    Hawaiian Invitational - Semifinal Round

Tonight, the No. 1 and No. 3 teams in the land met in Honolulu, and only one of them could emerge with an unblemished record. It was the two-time defending national champions that proved their mettle once again, as No. 3 West Virginia (4-0) knocked off No. 1 Texas A&M 71-64.

Barry Henning hit the biggest shot of his life with 1:06 remaining to give West Virginia a 66-60 lead over the Aggies (3-1). From there, the Mountaineers hit five of their last six free throws to seal the victory and hand the No. 1 team their first loss of the season.

"What a great atmosphere," remarked West Virginia head coach James Frizzell. "This felt like an NCAA Tournament game, and I hope we really put on a great show for everyone. We struggled shooting the basketball, so I'm really proud that we were still able to come away with the victory. Defensively, I thought we played really well and, even though our shots weren't falling, I was pleased we were aggressive enough to get to the free throw line early and often."

The Mountaineers only shot 31% (22/70) from the floor, but did have a nice night at the charity stripe, where they shot 19/24 (83%). The Aggies shot a more respectable 46% (28/61) from the floor, but only shot 6/6 from the free throw line. West Virginia also outrebounded Texas A&M 40-32.

Carson Lavender totaled a double-double for West Virginia with 12 points, 17 rebounds, and three blocks. Joshua Wilkerson and Johnny Riggs each scored 10 points from off the bench.

The West Virginia bench came to play today, scoring 35 of the Mountaineers' 71 points. The Mountaineers' bench shot 43% (10/23) from the field. In comparison, the starting lineup shot just 26% (12/47), even when including Carson Lavender's respectable 5/8 from the field.

Virgil Tamir scored 20 points and grabbed four rebounds to lead Texas A&M in scoring. Will Nuualitia just missed out on a double-double with 15 points and nine rebounds and Milton Dancy added 13 points and seven rebounds.

West Virginia will face No. 12 Oregon in the Hawaiian Invitational Shootout Championship Game tomorrow night. The Ducks outlasted Virginia 77-71 to advance to the final game.

                Haha, yeah.

It was an ugly win, but a win is a win. I wouldn't expect to win a game against a team of the caliber considering how terribly our "star" players shot.

Then again, this is part of the idea that goes behind how I construct my teams. I recruit shooters at PG/SG/SF and want a tall center (sometimes I also have a "big" power forward, although I do like my PF to have a somewhat competent jump shot) who can rebound well to clean up missed shots inside, so that even if the shots aren't falling we can at least get a lot of second-chance opportunities. That kind of worked out against Texas A&M as Lavender hauled down 17 rebounds.

                      Hawaiian Invitational - Championship Game

No. 3 West Virginia (5-0) pulled away in the second half to defeat No. 12 Oregon 82-64 this evening in Honolulu, HI to win the Hawaiian Shootout.

The Ducks (2-1) only trailed 40-36 at halftime, but the Mountaineers took control in the second half, outscoring the Ducks 42-28 over the course of the final 20 minutes.

The Mountaineers turned the basketball over a season-high 19 times, but they made up for it with a fantastic outside shooting performance. From three-point range, the Mountaineers shot 45%, making 18 of their 40 attempts from beyond the arc.

The Mountaineers also outrebounded Oregon 44-25 and held to the Ducks to just 35% (21/60) from the floor. The Ducks were able to get to the free throw line often, especially in the first half, which allowed them to keep afloat for the game's first 20 minutes.

"I'm really proud of our guys to go into this tournament and win against such stiff competition," said West Virginia head coach James Frizzell. "We faced a couple of the best teams in college basketball and we put up some good results, even when we weren't always at our best. And it's always good to come home with some new hardware."

The Ducks had the size advantage down low as 7'1" sophomore center Shema Warner made it tough for the Mountaineers to get much down in the paint, but the Mountaineers' guards stepped it up. Stefon Hull scored 16 points to lead all Mountaineers in scoring and Joshua Wilkerson scored 13 points from off the bench. Damond Pasco also shot a perfect 4/4 from the field and tallied 12 points and six assists. Felipe Delgado also totaled 13 points and seven rebounds.

Vladimir Kummer scored 15 points and added five steals to lead Oregon in scoring. Donny Finley was the only other Ducks player to score in double-figures as the senior guard scored 13 points on 4/11 shooting.

Next, after a 10-day break, the West Virginia will host the East Carolina Pirates on November 29th.

Stefon Hull scored 22 points and hit six three-pointer to lead No. 1 West Virginia (6-0) to a 69-49 victory over the East Carolina Pirates (3-6) this evening in Morgantown.

The Pirates actually led 29-26 at halftime as the Mountaineers struggled to shoot and defend early on. However, after a stern talking to at halftime, they ratcheted up their effort after halftime and outscored the overmatched Pirates 43-20 the rest of the way to win by 20 points.

Carson Lavender added a 14-point, 11-rebound double-double for the Mountaineers. Felipe Delgado also scored 11 points, but shot just 4/12 from the field.

The Mountaineers forced East Carolina into 16 turnovers.

Sophomore guard B.A. Payne led East Carolina in scoring with 15 points. No other Pirates' player scored in double-figures.

Next, West Virginia travels to Terre Haute, IN to take on the Indiana State Sycamores. The Sycamores are off to a hot 5-1 start, but the Mountaineers should still be heavy favorites. However, as tonight's first half shows, anyone can be beaten on any given day if the right circumstances come together.

Not the best start for West Virginia, but I guess all the winning has to have its downside somewhere lol.
