    (3) Notre Dame (28-6) vs. (1) West Virginia (31-3)
    Madison Square Garden
    New York, NY
    March 14th, 2036

No. 1 West Virginia (31-3) captured their seventh consecutive Big East Tournament Championship and won their 12th consecutive game this evening with a dominating 91-63 blowout of No. 3-seeded Notre Dame (28-6).

The Fighting Irish, who defeated the Mountaineers earlier this season 78-75 in South Bend, never really made tonight's game competitive as the Mountaineers took control of the game from the opening tip. The Mountaineers led 47-29 at halftime and little changed in the second half as they led by double-digits throughout and led by as many as 30 points late in the game.

After struggling last night, Nik Buscher erupted for 30 points, 12 rebounds, and four blocks this evening. The junior 7'3" center shot 15/23 from the field. Felipe Delgado also added 16 points and seven rebounds for West Virginia and Stefon Hull came off the bench to hit five three-pointers and total 19 points and four steals.

Corbin Hicks just missed out on a double-double for Notre Dame with 19 points and nine assists. Austen Simon added 13 points and senior forward Ricky Bates tallied 11 points, 11 rebounds, and four assists.

West Virginia only turned the basketball over five times tonight and shot 49% (35/71) from the floor. The Mountaineers also outrebounded Notre Dame 35-23 and held a 71-52 advantage in field goals attempted.

"This is a special team," remarked West Virginia head coach James Frizzell after the game. "We had a special team last year, and we brought most everyone back and added some new talent. We're another year older and another year wiser. We hit some rough patches mid-season, but we've really came into form over the last 10 games or so. This is an experienced team, and we know this is the time of year you have to really start putting things together for a run in March, and that's exactly what we've done.

"We're in a good position to make another deep run in the NCAA Tournament, and we're going to be satisfied with nothing short of another national championship."

With the win, the Mountaineers are a near lock for the No. 1 overall seed in the NCAA Tournament. The Mountaineers are ranked first in the AP and Coaches' Polls, and are also ranked first in the RPI rankings.

Re: Coaching Legacy of James Frizzell (CH 2K8)

Time for a bit of stream of consciousness before the Big Dance......

The expectations for this year are nothing short of a National Title. This team is better than last year, so really nothing less is acceptable. If we do so, this senior class will have went to the Final Four all four seasons, including three national championship game appearances, and two national championships.

However, there’s going to be a lot of change this offseason. We are guaranteed to lose two starters (Clement and Rickert), and it’s a near certainty that Delgado and Buscher will elect to go pro as rising seniors, so it’s likely we will be replacing four starters going into next year. Pasco could also declare as a rising junior, but I don’t think that’s particularly likely.

In any case, we’re going to have to find a lot of new faces to put the ball into the basket next year. I think Hull can step in as a volume shooter. He’s played well down the stretch this year. Pasco can also probably increase his usage rate. Buscher isn’t really repaceable, but Lavender can be competent at center. Mombollet will likely start at PF next season. SF is a bit of a wildcard, but redshirt freshman Kerwin Duncan will probably get the start there. Or redshirt sophomore Joshua Dickerson if he’s improved enough, since his true freshman season last year was pretty disastrous.

We also have another good haul of talent coming in with this year’s recruiting class, but I don’t think it’s likely any of them start.

Regardless, this March Madness is going to be a bit of the end of an era for the most successful chapter in WVU basketball history. I don’t think it’s likely we’ll be anywhere near as good next season (not that we won’t be ranked and in the national title conversation, possibly). Nik Buscher is a generational talent whose talent level I may never get a chance to coach again. His size, rebounding, post moves, and defense are just top-notch. I’ve had fantastic power forwards and centers over the course of this legacy since I really emphasize the position in my offense, but Buscher is the best of the bunch and it probably isn’t close.

Some parity in success is good for the longetivity of a dynasty (not that you’re having any issues with that). Congrats on another conference title, good luck in the big dance

I think I had too much success too fast earlier in this dynasty, but not much can be done about that at this point. I’m probably too consistently good, even now, but then again we’re not on the level of 1970s UCLA, either. I still lose enough games to keep it interesting for me. I agree that if I were winning national championships every year, things would eventually get old (four titles in 28 years thus far).

I wish the Big East were stronger. It’s consistently been the weakest power conference since I got to WVU. At least it’s been decent this year (at the top, at least). The ACC is so stacked year after year, though. That would be a lot of fun!

Next year appears to be a step down, in any case, so that should be interesting. Then again, maybe the new guys will step up and we’ll be every bit as good as this year. You never know. I do know we’re not going to have our safety blanket Nik Buscher; it’s always nice to be able to feed Mr. Dependable when the shots aren’t falling.

                      NCAA Tournament - First Round

Nik Buscher scored 19 points to go along with 11 rebounds and four blocks to lead top-seeded West Virginia (32-3) to an easy 91-61 victory this evening over the 16th-seeded Samford Bulldogs (15-18) in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.

Boakai Clement added 14 points and Stefon Hull scored 16 points and grabbed four rebounds from off the bench.

The Bulldogs kept the game close for most of the first half, but the Mountaineers pulled ahead in the final minutes to take a 45-30 lead at halftime. West Virginia continued to pull away after halftime and Samford never threatened the rest of the way on their way to a 30-point defeat.

Christiano Goodwin totaled 18 points, five rebounds, and four assists to lead Samford in scoring. Mychal Chambers added 13 points and four assists and Glenn Beacham tallied 10 points and five rebounds.

The Mountaineers didn't have the best shooting night (43% FG), but held a 45-32 advantage in rebounding and a 10-5 advantage in turnovers forced. Samford only shot 36% (21/58) from the floor.

West Virginia will face ninth-seeded California on Sunday in the second round. The Golden Bears defeated Duke 78-72 in their first round matchup. California finished tied for second in the Pac-10 and will be a tough out.
