Yeah, it's a bit of a kill-joy to face a 15-loss team in the Final Four, but it is what it is, and they beat me earlier this season, so I have some reason to be nervous about the game. That, and they are 93 OVR, which makes them the best team I've faced in the tournament yet.

They're definitely hot. They finished the regular season with a putrid 14-15 record before reeling off eight-straight postseason wins, including winning the ACC Tournament.

This is kind of random, but if inquiring minds would like to know, this is my typical rotation pattern each half (minutes given are approximate time marks in the half):

Obviously, adjustments are made on a game-by-game basis given how well players are playing, and the foul situation, but I typically stick pretty close to this.

            vs.
            (1) West Virginia (31-8) vs. (7) Duke (23-15)
            Reliant Stadium
            Houston, TX
            April 5th, 2031
            NCAA Tournament - National Semifinal

Clayton Krywonis scored a career-high 35 points on 12/17 shooting as the #7-seeded Duke Blue Devils continued their improbable run, defeating West Virginia 96-83.

The Blue Devils (23-15) took the lead for good in the first few minutes of the game and led by as many as 16 points in the first half. The Mountaineers (31-8) battled back to cut the Duke lead to 12 points at the half, 48-36, but the Blue Devils pulled away again early in the second half, increasing their lead to as many as 18 points early in the second frame of play. West Virginia would cut the lead to as few as six points, 72-66, midway through the second half, but Duke responded with a huge run, at one point leading by 20 points, as they cruised easily to a 13-point victory to advance to the National Championship Game Monday night.

Marty Sweetney added 20 points in just 16 minutes from off the bench for Duke. Mayele Shiffner also tallied 12 points and seven rebounds while Dragutin Bush paced the offense with eight points and a career-best 14 assists.

Duke shot 59% (32/54) from the floor overall, and made a shocking 13 of their 16 three-point attempts, an 81% clip. Duke didn't let a lot of shots fly from deep, but when they did they made them at the best clip in Final Four history. Duke was also very efficient from the free throw stripe, where they shot 19/24 (79%).

"We played a perfect game in nearly every aspect," beamed Duke head coach Walker Muhleisen immediately after the game. "We picked our shots well and executed. We were simply flawless in almost every respect. West Virginia has a great squad, so to beat them for the second time this season is a huge accomplishment."

Duke turned the basketball over 18 times tonight, but that was really the only flaw one could find with their play in tonight's game. It was easily negated by their historic shooting outing.

Duke also defeated West Virginia in their regular season game back on January 9th at Cameron Indoor Stadium, where the Blue Devils won 74-68.

Senior center O.J. Palmer totaled 22 points, four rebounds, and five steals for West Virginia in his final career game. Fellow senior and leading scorer Fred Joiner struggled, scoring just 10 points on 4/14 shooting. Freshman Myron DeLeon scored 22 points and grabbed five rebounds while fellow freshman Willie Gomes tallied 12 points, seven rebounds, five steals, and three blocks.

"It's disappointing, obviously, but it is what it is," said West Virginia head coach James Frizzell. "We had a great year and came up just short. They had the hot hand tonight and they hit nearly every open shot we gave them. You really have to give Duke credit. Not only did they sweep us this year, but they're on a heck of a run after entering post-season play sub-.500. I'll be rooting for them to win it all Monday night; the turnaround they've had is simply amazing."

The Blue Devils will have their work cut out for them on Monday evening as they will take on the Duquesne Dukes, who have a 37-2 record and are the #1 overall seed out of the East Regional. Duquesne blew out Clemson 103-77 in the other National Semfinal game tonight, setting up an epic National Championship, pitting the #7-seeded Cinderella Blue Devils against the top overall seed in the tournament.

Well, that's a new one...a team with a losing conference record winning the national title.

Duke had a great overall rating, though (they had underachieved all season), and I have found that when teams get on a roll in this game, they can be hard to stop. They end the season with 10 consecutive wins after entering the ACC Tournament with a 14-15 record.

I don't know...that was a tough one to swallow. It would have been one thing to lose to 2-loss Duquesne or something, but to lose to a 15-loss team?

And then to have a 15-loss team as national champions...

Just crazy to see you fall to Duke with their record, but as you said in the game when teams get rolling they can be hard to stop. I know you came up short of the ultimate goal but great season still.

Yep, and to be honest they are a better rated team than anyone in my conference and one of the best rated teams in the tournament, but to lose a team with their record...man!

But, yeah, any season with a Final Four appearance is a success and it wasn't as if we rolled over everyone all season. We were good, but we lost a number of games so I didn't expect to roll to a national title.

Yeah, it was ridiculous. I gave them too many open looks from three and they never missed.

Yeah, they beat us twice! We just couldn't get it done. Joiner is definitely going to be missed. Dux is a good PG, too, and can penetrate and slash like Joiner can, but he doesn't have the size Joiner has to finish inside. Palmer will be missed, obviously, as well, but I am hoping Willie Gomes can step up his game and fill in there, plus I have some big men I am bringing in next year. Augustin isn't a bad post player, either, he just lacks the size I really like in my big men.

Yeah, it feels weird to say!

I don't think Duke has been particularly successful in my legacy, though. They've only won the ACC regular season title once in the last 10 years (2027-2028) and have won the ACC Tournament only twice (this year and 2021-2022).
