Tough loss, are you surprised West Virginia seems to have taken so many L's this season? I know they aren't the same team as last year, but can't say anyone expected South Florida to be competition.

Free throw margin was killer in the Louisville game though, I hate when that happens. I'll look at the stats and everything will be almost even until I notice the CPU took 15 more FTs than me.

Yes, it is a nice play tucked in the Monongahela River valley. I've been to Morgantown quite a few times, but I have never lived there (I did used to live in another part of WV west of Charleston, though).

Yes, I am surprised we have struggled this much. We'll see where it goes from here, but I definitely didn't expect to sustain six losses this early in the season. The South Florida game was just sad. They aren't even a good team at all...

        vs.
#9 West Virginia (17-6) vs. South Florida (11-12)
        USF Sun Dome
        Tampa, FL
        January 30th, 2027

It looked like South Florida (11-12, 2-7) was going to beat No. 9 West Virginia (17-6, 6-4) again. The Bulls handed the Mountaineers their second conference loss earlier this season with a 77-65 decision in favor of USF in Morgantown and appeared to be well on their way to doing the same at the USF Sun Dome in Tampa this evening. The Bulls led the Mountaineers 32-24 at halftime.

The second half was a different story, however, as the WVU offense finally came alive. D.C. Montgomery and Tre Welch exploded as the Mountaineers outscored the Bulls 47-30 in the second half to emerge victorious, 71-62.

Montgomery was splendid as he scored 25 points and grabbed five rebounds to lead the Mountaineers. He shot five-for-eight from three-point range. Welch was also impressive as he tallied 20 points, eight rebounds, and three steals. Jud Helms also just missed out on a double-double with 12 points, nine rebounds, and four assists as WVU's frontcourt was very impressive.

Clayton Woolley led USF with 14 points and four rebounds. Tommy Gakou added 13 points, five rebounds, and three assists while Rome Sandoval came off the bench to score 12 points.

West Virginia will face a dangerous Villanova squad at home next Wednesday. The Wildcats got off to a terrible start this season, but are on a six-game winning streak (none against top 25 teams, however) and are 6-3 in Big East Conference play.

No. 11 West Virginia (18-6, 7-4) stopped a hot Villanova (12-11, 7-4) squad square in its tracks. The Wildcats came in having won six games in a row after a very rough start in non-conference play, but West Virginia easily defeated them 86-67 this afternoon.

The Mountaineers did not have any one player stand out, but the blowout win allowed WVU's Coach Frizzell to get most of his players meaningful playing time during the second half. Tre Welch led the Mountaineers in scoring and rebounding as he tallied 12 points, 12 rebounds, and four assists. Waitari Trammell used his increased playing time to shine as he totaled 11 points, three rebounds, and three assists while Jud Helms just missed out on a double-double with 10 points, nine rebounds, and three assists. Leandro Summers added 10 points.

Rhett Petkunas led the Wildcats with a game-high, and indeed a career-high, 23 points and six rebounds. Senior Ko Latovic contributed 10 points and seven boards while Buster Berry paced the offense with 10 points and three assists.

The Mountaineers will host No. 25 Seton Hall next.

No. 11 West Virginia (19-6, 8-4) stopped Seton Hall (17-7, 7-4) in its tracks. The No. 25 Pirates, who checked in in the AP Top 25 for the first time this season last week, came in looking to make a statement win, but came away utterly shattered as the Mountaineers absolutely clobbered the Pirates behind a 32-point, 10-rebound performance by D.C. Montgomery as WVU won 99-56.

Montgomery was absolutely fantastic for the Mountaineers as he exploded for career-highs in both points and rebounding with 32 and 10, respectively. He also shot 12-for-19 from the floor. He didn't get a lot of help from the starting cast as Tre Welch was the only other notable performer with 11 points and seven rebounds, but backup point guard Waitari Trammell had his second consecutive game with 10+ points as he ended with 14 points and three steals.

The Mountaineers dominated the glass 48-24 and held the Pirates to just 28% shooting. WVU shot 50% from the floor and also made 22 of their 25 shots from the free throw line.

Aaron Wood let the Pirates in scoring with 12 points from off the bench. Kim Dahi also tallied 11 points and three rebounds while Albert Vignale added 10 points.

West Virginia will face the Cincinnati Bearcats in Cincinnati next on February 11th.

No. 8 West Virginia (20-6, 9-4) won its fourth-straight game this evening as the Mountaineers absolutely slaughtered the hosting Cincinnati Bearcats (15-8, 4-7) by a final score of 103-55. The Bearcats never stood a chance as the Mountaineers drained a bevy of threes early on to seize an insurmountable lead in the first half as they went on to win by 58 points and eclipse the triple-digit mark in scoring.

Tre Welch was borderline unstoppable tonight as he sank 12 of his 19 shot attempts and stuffed the stat sheet with 27 points, 11 rebounds, three assists, and five steals. He was not alone as Leonardo Summers hit four threes and scored 16 points while Jud Helms added 11 points. Bobby Dux also scored 14 points and hit four threes while Nile Stevenson totaled 12 points and seven rebounds.

The Mountaineers were lethal shooting the basketball as they shot 57% from the floor and made 13 of their 30 three-point attempts. The Mountaineers also sported a fantastic 10-to-one assist-to-turnover ratio as they tallied 30 team assists while committing a season-low three turnovers.

Logan Crites led the way for the Bearcats with 13 points, three rebounds, and three assists. Everson Heard added 12 points and four boards while Jose Whitney turned in the most impressive individual performance for Cincinnati as he tallied a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds.

With four consecutive wins behind them, one has to wonder whether the Mountaineers are finally starting to live up to their lofty expectations.

West Virginia will host Providence on Sunday.

If you don't mind looking, who is Texas Tech's lone loss so far this year? Also i can't believe BYU is still undefeated

At Washington State. They're not currently ranked, but they're not too far away and do appear to be NCAA tournament-bound.

Nice few wins for WVU, seem to be getting their momentum back.

Do you think BYU has a chance to make it to the tournament undefeated?

They certainly have a chance as the Mountain West isn't that tough, but we'll see. They do have some tougher games coming up.

Providence (11-12, 6-6) gave No. 8 West Virginia (21-6, 10-4) all it could handle, but in the end the Friars fell to the Mountaineers 89-77.

Providence never held a lead after the first few minutes, but the Friars kept the game close throughout as the Mountaineers were never able to build a lead bigger than 15 points. WVU only led by three points at halftime and was never able to extend the lead to double-digits until midway through the second period. After three blowout victories in a row, a close game was a bit of a change for the Mountaineers.

Nevertheless, it was still WVU's fifth consecutive win following their home loss to Louisville on January 27th.

The Friars actually outrebounded the Mountaineers 32-28, but the Mountaineers were very proficient shooting the basketball, both inside and from beyond the arc. WVU was also pesky defensively as the Mountaineers forced 19 Providence turnovers.

Tre Welch led a WVU starting five that saw all five starters score in double-figures. Tre Welch tallied 22 points, six rebounds, three steals, and a pair of blocks. Leandro Summers totaled 15 points and four rebounds while D.C. Montgomery added 15 points, three boards, and three steals. Jud Helms also ended with 10 points, seven rebounds, and three steals. Anderson Black had a deceptively good outing as he tied his season-high assist total with 10 to go along with 11 points, three rebounds, and five steals as he tallied a double-double.

Vitor Alujevic led Providence with 22 points and five rebounds. Senior point guard W.M. Fellers paced the offense with 16 points and six assists while Herbert Sutton banged down low to 12 points and eight rebounds. Harding Zordic also added 11 points and four boards.

The Mountaineers only have one game next week as they will travel an hour north along I-79 to Pittsburgh as they will take on the Panthers in the Backyard Brawl.
