    Connecticut (16-7) vs. #23 West Virginia (18-6)
    WVU Coliseum
    Morgantown, WV
    February 4th, 2022

No. 23 West Virginia (18-6, 7-4 Big East) won its third consecutive game this evening as the Mountaineers outlasted the Connecticut Huskies (16-7, 6-5 Big East) 68-56.

The Mountaineers led for the vast majority of the game, but really extended their lead early in the second half after an initial UConn run right after halftime. During that period, the Mountaineers extended their lead to 16 points and, from that point on, the Huskies would never really threaten as WVU would cruise to the 12-point victory to earn their 18th win of the season.

Allan Pena led the Mountaineers with 14 points and three rebounds. He stepped up when Osei Forney got into foul trouble. Forney would eventually foul out in the closing minutes after only amassing six points and eight rebounds in 15 minutes of action.

Nathan Power led UConn with 14 points, five rebounds, and three assists while Lelan Sims added 10 points, four boards, and three assists.

West Virginia will take to the road again next Wednesday to take on the St. John's Red Storm. Earlier this year in Morgantown the Mountaineers blew out the Red Storm 93-57, but St. John's is now on a three-game winning streak, so it won't be an easy win for the Mountaineers. Then again, no road game in the Big East is an easy win, aside from DePaul, perhaps.

Vernon Blanchard scored 31 points and grabbed seven rebounds as the St. John's Red Storm (17-8, 7-5 Big East) won their fourth game in a row this evening over No. 17 West Virginia (18-7, 7-5 Big East) 97-78.

The Red Storm ran all over the WVU defense, leading 40-34 at halftime and blowing the lid open in the second half en route to 57 points in the final period. St. John's shot 53% from the field and hit 11 of 23 shots from long distance. The Red Storm also shot 20-for-24 from the free throw line.

Senior guard Albert Luz neared a double-double for the Red Storm with 18 points and nine assists. Clement Mulligan tallied 13 points and eight boards while Vinnie Allison and Louie Troester added 10 points and six rebounds each.

The Mountaineers were led by sophomore guard Barry George, who scored a team-high 18 points and dished out three assists. Osei Forney also added 16 points and six rebounds.

West Virginia will look to bounce back from this loss on Saturday as the Mountaineers will host the struggling Seton Hall Pirates.

Man...the Big East just gets better and better every year doesn't it? How many teams are we thinking they'll get into the dance this year? Ridiculous haha.

But tough loss to St. Johns, nice little win streak prior to that though. You beat some tough competition and those gritty in-conference games always help the boys get ready for tournament time.

If I had to guess, the Big East will get 8-10 in the NCAA Tournament this year. The top of the conference is really good, but the bottom dwellers leave some to be desired.

St. John's was a disappointing loss considering I had handled them earlier this season, but it was a road game and those don't always go as planned!!!

24 turnovers and a mediocre shooting night doomed the Mountaineers as No. 17 West Virginia (18-8, 7-6 Big East) lost its second consecutive game this evening as the Seton Hall Pirates (13-11, 5-7 Big East) came into Morgantown and showed up the Mountaineers.

Seton Hall led throughout the majority of the game. The Pirates led by five as both teams went to the locker room at halftime and only extended their lead in the second half. A late WVU run cut the Seton Hall lead back into the single digits, but the Pirates hit their free throws and emerged with the 73-63 victory to pick up their 13th victory of the season.

Damir Malone scored a game-high 18 points to go along with three rebounds and three steals with the Pirates. Stefan Nelke added 14 points, five rebounds, and five steals while Courtnei Jurczak came off the bench to accumulate 13 points, three rebounds, and three assists. In total, the Pirates tallied 20 steals, which helped to offset the 39-28 rebounding advantage WVU possessed.

Osei Forney led the Mountaineers with 12 points, seven rebounds, and four assists. However, he only shot three-for-11 from the field. Allan Pena was the only other Mountaineer to eclipse 10 points as he ended with 12 points and four rebounds.

West Virginia will look to bounce back next week as they will host DePaul, who is only 5-20 this season.

Wow that's a little harsh to see West Virgina completely knocked out of the Top 25. Hopefully things turn around with DePaul and Seton Hall was just a blip on the radar screen.

WVU gave that game away. 24 turnovers & the Pirates stole the ball 20 times is not playing the game "the right way" as ball control is a must. The Mountaineers need a good comeback week to get back on the right track.

It's my typical inconsistent play. One day we knock off a top 25 team, the next we turn the ball over a million times and lose to a mediocre/terrible team (like Manhattan).

Indeed. 'Twas a frustrating game. Thankfully, DePaul is next, and I could beat them with both hands and one eye tied behind my back.

Playing DePaul (5-21, 2-12 Big East) is always a good recipe for breaking a losing streak. It was certainly true today as the West Virginia Mountaineers (19-8, 8-6 Big East) ended their two-game losing streak with an 82-48 romping over the Blue Demons this evening in Morgantown.

WVU took a 10-0 lead right off the bat and never looked back. The rout allowed Coach Frizzell to empty his team's bench and give his younger players some much-needed playing time.

Osei Forney led the Mountaineers with 16 points and seven rebounds. Barry George added 13 points and seven assists while Allan Pena scored 11 points. Zachary Wooten also scored 10 points.

DePaul was led by Luol Queen, who scored 14 points to go along with four assists.

West Virginia will face a tough test next week as the Mountaineers will travel to Milwaukee, WI to take on #18 Marquette.

It's pretty weird to see a Frizzell coached team on the bubble this late in the season. Usually you guys have a spot reserved in the tourney, this year if you get a few more bad losses you might not even make it in.
