    vs.
Notre Dame (16-8) vs. #2 West Virginia (17-4)
    WVU Coliseum
    Morgantown, WV
    January 29th, 2031

No. 2 West Virginia (17-4, 6-2) lost its second game in its last three attempts as the Mountaineers went down at the buzzer to the visiting Notre Dame Fighting Irish 81-78.

The Fighting Irish (16-8, 6-3) led 81-78 in the waning seconds with the ball, but turned the basketball over with less than two seconds remaining. The Mountaineers inbounded the basketball and got the ball to Myron DeLeon, who had been hot in the closing minutes of the game, and his shot found the nylon with a swish heard all round the coliseum. Unfortunately for him and the Mountaineers, he did not get his shot off in time before the buzzer sounded, and Notre Dame escaped with a three-point victory to snap their own two-game conference losing streak.

Notre Dame led by as many as nine points in the second half. West Virginia held an edge on the glass (36-29) and in turnovers (20-16), but it wasn't enough as the Fighting Irish held the advantage at the free throw line (18-12) and shot a better percentage from the floor (53%-44%).

"We were way too sloppy out there tonight," exclaimed a frustrated West Virginia head coach James Frizzell in a post-game interview. "We were aggressive defensively, perhaps too much so, as we forced a lot of turnovers, but also allowed them some easy baskets. We can't play that out of control if we want to go far in March, or even win the conference this year."

All five Notre Dame starters scored at least 11 points. Sophomore center Brett Goodwin led the way with 15 points and nine rebounds. Freshman forward Wayne Strickland added 11 points and eight rebounds while fellow forward Russ Neale tallied 11 points and five boards. Guard Jordan Porter totaled 12 points and seven assists and senior point guard J.S. Bland scored 14 points, but also turned the basketball over eight times. Altron Hollis also came off the bench to add 12 points for the Fighting Irish.

O.J. Palmer just missed out on a double-double for West Virginia as he totaled 18 points and nine rebounds. Willie Gomes came off the bench to add 18 points and six rebounds while Myron DeLeon ended with 14 points and seven rebounds. Fred Joiner also played well all-around at the point guard position for West Virginia as he totaled 12 points, four rebounds, seven assists, and four steals.

With the loss, the Mountaineers slide into second place in the Big East Conference standings with Villanova slotting into the No. 1 spot with a 7-2 record. The Wildcats handed the Mountaineers their only other conference loss thus far with a 85-69 victory in Morgantown on January 18th. Of note, the Mountaineers are only 3-2 in conference at home this season, but are undefeated with a 3-0 mark on the road. Both of West Virginia's nonconference losses game away from Morgantown.

West Virginia will look to bounce back on Saturday at St. John's. The Red Storm have won five consecutive games and stand at 5-1 in conference play and 12-5 overall.

Yes, our games against Notre Dame do seem to be tough, oftentimes. This team clearly isn't as good as last year's, but I guess we still have a good opportunity to go deep into March or maybe win it all, but I am less confident of that than I was earlier this season.

Thanks, Deuce! It seems I get the urge to return every year around this time.

              vs.
              #2 West Virginia (18-4) vs. St. John's (13-6)
              Carnesecca Arena
              New York, NY
              February 1st, 2031

Senior point guard Fred Joiner scored a career-high-tying 26 points and dished out five assists and freshman forward Myron DeLeon scored a career-high 23 points to go along with four assists and two blocks as No. 2 West Virginia bounced back from a frustrating upset earlier this week against Notre Dame by dismantling a hot St. John's squad on the road 93-59.

St. John's (13-6, 6-2) came into this one having won five games in a row, but you wouldn't know it by the way they played tonight. They only trailed by nine points, 41-32, at halftime, but West Virginia (18-4, 7-2) came out firing in the second half, blitzing their way to 52 points and a 34-point margin of victory.

West Virginia shot 58% (32/55) from the floor collectively and were on fire from three-point range, where they shot 57% (13/23). Myron DeLeon was the leading man from deep as he made six of his nine attempts from beyond the arc, and eight of his 11 shot attempts from the field overall.

Willie Gomes did not attempt a shot from deep, but the seven-footer made his presence felt down low as he banged his way to 17 points, five rebounds, four steals, and three blocks, shooting 8/9 from the floor. Senior center O.J. Palmer also had a fantastic all-around game, despite not scoring much, as he totaled 11 points, nine rebounds, five assists, and four blocks.

The Mountaineers were dominant around the basket on defense, as they blocked nine shots altogether.

B.J. Lamptey was very effective for St. John's in the loss, but his 19 points was not enough without much help from his teammates. Senior Demon Bishop was the only other double-digit scorer for the Red Storm as he added 10 points.

Next up for West Virginia is a trip to Fifth Third Arena in Cincinnati, Ohio, where the Cincinnati Bearcats will host the Mountaineers on Tuesday evening.

That's one way to bounce back from a loss. Hopefully Joiner and DeLeon can keep their good shooting performances going. I wish the game gave you the option to change some of St. John's home games to MSG. I feel like against the #2 team in the nation, they would have done that.

Yeah, that would definitely be nice. It's a bit lackluster playing at Carnesseca Arena in a big matchup like that. Oh well.

You should get back at it, Deuce! The game is definitely dated, though, so I obviously understand not doing so. If it weren't for the momentum I already have built up with this legacy, I'm not sure I'd restart a new legacy at this point, but considering how much time I've put into this one I can't really put it down now.

I've been playing some NCAA Football 14 again lately. I think I am going to have another go at starting up a dynasty thread with that game again soon. I've found some sliders that I seem to be happy with (Hellisan's sliders). I've tried to like Madden 17 on the Xbox One, but I've found it frustrating for some reason...

I have started playing hoops again now that snow is on the ground and I am indoors on my day off, but with only 1 day off not sure I have the time to put up a thread, especially to the quality of some of the ones on here.

I am just praying that someday they can work out their issues with the NCAA and make a college hoops and football game again.

Yep, that would certainly be great, though I don't have my hopes up that it'll happen anytime soon, unfortunately.

No. 2 West Virginia (18-5, 7-3) lost its third game in its last five tries this evening as the Mountaineers fell victim to Cincinnati 77-76.

Cincinnati (13-9, 5-5) led early on and held a 42-35 advantage at halftime. The Mountaineers stormed back in the second half to lead by as many as eight points in the late going, but the Bearcats came back to lead once more and led 77-76 in the closing seconds of regulation. WVU had the ball and an opportunity to score a walkoff go-ahead basket at the buzzer, but Fred Joiner's layup attempt along the baseline was blocked by Christiano Kou, allowing the Bearcats to come away with the huge upset victory.

Kou scored 11 points and grabbed nine rebounds for Cincinnati, but Ervin Nicholas was leading the man as he scored a team-high 24 points for the Bearcats. Tadas Strawberry also added 14 points.

The deciding factor in this game came at the charity stripe. The Mountaineers only attempted 11 free throws tonight while Cincinnati attempted 28. The Mountaineers were very undisciplined defensively as they committed 24 fouls to Cincinnati's 11. Three Mountaineers (Predrag Gabler, Myron DeLeon, and Willie Gomes) fouled out of the game and a fourth (O.J. Palmer) came within a foul of fouling out.

Fred Joiner had a great outing as he scored a career-high 27 points to go along with seven rebounds, four assists, and six steals. Myron DeLeon also added 12 points and was the only other Mountaineer to score more than eight points. Senior center O.J. Palmer had one of the poorest outings of his career as he shot a miserable 2/13 from the field and ended with just six points and 10 rebounds.

Next up for West Virginia is a home game against a talented, but raw Louisville squad. Louisville hasn't lived up to expectations this season, but has the talent to compete against anyone and could easily knock off the Mountaineers with the way WVU has been playing as of late.

Damn another loss, would you account this little slump as you being rusty or do you think it's just the Big East being the Big East?
