Indiana might have something to say about that....

But Welch coming on strong right now. Still in good shape for a deep tourney run.

LOL, yep. Indiana definitely was able to beat this team, so it's quite possible. It's really NCAA Title or bust this year, though. Anything less will frankly be a disappointment, in a way. Notre Dame did a pretty good job at hanging around.

There's still some good teams left to play. Pittsburgh and Marquette are really good and teams like Louisville and UConn, while not having great records, still have some solid talent on their rosters.

This team is most vulnerable against a team with a couple of big low-post players who can slow Welch down and not allow him to get off many shots or collect many rebounds. Couple that with a bad shooting night on my part and this team could quickly get into trouble.

            vs.
            Louisville (11-7) vs. #2 West Virginia (15-1)
            WVU Coliseum
            Morgantown, WV
            January 9th, 2028

There was no doubt who was the better team this afternoon in Morgantown. Louisville (11-7, 1-3) has struggled this season, but there's certainly plenty of talent on their squad. You wouldn't have known it today, however, as the No. 2 team in the country toyed with them in blowout fashion, as West Virginia bested Louisville 90-59 in Morgantown.

The Mountaineers (15-1, 4-0) only led by five points at halftime, but exploded in the second half with a combination of lights-out shooting and stifling defense. On the day, the Mountaineers shot over 50% from the field and hit a startling 16 of their 31 attempts from three-point range. They also outrebounded Louisville 39-23 and held the Cardinals to 35% shooting.

Waitari Trammell was a big reason why WVU shot the ball so effectively. Up until today, the 5'11" junior point guard had never scored more than 20 points in a game and was in a real battle for minutes with freshman phenom Fred Joiner. Today, Trammell showed that he has real talent, too, as he drained seven three-pointers in eight attempts and scored a career-high 25 points to lead the Mountaineers in scoring. He also grabbed eight boards.

"It was like I couldn't miss," remarked Trammell after the game, with a smile on his face in front of the cameras. "I've always been a solid shooter, but never a great one. Tonight, something clicked. Those shots are always there, but usually I don't take them and they don't go in. Tonight, they did."

Leandro Summers added 14 points, six rebounds, three assists, and three steals while Tre Welch had yet another solid game with 10 points, six rebounds, and three steals. Fred Joiner came off the bench to pour in 10 points and five assists while Olson Palmer scored a career-high 11 points and also grabbed three boards in just 15 minutes from off the bench.

Mamadou Stapley led the Cardinals with 14 points and three rebounds. Dee Granger added 10 points, four steals, and three blocks.

West Virginia hosts Georgetown next Thursday, but will play rival No. 4 Pittsburgh in a week in Pittsburgh in the annual "Backyard Brawl".

It was tougher than it was expected to be, but No. 2 West Virginia (16-1, 5-0) pulled away in the second half this evening to defeat lowly Georgetown (6-11, 1-4), 94-76. The Mountaineers only led 39-37 at halftime, perhaps having been caught looking ahead to Saturday's rivalry game against No. 5 Pittsburgh.

Georgetown had a pair of scorers which kept them in the game. Senior shooting guard Benny Washington led the way with a career-high 26 points, three rebounds, and three assists. Seven-foot freshman center Pearce Morrissette also had a career outing as he scored a career-high 21 points to go along with eight rebounds.

Fred Joiner led WVU with 22 points and four assists. Deno Woodards made it to the free throw line early and often and ended with 21 points and six boards while Tre Welch had another solid game, totaling 15 points and seven rebounds. Leandro Summers added 11 points and three rebounds.

WVU will face fifth-ranked Pittsburgh on the road next in the annual "Backyard Brawl", which will pit the Big East's top two teams against one another.

It was the biggest regular season game of the year for both teams. It was the Backyard Brawl and it lived up to expectations.

It was one of the biggest Backyard Brawls in recent memory as No. 2 West Virginia (17-1, 6-0) came into No. 5 Pittsburgh (14-5, 4-2) looking to keep its undefeated conference record intact. However, for the majority of the second half, it looked as if Pittsburgh would pull off the upset as slight underdogs.

The Panthers led by as many as nine points in the second half and led all the way until the final minute. The Mountaineers took the lead after a pair of free throws by Waitari Trammell and led by as many as four points in the final minute. However, Trammell missed the second of a one-and-one with under 10 seconds remaining, giving the Panthers a chance to tie the game with a two or win it with a three on the final possession of the game.

The Panthers called junior guard Christopher Collucci's name. Collucci had delivered with 24 points, three rebounds, and five boards. He was on a hot streak late in the game and he seemed primed to make a play to win the game. However, his three-point attempt a time expired bounced off the back of the iron, giving the Mountaineers the slim 76-74 victory and propelling them to 6-0 in Big East Conference play.

Senior forward Elmer Cleaves added 14 points and nine boards for Pittsburgh while Taurean Chan ended with 14 points and three assists.

"This is a great win for us," beamed Coach Frizzell after the game's conclusion. "It wasn't easy, but Pittsburgh is a great team. We love to hate each other, but Coach [Jamie] Dixon has a great squad this year and they will be a force to be reckoned with in March. Maybe we'll meet again in the Big East Tournament."

West Virginia was led by Tre Welch with 20 points, seven rebounds, and three assists. Waitari Trammell added 20 points, three rebounds, and three assists while Fred Joiner came off the bench to hit three three-pointers and tally 12 points and three boards.

WVU's starting small forward Deno Woodards was sidelined with an unspecified injury in the second half of tonight's game, but is not expected to miss any time going forward.

West Virginia now has five days off before hosting St. John's next weekend.

Just to add to what I posted previously about this, I also should add that I use an "energy fatigue rate" of 53. I play 20 minute halves and I think it gives fairly realistic MPG numbers. Truthfully, in college some of the elite players play close to 40 MPG in the big games, so maybe my players play too few minutes, but I'm okay with it.

Yeah, I'm not sure what the optimal substitution setting really is. You might be able to go lower; I'm not really sure. I don't usually find my guys to be much less effective when they're in their 80s.

EDIT: I forgot that I made a thread over in the CH 2K8 subforum last year about this subject:

                          http://www.operationsports.com/forum...ubstitute.html

It sounds like 80 is a pretty popular energy level for substitution.

Too add to this, I typically substitute the player back when he's at 100 (or maybe in the mid-90s if it's late in the half). What I try to do is to substitute my players out in the middle of the half so I have mostly backups playing at the mid-point of the half. I don't usually stagger my substitutions, though I've done more of it this year with Fred Joiner's emergence as a sixth-man and some of my lack of depth at guard (Joiner gets a lot of minutes at both PG and SG).

No. 2 West Virginia (18-1, 7-0) easily cruised past unranked St. John's (9-11, 1-6) this afternoon 85-69 behind a strong effort shooting the basketball from deep. The Mountaineers made 16 of their 31 attempts from three-point range this afternoon and scored 48 points in the first half to seize an insurmountable lead. Coach Frizzell emptied the bench for much of the second half as the Mountaineers held on to win by 16 points over the overmatched Red Storm.

Leandro Summers was WVU's leading scorer as he hit four three-pointers and posted a nice, all-around stat line, recording 14 points, four rebounds, three assists, three steals, and two blocks. Tre Welch added 12 points and 11 rebounds while Waitari Trammell ended with 12 points and five assists. Fred Joiner came off the bench to add 11 points, four boards, and five assists.

The Red Storm were led by freshman guard B.J. Lamptey, who scored a career-high 19 points and also grabbed three boards and tallied three steals. Lanny Hawkins totaled 13 points and four boards while Nik House ended with a double-double, accounting for 10 points and 10 boards.

West Virginia will host Cincinnati next Wednesday.
