Connecticut (16-7) vs. #23 West Virginia (18-6)
WVU Coliseum
Morgantown, WV
February 4th, 2022
No. 23 West Virginia (18-6, 7-4 Big East) won its third consecutive game this evening as the Mountaineers outlasted the Connecticut Huskies (16-7, 6-5 Big East) 68-56.
The Mountaineers led for the vast majority of the game, but really extended their lead early in the second half after an initial UConn run right after halftime. During that period, the Mountaineers extended their lead to 16 points and, from that point on, the Huskies would never really threaten as WVU would cruise to the 12-point victory to earn their 18th win of the season.
Allan Pena led the Mountaineers with 14 points and three rebounds. He stepped up when Osei Forney got into foul trouble. Forney would eventually foul out in the closing minutes after only amassing six points and eight rebounds in 15 minutes of action.
Nathan Power led UConn with 14 points, five rebounds, and three assists while Lelan Sims added 10 points, four boards, and three assists.
West Virginia will take to the road again next Wednesday to take on the St. John's Red Storm. Earlier this year in Morgantown the Mountaineers blew out the Red Storm 93-57, but St. John's is now on a three-game winning streak, so it won't be an easy win for the Mountaineers. Then again, no road game in the Big East is an easy win, aside from DePaul, perhaps.
