    vs.
    Cincinnati (12-10) vs. #2 West Virginia (19-1)
    WVU Coliseum
    Morgantown, WV
    January 26th, 2028

West Virginia (19-1, 8-0) won its 16th consecutive game this evening as the No. 2 Mountaineers trounced Cincinnati 77-55. The Bearcats (12-10, 3-6) have now lost four consecutive games and are seeing their once-promising season quickly spiral out of control.

The Mountaineers took an early lead and, as has become customary this year, maintained a solid advantage throughout in an easy-going 20-point home victory.

Tre Welch led the way for WVU with 19 points, nine rebounds, three assists, three steals, and two blocks. Deno Woodards added 16 points and three boards while Waitari Trammell paced the offense at point guard with 10 points, five assists, and three steals. Fellow point guard Fred Joiner also came off the bench to add 17 points and three rebounds.

Freshman forward Ervin Nicholas led Cincinnati in scoring with 11 points and three rebounds. Christian Butler tallied 10 points and seven rebounds while Marty Hoskins added 10 points.

Next, the Mountaineers will hit the road to take on Connecticut this coming Saturday.

      Gampel Pavilion
      Storrs, CT

The Huskies (12-9, 4-5) gave it their all and had No. 2 West Virginia (20-1, 9-0) on edge for the majority of the game. However, after trailing by double-digits in the second half in a tough environment on the road, the Mountaineers made their shots when it counted as they roared back in the latter portion of the second half to top Connecticut 71-63.

Deno Woodards was key in the comeback for the Mountaineers as he hit five three-pointers en route to 15 points and six rebounds. Waitari Trammell added 15 points, four assists, and three steals while Tre Welch totaled 10 points, seven rebounds, three assists, and three steals. Leandro Summers tallied 10 points, four rebounds, and three assists while R.J. Peterson hit three three-pointers from off the bench to add 13 points.

Russ Beck led UConn with a game-high 17 points and seven rebounds. Lyle Dunnington added 15 points and three boards while Ralfeal Horton totaled 13 points and three rebounds.

West Virginia will face a stiff test next week as they will travel to Milwaukee, WI to take on No. 6 Marquette.

          #2 West Virginia (21-1) vs. #8 Marquette (17-5)
          BMO Harris Bradley Center
          February 3th, 2028
          Milwaukee, WI

No. 2 West Virginia (21-1, 10-0) stayed undefeated in Big East Conference play this evening as they faced No. 8 Marquette (17-5, 7-3), defeating the Golden Eagles 74-71 in overtime in Milwaukee, WI.

Both teams played great defense as neither team shot better than 35% from the floor. The game was tied at 65 apiece after regulation. The Mountaineers seized a three-point late in the overtime period, but the Golden Eagles had a chance to tie the game and send it to another overtime at the end of the first overtime period, but Len Kengsu's wild three-point attempt bounced off the back of the iron and the Mountaineers escaped to keep their undefeated conference season alive.

Marquette only shot six-for-21 from beyond the arc today and the Mountaineers were worse at six-for-23. However, the Mountaineers did hold a substantial advantage at getting to the free throw line as they drilled 20 of their 25 free throw attempts while Marquette only made it to the free throw stripe 10 times, making seven of them. Neither team was particularly sharp offensively.

Sophomore power forward Nile Stevenson led WVU with 19 points and 12 rebounds, both of which are career-highs for him. He also blocked a pair of shots. Tre Welch struggled mightily shooting the basketball, but still totaled 16 points, 13 rebounds, and three blocks. Fred Joiner starred from off the bench as he scored a career-high 23 points and hit seven shots from the free throw stripe.

Dez Keita led Marquette with 18 points, three rebounds, and four assists. Todor Parham added 14 points, eight rebounds, four steals, and three blocks.

West Virginia has a week off before hosting bottom-feeding DePaul next Thursday evening.

Yes, I might be forgetting, but I don't ever remember having a team ranked #1 before in the regular season, so it's nice to see.

What a great season so far...and the number one team in the country! Thata boy!

Any chance we could get a look at the mid-major top 10 in the next around the ncaa look??

Thanks. Unfortunately, I can't post the mid-major top 10 as I'm actually a few weeks ahead of the games I've posted so far. I'm trying to catch up and I don't have a save at this point in the season. Maybe if I think about it I'll do one for before the conference tournaments.

                      EDIT: Done!

I'll go ahead and post another game now as I continue to catch up...

                        vs.

No. 1 West Virginia (22-1, 11-0) didn't come into this game with anything to prove. They were the undisputed #1 team in the country after Georgia Tech's loss to No. 3 Duke at Cameron Indoor Stadium. However, they did not play like the top team in the land this evening as they seemingly sleepwalked throughout the entirety of their matchup with bottom-feeding DePaul (8-16, 2-11). The Blue Demons were on a relative hot streak as of late as they came in having won two consecutive games (against Georgetown and Cincinnati), after losing their first 10 conference games.

The Mountaineers seized an early lead and led by 15 at the half. They led by as many as 21 points late in the second half before before the Blue Demons stormed back in the late going, cutting the lead to as few as seven points in the final 20 seconds as the Mountaineers only won by a slim nine-point margin, 97-88.

It was a horrible performance for the Mountaineers on the defensive end as they allowed DePaul to shoot 10-for-19 from beyond the three-point arc and 53% from the field overall. 88 points is the most points given up by the Mountaineers this season. Their previous high was 76 against both Alabama and Georgetown. The only thing the Mountaineers did well defensively was force turnovers as the Blue Demons turned the basketball over 18 times.

Depaul's junior point guard Jermaine Frederick played a big part in fueling the Blue Demons' comeback as he hit 12 of 18 from the field and scored 33 points, besting his previous career-high of 22 points. Dameon McGrath also had a nice game for DePaul as he totaled 13 points and three assists while Arthur Demond added 10 points and four boards from off the bench.

The Mountaineers played well offensively, as evidenced by their 97 points. They were especially effective shooting the three-pointer and making their free throws, as they hit 12 of 25 from beyond the arc and made 23 of their 26 attempts from the charity stripe.

All five WVU starters scored in double-figures. Waitari Trammell led the Mountaineers with 19 points, nine assists, and three steals, missing out on a double-double by a single assist. Deno Woodards hit four threes and ended with 16 points, three rebounds, three assists, and three steals. Tre Welch had another great game for the Mountaineers scoring and on the glass as he scored 15 points and collected 11 rebounds while fellow big man Nile Stevenson tallied 11 points, nine rebounds, and three steals. Leandro Summers scored 12 points while Fred Joiner came off the bench to drain a pair of threes and end with 13 points.

West Virginia will host Syracuse on Sunday. The Orange started well in conference play, but have dropped three consecutive games to fall to 12-9 overall and 8-4 in Big East Conference action. They will be looking to get things back on track with a chance to knock off the nation's #1 team on Sunday.

After struggling against DePaul in their last game, No. 1 West Virginia (23-1, 12-0) looked to be up to the same old tired tricks this evening against Syracuse (13-10, 8-5). The Orange closed to within a point early in the second half as the Orange stormed back from a 42-36 halftime deficit to cut the lead to one point at 42-41. However, from there it was all WVU as the Mountaineers went on a dramatic 59-18 run for the remainder of the second half to crush the Orange 101-59.

It was WVU's second 100-point offensive explosion of the season (after defeating Tulane 113-63 earlier in the season). The Mountaineers shot 54% from the floor and made 20 of 24 from the free throw line. They also outrebounded Syracuse 49 to 25.

However, WVU's defense in the second half was stifling, as well. The Mountaineers tallied a total of eight blocks against Syracuse, most of them coming in the second half. Senior guard Leandro Summers was the leading blocker of the game as he blocked a career-high three shots. 6'1" Guard R.J. Peterson also got in on the block party as he blocked a shot of his own.

Tre Welch led the Mountaineers with 25 points, 11 boards, and two blocks as he had a spectacular shooting night, hitting 11 of his 14 shot attempts. Leandro Summers added 15 points and three blocks while Waitari Trammell paced the offense with 15 points, five rebounds, and three assists. Deno Woodards added 13 points, five rebounds, and three assists while rarely-used freshman center Daniel Cox used the extra playing time from the blowout to record a career-high 12 points and three rebounds in just six minutes of game time.

Tony Sorenson led Syracuse with 17 points while Douglas Horner added 16.

West Virginia will face Seton Hall next Wednesday.
