      Rice (5-0) vs. #1 West Virginia (9-1)

      December 17th, 2036

Barry Henning missed a three-pointer as time expired in overtime and No. 1 West Virginia (9-1) lost their first game of the season, falling 88-86 in overtime against undefeated Rice (5-0) this evening in Morgantown.

The Mountaineers and Owls played a back-and-forth game, and it was only fitting that the game went to overtime. The overtime was back-and-forth, as well, but Rice guard Dominic Gooden scored a two-pointer with just 3.9 seconds left to put Rice up 88-86. The Mountaineers did a good job to push the ball past halfcourt on their ensuing possession and got a timeout with 1.8 seconds left, but Henning missed his catch-and-shoot three-pointer and the Owls pulled off the huge upset and kept their surprising undefeated season alive.

Gooden scored a game-high 29 points for Rice, and shot 10/16 from the floor. Brennan Estrada also scored 14 points and dished out six assists for the Owls and Chauncey Brooks added 10 points and seven boards.

Rice held a decisive advantage at the free throw line, where they attempted 33 free throws to West Virginia's 15 attempts. Rice shot 70% (23/33) on their 33 attempts.

"Defensively, we were sloppy and there was no excuse for sending [Rice] to the [free throw] line 33 times," said a frustrated West Virginia head coach James Frizzell after the game. "Offensively, we didn't play particularly well, either, but our defensive effort was frankly embarrassing. We were lazy out there and I think this game was an embarrassment for our team."

Rice shot 55% (30/55) from the floor tonight compared to West Virginia's 39% (30/77). The Mountaineers outrebounded Rice 39-31 and held a 13-5 advantage in made three-pointers, but Rice's advantage at the free throw line ultimately proved decisive.

Junior power forward Belton Mombollet scored a career-best 25 points and grabbed six rebounds to keep West Virginia in the game. Mombollet blew past his previous career-high of 14 points. Carson Lavender added 14 points and nine rebounds and Damond Pasco scored 12 points.

West Virginia's top two scorers this year, Stefon Hull and Felipe Delgado, struggled tonight, combining for just 14 points and 4/19 shooting from the floor. Both were benched for the overtime period in favor of Joshua Wilkerson and Barry Henning.

West Virginia will head to Blacksburg, VA to take on Virginia Tech next week.
The Hokies are off to a disappointing 5-2 start to the season are are now unranked, but they'll be looking to hand their rivals their second consecutive loss.

West Virginia was damn near perfect from three and took 20 more shots, gotta give Rice credit for making the most of their opportunities considering what they were up against.1

Yeah, I didn't expect Rice of all teams to beat us. We've had some puzzling losses in recent years.

That was actually a typo. It should've been 13/37 from three, not 13/17. I went ahead and edited the post to correct that. Thanks for noticing it! 13/37 (35%) still isn't that bad, but defense was our main problem, anyways.

They work well for me. The ones on the front page are the ones I’m still using I’m pretty sure, though I’ll have to double-check.

They could be kind of difficult if you’re just starting out with the game, though (unless you’re a better player than I am). There’s some other good slider sets in the CH 2K8 forum if these don’t work for you, too. The sliders I’m using are based off of one of those sets, but I’ve made them more difficult over time and don’t even remember the base slider set I was using at this point.

I would suggest not using these sliders if you’re starting a closed legacy. If you’re going to start an open legacy with a decent rated team you may be fine, however I tried using these sliders in a new closed legacy I started and my team averaged 24% from the field through 5 games before I changed to a new set. The CPU team shot right around the same mark in each game as well

Man, still pumped to see this dynasty going strong. You’re dynasty has been nothing short of impressive!

Congrats on the back-to-back titles. That is not an easy feat, even in a video game, so to pull that off is something to be excited about.

Never thought your first loss would come to a team like Rice but that rough shooting finally caught up with you guys. Would have been crazy to pull it off with a three to end OT to keep the undefeated season alive, but I think you know that this team isn’t in the conversation of a perfect season. Plenty of young pieces so take your lumps early, get the squad to gel and you guys will be ready to roll when it matters late in the season.

We pretty much just went down swinging. They were playing zone, and we were getting a lot of open looks, but they weren't falling. I have trouble turning down open threes. It's kind of a shame because Lavender and Mombollet had great games in the paint. Even so, our defense was our main issue, though. Offensively, we still did good enough to win, but we can't allow that many points. Our offense is definitely not as good as last year, though.

The CPU team shot right around the same mark in each game as well
Interesting. Also, I think later in legacy teams tend to be higher-rated than they are when you first start a legacy, so this might play a factor (what I mean is that auto-generated players are better than the players you start with in the game - i.e. an "average" team in 2036-2037 is better than an "average" team in 2007-2008 in-game). A lot of sports video games have this happen (I know NCAA Football 14 has this issue), so CH 2K8 isn't alone in that regard.

Losing to Rice was definitely frustrating. They're currently undefeated, but they haven't really played anyone and they're Rice... I've had some bad losses in this legacy, though. If I remember right, two seasons ago when I won the national title, the team only lost three games, but two of them came to sub-.500 teams.

Thanks! I'm looking forward to yours (if you haven't already started it). I haven't checked this forum in a few weeks, so I have some catching up to do!

Yes sir Coach Norm Roberts and SMU are back and excited about the future of the program! Feels good to be back playing this game. Easily my favorite sports game of a time.

Those random losses to really bad teams are what always keep me on my toes. You can never go into any game and just expect to get a win, let alone a blowout win, regardless of how dominant your team may be.

Yep, you never know what’s going to happen. Sometimes you’ll go out there and blowout a team you shouldn’t, and then turnaround and not be able to hit the broad side of a barn the next game and lose to a vastly inferior team.
