Willie Gomes scored 26 points, grabbed 12 rebounds, and blocked four shots as West Virginia (9-6, 2-1) pulled away in the second half to defeat Providence this evening 74-53.

The Friars (8-3, 1-1) trailed by just six points, 38-32, at halftime, but the Mountaineers pulled away behind Gomes' strong second half performance. Gomes came up just one point short of his career-high scoring mark of 27 points.

Theron Dux also added 14 points, four assists, and four steals for the Mountaineers.

The Mountaineers shot just 38% (25/66) from the field and 23% (6/26) from beyond the three-point arc, but the Friars were even worse as they shot just 31% (22/70), including a paltry 15% (3/20) from beyond the arc.

Senior guard Raul Rosario was Providence's only double-digit scorer. He scored 18 points off 7/17 shooting for the Friars.

Next up for West Virginia is a huge matchup against No. 10 Connecticut on Saturday. The Mountaineers will be looking to get back on track after losing their conference-opener to No. 12 Marquette last week and start building momentum towards another conference title.

      #10 Connecticut (13-4) vs. West Virginia (10-6)
      WVU Coliseum
      Morgantown, WV
      January 10th, 2032

West Virginia (10-6, 3-1) won their third-straight game this evening as they defeated No. 10 Connecticut 78-69.

Willie Gomes willed the Mountaineers as he tallied 30 points, 11 rebounds, and four blocks. Tonight was his fourth game in his last five in which he has scored at least 20 points. The Huskies (13-4, 2-2) had no answer for Gomes as he had his way in the post and lit up the net with a 15/19 shooting performance. Gomes' 30-point performance is a new career-high mark for the redshirt sophomore. His previous career-high was 27 points, set in this season's season-opener against St. Bonaventure.

Theron Dux added 12 points for the Mountaineers, and Matt Blanchard came off the bench to score 11 points.

The Mountaineers trailed 39-38 at halftime after the Huskies hit a three-pointer at the buzzer, but West Virginia took the lead early in the second half and led the rest of the way.

Senior forward Tristan Siebrandt scored 19 points and grabbed four rebounds to lead Connecticut in scoring. Fellow senior Tyler Merriex was the team's leading rebounder as he totaled 11 points, eight rebounds, and five steals while Shaun Norris and Kevin Palmer added 10 points apiece.

West Virginia shot 55% (30/55) from the floor tonight while holding the Huskies to 43% (25/58). The Mountaineers also outrebounded the Huskies 29-24.

The Mountaineers have four days off before taking on Notre Dame in South Bend next Wednesday. The Mountaineers do not have any currently ranked AP top 25 teams left on the regular season schedule.

Yeah, we look to finally be playing a bit better. Hopefully, we can keep it up. The schedule is sure about to get a lot easier.

Thanks! I think we should be able to make a pretty good run over the remainder of conference play and hopefully put our disappointing start to the season behind us.

Yeah, I remember that post last night for some reason, haha. In any case, Marquette is pretty good this year. It's hard to believe they were so terrible just a couple years ago!

I'm trying to remember without going back through all the posts. Weren't they starting like 4 freshman? So those 4 playing together for a few years now I bet their chemistry is super high

Yeah, that sounds right. I believe they are playing four seniors now, though I'll have to check (if I remember) next time I fire back up the game.

The Notre Dame Fighting Irish won their fifth game in their last six outings this evening as they outlasted visiting No. 23 West Virginia in overtime 86-77.

The Mountaineers (10-7, 3-2) trailed 73-70 in the waning seconds before Matt Blanchard hit a three-pointer to tie the game with 1.1 seconds remaining. The Irish's ensuing halfcourt heave didn't find the rim, but they took control in overtime. The Mountaineers scored the first basket of the overtime period, but Willie Gomes fouled out and the Fighting Irish closed out the extra period on a 13-2 run to win by nine points.

The Mountaineers have played in three overtime games this season and are 0-3 in those games.

Senior forward Russ Neale led Notre Dame (13-4, 4-1) in scoring and rebounding with 20 points, 10 rebounds, and four steals. Dwayne Carbaugh also scored 20 points while freshman Korey Leslie added 14 points, eight rebounds, and four steals.

West Virginia senior guard Matt Blanchard had a career outing as he scored a career-high 19 points and hit six three-pointers from off the bench. His previous career-high was just 11 points. Willie Gomes had a tough night shooting as he shot just 5/17 from the floor and ended with 12 points and five rebounds. Myron DeLeon added 16 points and four rebounds and Theron Dux paced the offense with 13 points and seven assists.

Notre Dame held a considerable edge at the free throw stripe, where they shot 27/31. In comparison, West Virginia only went 8/12 from the line. The Mountaineers also turned the basketball over 17 times.

West Virginia has six days off before fhosting 3-10 Cincinnati next Thursday.

That is pretty generous to still be ranked in the top 25. Every win this season seems hard earned and the losses have been so close.

It's fun to see San Francisco doing well this year as well!
