hurts me a lot, though. They are absolutely terrible and have a sub-200 RPI at the moment. I was coming into that one after the blowout loss at Duke and just seemingly rolled over and gave up against the Jaspers.

        vs.
        West Virginia (19-9) vs. #19 Marquette (22-7)
        Bradley Center
        Milwaukee, WI
        February 22nd, 2023

In a matchup of two teams that have been on a slide as of late, things went down to the wire as both No. 19 Marquette (22-7, 10-6 Big East) and West Virginia (19-9, 8-7 Big East) went into overtime with the score tied at 60 apiece. In the overtime period, the Golden Eagles jumped out on top and never looked back, sinking their free throws and claiming a 76-69 victory over the Mountaineers in Milwaukee.

Once again, the Mountaineers were plagued by the proverbial turnover bug. Tonight, the Mountaineers turned the ball over 19 times while only managing 16 assists.

"It's hard to win games when you turn the ball over so many times," explained Coach Frizzell. "We turned the ball over 24 times against Seton Hall and 19 tonight. And, surprise, surprise, we lost both games. If we don't get this corrected, we're going nowhere in the postseason."

Esteban Bree scored 14 points and four rebounds for Marquette. Arvydas Jack added 11 points and three assists while freshman center Sid Hinrich totaled 10 points and six boards. Darrel Deng added 12 points, six rebounds, and four assists from off the bench.

Barry George had a career night for the Mountaineers, scoring a career-high 23 points to go along with four assists and four steals. Unfortunately, his efforts did not prove to be enough to offset his team's poor play. Osei Forney managed 17 points and seven rebounds, but only shot six of 16 from the field and five of nine from the free throw line.

West Virginia will face another tough test on Saturday at noon as the Mountaineers will host #7 Villanova. The Wildcats have won 13 games in a row since suffering a five-game losing streak in late December and early January. Villanova's last loss came on the road at #25 Syracuse on January 7th.

Dang that's a tough loss. It always hurts to have such sloppy play with all the turnovers and the fouls. Hope you guys can clean all that up when Villanova comes to town.

The turnover bug is killing West Virginia. And with the streaking Villanova up next, they did to cure themselves and fast. Hope they can get it done.

Turnovers have been a huge problem. I've been lackadaisical with the ball lately!!!

Villanova will be tough. They are on a roll, but it's at home so you never know!

13 victories in a row went down the drain for No. 7 Villanova (22-7, 12-4 Big East) this afternoon as the West Virginia Mountaineers (20-9, 9-7 Big East) upset the Wildcats 78-62.

The Mountaineers used strong frontcourt play and good shooting to take charge in this one. The Mountaineers shot 54% from the field during the game. Osei Forney scored a game-high 22 points and grabbed seven boards. Allan Pena totaled 20 points, three rebounds, three assists, and three blocks while Damian French added 12 points, five rebounds, and three blocks.

George Hartman led Villanova with 16 points and four three-pointers made. Lanny Lidzus and Walter Chatfield scored 15 points apiece with the former grabbing nine rebounds and the latter ending with six boards.

"This is a huge win for us," beamed Coach Frizzell after his team's upset of the No. 7 team in the land. "We'd lost three of our last four games coming into this one and there was no question that we really needed a victory. To win against a top team like Villanova just makes it that much more special. Hopefully, we can use this win to propel us into the postseason with some confidence."

West Virginia will close out the regular season next week at Louisville and at home against Rutgers.

                    Louisville, KY
                    March 1st, 2023

The West Virginia Mountaineers (21-9, 10-7 Big East) won their second game in a row this evening as the Mountaineers marched into the Yum! Center and controlled the game against the hosting Louisville Cardinals (20-8, 12-5 Big East). The Mountaineers never trailed in this affair, though Louisville also managed to keep the game within striking distance right until the final buzzer. In the end, the Mountaineers would wind up defeating the Cardinals 70-64, spoiling the Cardinals' Senior Night.

Osei Forney scored 19 points and grabbed nine boards for the Mountaineers, falling just one rebound shy of a double-double. Meanwhile, Damian French had another fine game, scoring 14 points and grabbing four rebounds. French has now scored 26 points in the last two games and is nine-for-nine from the field and two-for-two from three-point range during that span.

"Damian [French] has really stepped up his play in the last two games," explained Coach Frizzell. "For the most part, he's out there for his defense and his rebounding abilities. We know he has a nice mid-range game and he can shoot the three when he's open, but we don't expect a whole lot of offense out of him. However, in these last two games, he's really opened up his game and has managed to score points without getting a lot of shots. He's still not, and never will be, a legitimate back-to-the-basket player, but if he can score some points, it can help to take some pressure of off Osei [Forney] and others in our offense and will also help to space the floor more."

Brendon Cesar led the Cardinals with 14 points and eight rebounds. Senior forward Eric Patton also added 14 points and five boards.

West Virginia will host Rutgers in Saturday in what will be WVU's last regular season game. In addition, the game will be Senior Night as seniors Zachary Wooten, Allan Pena, Damian French, and Jorge Henderson will be honored.

Nice bounce back wins against some good teams. Maybe I missed it after looking through your conference schedule, but did you only play Pitt once? That sucks (even though they are good) since they are such a big rival.

That's one thing that annoys me about this game; it doesn't schedule rivals like it should. I know UNC's schedule only has Duke on it once in some seasons.

Yeah, this game doesn't schedule Pitt twice like real life where Pitt and WVU play each other every season. It sucks, but it is what it is and legacy mode is still great, regardless.

Of course, I still will play Pitt twice every now and then due to the regular rotations of the conference schedule, but it won't be often.

                          March 4th, 2023

The West Virginia Mountaineers (22-9, 11-7 Big East) defeated the Rutgers Scarlet Knights (16-14, 6-12 Big East) this evening on Senior Night 72-61 to avenge their 61-60 loss at Rutgers earlier this season in Piscataway.

Tonight, the Mountaineers hosted the Scarlet Knights in Morgantown. Rutgers jumped out early and lead by a point at halftime, but the Mountaineers took charge in the second half, eventually extending their lead to as many as 18 points en route to the aforementioned 18-point victory.

The most glaring statistic of the night was rebounding. WVU totaled 39 rebounds this evening while the Scarlet Knights only managed 19. Osei Forney had a lot to do with that as the junior center brought down 17 huge rebounds this evening. Forney also scored a team-high 16 points.

Damian French continued his hot play as he tallied 12 points and six rebounds. This is French's third game in a row in which he has scored 12 points or higher, which is impressive for a guy that is only averaging around 5.8 points per game on the season. Allan Pena added 12 points and four rebounds while Kelyn Clemmons came off the bench to hit three treys and record 11 points.

Rutgers was led by Varney Luz, who scored a team-high 16 points.

With the regular season completed, the Mountaineers will await the results of tonight's other games to see what seed they will receive in the 2023 Big East Tournament.
