    Big East Tournament - Quarterfinals
    March 9th, 2028

Top-seeded West Virginia (30-1) won its 30th game of the season this afternoon in the Big East Tournament Quarterfinals at Madison Square Garden as the Mountaineers topped the Connecticut Huskies 72-60.

Connecticut (19-13) kept the game within striking distance for the most part, but the Mountaineers did well to maintain a general eight to 20-point lead throughout. The Huskies cut the lead to seven points in the final minutes of the game, but the Mountaineers put it away with free throws late.

Nile Stevenson scored a game- and career-high 21 points and grabbed nine boards to lead the Mountaineers in scoring. Tre Welch tallied 12 points and eight rebounds while Waitari Trammell totaled 14 points, three rebounds, four assists, and three steals. Fellow guard Fred Joiner aded 11 points from off the bench.

Lyle Dunnington scored a team-high 19 points and dished out four assists for Connecticut. Sophomore point guard Maris Archibald was the only other UConn player to score in double-figures as he ended with 13 points and three assists.

Fourth-seeded Marquette knocked off Providence 102-75 today, and the Golden Eagles will face off against West Virginia in the Big East Tournament Quarterfinals tomorrow evening.

            Big East Tournament Semifinals

Top-seeded West Virginia (30-2) has gone down! After going undefeated in Big East Conference play, the Mountaineers bowed out in the Big East Tournament Semifinals this evening against Marquette (30-2), 88-85. The Golden Eagles led from start to finish in this one, leading by as many as 13 points in the second half.

West Virginia came back to make it close at the end and had a chance to tie it at the end of regulation. However, the Golden Eagles tipped the in-bounds pass from Nile Stevenson with 2.1 seconds left and the Mountaineers were unable to get a shot off before time expired.

"It was rough for us," commented WVU head coach James Frizzell. "[Marquette] came out and wanted it more. They're a great team and nearly knocked us off earlier this season when we played at their place, so it wasn't a surprise they gave us another rough game. We'll get over it and regroup for the NCAA Tournament."

Dominick Gary led Marquette in scoring with 19 points, three rebounds, and three assists. Todor Parham added 14 points, four assists, and four steals while Len Nengsu tallied 14 points and six assists. Cedric Nichols tallied 13 points, six boards, and three steals and Barry Adkins came off the bench to total 15 points, three boards, and two blocks.

Tre Welch led WVU with 21 points and eight rebounds. Nile Stevenson tallied 17 points, five rebounds, and three assists while Waitari Trammell added 18 points, four assists, and four steals. Fred Joiner also added 10 points and four assists from off the bench.

The Mountaineers will regroup and prepare for the NCAA Tournament while Marquette will advance to the Big East Championship Game tomorrow evening. They will face off against the #2-seeded Pittsburgh Panthers.

That's one hell of a resume. It's a safe bet you are the overall number 1 heading into the tournament. Go win us a title!

You might be surprised. Duke actually led me in RPI all year long, and I am still #2 as I write this. That being said, as you'll see in a minute, I did get the #1 overall seed.

Yes.... I really didn't see that one coming. Then again, Marquette has a lot of size, and when a team can match up or exceed my size in the low post, it definitely means I'm a lot more vulnerable. In addition, Marquette just had a great shooting night. Not much you can do about that sometimes.

On the other hand, you have teams like Villanova, who do not have much size (IIRC, their center was 6'7"). They pretty much have no chance against a team like I have.

The #1-overall seeded West Virginia Mountaineers (31-2) easily cruised back Gardner-Webb (16-17) this afternoon 76-54, advancing to the second round of the NCAA Tournament.

It was expected to be a cupcake game for the Mountaineers, and it worked out that way. Tre Welch led WVU with 18 points and seven rebounds. Nile Stevenson added 13 points, six rebounds, and three steals while Fred Joiner came off the bench to score 15 points. Waitari Trammell also added 11 points, three assists, and three steals.

Lester Logan led Gardner-Webb with 16 points and three rebounds. Domineek Campbell came off the bench to add 12 points and three steals.

The Mountaineers will face off against #9-seeded Missouri in two days. Missouri topped #8-seeded Auburn 77-72 earlier today. The winner will advance to the Sweet Sixteen.
