No. 3 West Virginia (9-1) played very well tonight as the Mountaineers defeated a tough Arkansas (10-2) squad 80-64 on the road at Bud Walton Arena in Fayetteville, AR.

Tre Welch was fantastic. The 7'0" senior had the game of his life as he poured in a career-high 35 points on 16-for-21 shooting to go along with 10 rebounds. It seemed that for large portions of the game he simply could not miss as he scored at ease over the Arkansas defenders.

Fred Joiner also had a great game as he hit six of his seven shot attempts for 14 points. Deno Woodards also hit a pair of threes and ended with 10 points and five rebounds.

Howie Gutierrez led Arkansas with a team-high 22 points. Sophomore guard Clark Vargas added 14 points and three assists from off the bench.

The Mountaineers shot 56% from the floor in the game and outrebounded the Razorbacks 34-24.

West Virginia will travel to Tulane to take on the Green Wave on Saturday.

Nice pair of wins. That second against Hartford, man. I'm sure Welch's presence has just as much an effect on defense as it does on offense. Hopefully WVU can keep the strong playing going.

What is your substitution pattern? and how tired does your guy get when playing 34 minutes. for some reason ive always subbed when they get to 90% but im thinking about a change if i dont that kinda depth

Yeah, Welch is great defensively. Having a seven-footer that can shut down the paint is a huge help. Given the way I play offense in this game, I've always loved having at least one seven-footer (or close to it) on my teams. I've pretty much had one ever since I recruited Cassiand Swift many, many years back at Princeton. Having two seven-footers is even better!

My offense involves a lot of backing down by Welch (or whoever else) and him either getting off a hook shot (or whatever) or kicking it out to open shooters when they're open.

I tend to take out guys when they get into the lower 80s. Sometimes, they get into the upper 70s, but I really try to avoid letting them fall below 80. Welch has good stamina, so he's able to play longer than most. You can also try to maximize their minutes through timeouts and such. In addition, when your team goes on runs at home, the momentum gives them a bit of a fatigue boost, which sometimes helps them play more minutes than usual.

My depth is really lacking this season, so I've been forced to play my starters more minutes than in past seasons. I'm not sure what's up, but Peterson and Dux seem to have forgotten how to shoot the basketball this year. My only dependable backup guard is Fred Joiner and he's basically a de facto starter.

Olson and Palmer are nice, though. At least I have some depth at PF and C.

Deno Woodards has pleasing this year at SF, too, after Montgomery decided to turn pro. It still kind of sucks Montgomery went pro, though, as I would have had much better depth as I could slot Woodards or Montgomery into SG when needed.

Still, this is a damn good team and maybe the best I've ever had. A National Title is certainly the goal. It would be nice to win one convincingly. My only national title so far in this legacy came with my team having nine losses and was as much of a cinderella run as anything, so it would be nice to win one as a #1 seed!

No. 3 West Virginia (10-1) came out and delivered an offensive performance for the ages as the Mountaineers shot 56%, drilled 13 three-pointers, and only committed three turnovers en route to a 113-63 romping of the hosting Tulane Green Wave (4-8).

Tre Welch poured in his second consecutive 30-point game as he tallied 31 points, 13 rebounds, and two blocks. Meanwhile, freshman sixth-man Fred Joiner had another fantastic game, tallying a double-double with 21 points, three rebounds, 11 assists, and three steals. Joiner was also extremely efficient shooting the basketball, as he made seven of his eight field goal attempts and converted all six of his free throw attempts. Deno Woodards hit four threes and tallied 15 points and five boards while Nile Stevenson added 11 points and five rebounds. Waitari Trammell was close to a double-double as he paced the offense with 10 points, three rebounds, eight assists, and three steals while Leandro Summers drilled a trio of treys to end with 10 points.

Felton Beatty led Tulane with 14 points and three assists. Trace Schneiderman added 11 points while Dodie McElroy came off the bench to contribute 10 points.

The Mountaineers have a week off before taking on Marshall in Huntington on Christmas Day. It will be the Mountaineers' final non-conference regular season game.

Yeah, it was surprising to romp them like that. You just never know. Sometimes, you can blow out good teams and sometimes you can struggle with bad teams. The unpredictability is part of what still makes this game great.
