    #18 West Virginia (21-8) vs. Syracuse (16-14)
    Carrier Dome
    Syracuse, NY
    February 29th, 2024

On a day that only comes around once every four years, the 18th-ranked West Virginia Mountaineers went into the Carrier Dome and did what they do best: beat Syracuse. Coach Frizzell has never lost to Syracuse as head coach at WVU and today was no different as the Mountaineers pasted the Orange 82-67 after a particularly strong showing in the second half.

Simon Traore did all he could to will Syracuse to victory. The 6'8" senior guard out of Charleston, WV scored 29 points and totaled four assists on an 11-for-24 shooting night, but his tremendous individual effort proved to not be nearly enough. Linas O'Neil was the only other Syracuse player who scored more than seven points as he ended with 10 points and three rebounds.

Osei Forney led WVU with 19 points, seven rebounds, three assists, and a pair of blocks. Daryan Fitzwater added 16 points and four rebounds while Randall Norton pitched in an addition 13 points, including three treys. Fitzwater's 16 points is a new career-high for the senior small forward.

West Virginia will hit the road this weekend as the Mountaineers will travel to UConn on Sunday.

Way to dominate Syracuse in that one, nice win. Hope WVU can finish out strong.

Thanks! We're looking at around a #4-6 seed in the tournament right now.

          #18 West Virginia (22-8) vs. Connecticut (15-13)

          March 3rd, 2024

No. 18 West Virginia won its third game in a row this afternoon as the Mountaineers rode out a late UConn run to defeat the Huskies 67-61 on the road.

Osei Forney led the Mountaineers with 18 points, eight rebounds, and three blocks. Barry George added 11 points, three assists, and three steals while Daryan Fitzwater recorded 10 points, six rebounds, and three steals. Len Shields did not have a great day offensively, shooting only one-for-six from the field, but the 7'0" power forward grabbed a career-high 16 rebounds this afternoon.

Collectively, the Mountaineers had one of the best rebounding days of the season as WVU brought down 43 rebounds as a team. This helped to smooth over WVU's struggles shooting the basketball from both the field and from the free throw line. The Mountaineers shot 17-for-27 from the free throw line, but only made two of their last six from the charity stripe.

Chauncey Gogerty and Buzz Larson led the Huskies from off the bench with nine points apiece.

West Virginia will host a hot Notre Dame squad on Wednesday, March 6th, at Senior Night. WVU's final regular season game will be played at Marquette on the 9th. The Golden Eagles are 16-0 in conference play.

Find it a little hard to believe that you're only ranked #18 -- you've been coming on strong late in the season. Hopefully you can keep the run going.

Yeah, after a rough start to conference play, we seem to have it going now. Of course, our opponents, as of late, have been less than stellar, too.

                      Morgantown, WV
                      March 6th, 2024

Notre Dame came into this one having won six of their last seven games. No. 17 West Virginia came in having won nine of their last 10 games. This was sure to be a good one.

While it wasn't exactly a "bad one", it was far from a classic, either, as Notre Dame took control early and never relinquished their lead as they slashed WVU's three-game winning streak this evening with an 81-69 win on Senior Day in Morgantown.

"It is disappointing to see our seniors go out like this," said Coach Frizzell after the game, "but you have to give credit to Notre Dame. They played hard and just beat us up and down the court all game long. There was no question that they deserved to win this game more than us."

Cornelius Bracy led Notre Dame with 16 points, four rebounds, and four assists. Dennis Siebrandt tallied a double-double with 14 points and 11 rebounds while fellow forward Taquan Wisniewski added 12 points, six rebounds, and two blocks.

Barry George led WVU with a game-high 17 points and seven assists. Osei Forney and Len Shields tallied double-doubles with Forney scoring 16 points and grabbing 10 rebounds while Shields ended with 12 points, 12 rebounds, and a pair of blocks.

With the victory, Notre Dame may begin to be mentioned among at-large candidates for the NCAA Tournament as their conference record improves to 10-7 and they are assured of finishing above .500 in the Big East this season. Unfortunately for them, their RPI will be a limiting factor as their RPI stands in the low 70s right now, even after this win.

The Mountaineers, meanwhile, are almost assured of a spot in the Big Dance. The only question is what seeding they will get. Their game against No. 2 Marquette on Sunday will be a major determining factor in that. Marquette had been 16-0 in conference play up until this evening as the Cincinnati Bearcats picked up a home victory over the Golden Eagles 70-66 to notch a statement win of their own as they attempt to qualify for the NCAA Tournament.

No. 17 West Virginia bounced back from a loss earlier this week to beat No. 2 Marquette 87-72 this afternoon in Milwaukee, handing the Golden Eagles their second consecutive loss to end the regular season.

Marquette had been 16-0 in Big East Conference action until Wednesday, when Marquette went down to Cincinnati 70-66. Marquette's struggles were compounded tonight as the Golden Eagle simply got dominated in the second half.

Marquette played well in the first half, taking a 44-39 at halftime. However, the Mountaineers asserted themselves in the second half, outscoring Marquette 48-28.

"We began to play better offensively and defensively in the second half," commented Coach Frizzell. "It was an all-around great effort against a great team. This will be a great boost as we head into the conference tournament next week."

West Virginia shot 52% from the field and 60% from downtown. WVU also shot 23-for-24 from the free throw line.

Osei Forney led WVU with 19 points, five rebounds, three assists, and two blocks. Barry George added 17 points and seven assists while Daryan Fitzwater had a solid game, scoring 15 points.

Arvydas Jack scored a game-high 21 points and four assists to lead the Golden Eagles. Demon Ridnour added 11 points and six boards.

Both teams will now await the conference tournament next week. Both Marquette and West Virginia will get byes in the first round of the Big East Tournament as Marquette finishes first in conference play while WVU will end up third. WVU's 12-6 conference record this season is the Mountaineers' best mark in conference play under Coach Frizzell. In his previous four seasons, the Mountaineers finished 11-7 in conference play each time.
