2036-2037 West Virginia Individual Player Preview

      Starters:

PG #15 Damond Pasco 6'1 193 (Philadelphia, PA) 88 overall JR

Damond Pasco returns for his junior season as a second-year starter. The junior didn't have quite the breakout season that some thought he might last year, but he was still an effective point guard and shot the three-pointer well. He ended up shooting 40% from three-point range, which fits the WVU offense perfectly.

SG #22 Stefon Hull 6'5 216 (Phoenix, AZ) 84 overall SO

Stefon Hull had a rough start to last season, but had a great run to end the season. He finished shooting 38% from three-point range and scored 8.6 points per game. Hull was billed as an excellent marksman coming out of high school, and it wouldn't be surprising to see his deep shooting jump up to over 40% this season. He will have to adapt to starting level minutes, though, and showed some weaknesses with fatigue last season on the rare occasions when he was exposed to extended minutes on the floor.

SF #11 Felipe Delgado 6'9 218 (Seattle, WA) 90 overall SR

After starting at power forward last year, Felipe Delgado slides back to his natural small forward position again this year. Delgado surprised a lot of people when he decided to come back for his senior season, and he seems primed for his best season left. The senior poured in 12.9 points per game last year (second on the team) while shooting 45% from the floor and nearly 39% from three-point range. Delgado has excellent size for the small forward position and will likely see minutes at power forward again this year, as well.

PF #33 Belton Mombollet 6'9 234 (Memphis, TN) 84 overall JR

Belton Mombollet was Delgado's backup at power forward last year and will slide back into the starting lineup this season. The 6'9" junior's shooting percentage edged up to nearly 44% last year, but he will need to improve that if he doesn't want to be a liability on the floor this season. He has some ability to stretch the floor to keep the defenses honest, but he's only shot 19% from three-point range over his first two seasons.

      C #50 Carson Lavender 6'11 260 (Detroit, MI) 82 overall SO

Carson Lavender steps in to try his best to replace the two-time reigning National Player of the Year Nik Buscher. Lavender won't be able to live up to Buscher's standard, but he should have a solid season. Lavender has solid size, although he's still 4" shorter than the behemoth that was Nik Buscher, and is an excellent defender and rebounder. He also had a solid offensive showing last year, when he shot a cool 50% from the floor and 80% from the free throw line, albeit in limited opportunities. He'll get more opportunities to score this year and should log heavy minutes.

      Bench:

PG #1 Morris Filipovic 6'1 181 (Berkeley, CA) 83 overall SO (RS)

Morris Filipovic redshirted his first season in Morgantown and served as Damond Pasco's backup point guard last year, when he logged 11.6 minutes per game and averaged 2.4 PPG and 1.9 APG. The rising sophomore struggled shooting (39% FG, 21% 3PT) and he will need to try to improve on that this year as he looks to take over for Pasco, possibly as early as next season. Filipovic isn't a great jump shooter, but if he can improve on his shooting enough to at least keep defenses honest, that would be key.

SG #31 Joshua Wilkerson 6'5 203 (Philadelphia, PA) 85 overall SO (RS)

Joshua Wilkerson struggled in limited opportunities two years ago and redshirted last year. However, he has shown considerable improvement over the offseason and head coach James Frizzell has been talking him up. Though he shot just 26% and scored 1.5 PPG his freshman season two years ago, look for him to step up to the plate and make himself into a solid rotation player this year. He's not a great shooter, but he has good size and an ability to finish around the basket.

SG #34 Barry Henning 6'8 215 (Rocky Mount, NC) 81 overall FR

Freshman shooting guard Barry Henning joins West Virginia as the No. 3 overall player and No. 1-rated shooting guard out of Rocky Mount, NC. Henning has tremendous size for the '2' guard at 6'8". His jump shot has some room to grow, but he has a great all-around game and should be an instant contributor, even with West Virginia's loaded backcourt.

SF #23 Johnny Riggs 6'6 209 (Erie, PA) 80 overall FR

Freshman small forward Johnny Riggs was the No. 8 overall player and No. 2-rated small forward out of Erie, PA. He has a great mid-range and outside shot, and is very athletic. He also is excellent at finishing around the basket. He will get minutes in the rotation as a backup small forward and possibly some minutes as a backup power forward this season.

SF #30 Kerwin Duncan 6'7 203 (Philadelphia, PA) 77 overall FR (RS)

Kerwin Duncan redshirted last year and will try to work his way into the rotation this season, though Johnny Riggs' arrival may throw a wrench into those plans. He was the No. 10-rated small forward out of Philadelphia, PA in last year's recruiting class. He has quick hands, which come in handy defensively, but he's struggled with his offense in scrimmages and practices.

PF #12 George Neale 6'9 258 (Tulsa, OK) 80 overall SR (RS)

Redshirt senior George Neale walked on to the squad way back in 2032 and may finally get a chance to get some regular minutes this season. Neale has never averaged more than 3.6 minutes per game in any of his first three seasons of eligibility, but he's been solid when he has seen the floor. He's a solid player, but he doesn't really stand out in any one area.

C #10 Brandin Plummer 7'2 302 (Chula Vista, CA) 71 overall SO (RS)

Brandin Plummer redshirted two years ago, and played some reserve minutes last year. The former walk-on will likely be pinned to the end of the bench this year, as well. Plummer has tremendous size, which gives him a niche that could allow him to see the floor in some specialized situations against bigger teams. He has quick hands and and is solid at finishing around the basket with his size.

      Reserves:

SG #20 Darrel Iguodala 6'6 199 (Santa Maria, CA) 77 overall FR (Redshirting)

Darrel Iguodala is the No. 22 overall and No. 7-rated shooting guard out of Santa Maria, CA in this year's recruiting class. The freshman will redshirt this season. He's a raw player with tremendous athleticism, and he will hopefully use the redshirt year to improve his offensive fundamentals and shooting.

      C #44 Tasmir Nelson 6'10 219 (Laredo, TX) 73 overall FR (Redshirting)

Tasmir Nelson is the No. 139 overall and No. 9-rated center out of Laredo, TX in this year's recruiting class. Nelson has good size, but is still raw and will redshirt this season to hone his skills, especially since he would likely be stuck on the end of the bench otherwise. He has good athleticism, and should be a solid player down the road for the Mountaineers.

The Mountaineers got off to a hot start and led by 23 points, 44-21, at the half. The Eagles played better in the second half to cull the bleeding to some extent, but the Mountaineers still went on to win by 25 points.

              November 14th, 2036

No. 3 West Virginia (2-0) overcame a double-digit first half lead to overcome No. 10 NC State (1-1) this evening in Morgantown 85-74.

The Mountaineers trailed 41-33 at halftime, but the Mountaineers went on an 8-0 run out of the break to tie the game at 41-41. Both teams played it close for the next 10 minutes or so, but the Mountaineers went on a 21-10 run to end the game after the game was tied up at 64 apiece with the minutes winding down.

After trailing at halftime 41-33, the Mountaineers erupted for 52 points after halftime and outscored NC State by 19 points, 52-33, in the second half.

"We did a good job to note lose our composure after falling behind early," said West Virginia head coach James Frizzell. "We were really struggling in the first half and it seemed like things were on the verge of getting out of hand. The 8-0 run to tie it coming out of halftime was key, and the late run we made to close out the game was tremendous. We started to hit some shots we had been missing for most of the game, and we really started to step up on the defensive end of the court."

Stefon Hull scored 26 points to lead West Virginia in scoring. He shot 5/8 from beyond the three-point arc. Felipe Delgado scored 17 points and grabbed eight rebounds. Joshua Wilkerson tallied 10 points, four rebounds, and five steals from off the bench.

Several Mountaineers battled foul trouble tonight. Belton Mombollet fouled out in the second half and was limited to 23 minutes of action. Carson Lavender racked up three first-half fouls and was limited to just 19 minutes of game time. Felipe Delgado was also in foul trouble, as he picked up his fourth foul early in the second half and was only able to log 25 minutes.

Sophomore guard Alvaidas Warner scored 14 points from off the bench to lead NC State in scoring. Henry Dumbliauskas totaled 13 points, four rebounds, and five assists and Colin Crisp added 12 points.

West Virginia has two days off before their next game against Texas Southern in the quarterfinal round of the Hawaiian Invitational. Should the Mountaineers defeat Texas Southern, as they likely will, they will face the winner of No. 1 Texas A&M/No. 20 Kentucky in the semifinals in what should be another highly anticipated matchup.

Congrats on the back-to-back Natties, Coach! Truly a remarkable run you’re on. Especially looking at how many consecutive years you’ve gone with losing less than 10 games. No matter who you lose, it’s a reload and never a rebuild.

Getting Delgado back and playing in his natural spot should be huge for the offense. Hopefully the bigs can do their part in a bigger role. Will be really excited to see the growth of Henning and Riggs down the road.

You’re off to a great start so far, even with a few bumps. I’d say a run at the trifecta is definitely possible.

This is easily the best dynasty I have ever seen. I am in your 2018-19 season right now. I am a HUGE wvu fan, which makes it even better! We are really struggling this year though. Anyways, I am going to go buy a Xbox 360 and 2k8 just to do my own legacy. This is awesome!!

Yeah, by overall rating we are the best team this year so we definitely have a decent shot. Losing Buscher hurts us, but other guys are stepping up so far. I think we’re a better shooting team this year from three-point range.

We definitely reload. For better or for worse, this game even the best players in this game don’t leave until they’ve played 2-3 years, so it makes it easier to sustain dominance than in modern day college basketball, I’d say. For example, I think Buscher should have turned pro after his freshman year.

But the same holds true for the other elite teams in the game, so I don’t think it’s an unfair advantage still.

Thanks, man. You’ve got a long way to go (and some more titles to go, too)!

Yeah, WVU has been awful this year, which is surprising. They managed to beat Kansas last week which gave me some hope, but then they followed it up with another loss. It looks like the NIT is the best case scenario at this point.

Henning had a great game. 5-5 from deep, good win! Wvu has #1 Tennessee today, hopefully we hang with them. Tough away game.

Yeah, Henning looks like a good one.

The Tennessee game went about as expected. The team just isn’t any good this year, it seems, unfortunately.
