James Madison (3-3) vs. West Virginia (7-1)
    WVU Coliseum
    Morgantown, WV
    November 28th, 2023

West Virginia won its fifth consecutive game this evening as the Mountaineers escaped James Madison's upset bid 79-78.

Darian Pulley nearly willed the Dukes to a victory with a tremendous individual effort. The 6'5" junior guard made 10 of his 13 shot attempts en route to 28 points and four steals. Unfortunately, for the Dukes, Pulley's effort was not enough.

James Madison had a chance to win it in the closing seconds after an Osei Forney basket gave the Mountaineers a one-point lead with 34 seconds remaining. James Madison was looking to get the ball to Pulley, but the WVU defense denied him the ball and forced someone else to attempt the last-second heroics.

As it turned out, Hollis Lindsey attempted James Madison's last shot, but it clanked off the back iron. Lindsey had a solid outing, totaling 12 points and 10 boards, but he missed the shot when it mattered most.

Osei Forney notched yet another double-double for the Mountaineers with 19 points, 15 rebounds, three assists, and three blocks. Daryan Fitzwater added 14 points and four boards.

West Virginia will host rival Virginia Tech on December 1st in what ought to be a good one. The Mountaineers blew out Virginia Tech last year, but it is expected that this year's matchup will be much more closely contested.

Virginia Tech (2-4) vs. West Virginia (8-1)

No one expected Len Shields, who coming into this game had only averaged four points and five rebounds per game in 11 minutes, to be the star of the game. However, Shields was inserted into the starting lineup by Coach Frizzell, replacing Arden Mann, who had started at power forward during West Virginia's first eight games. Mann's production had been lacking, particularly offensively, where he was only shooting 38% from the floor.

Shields was expected to rebound well and give West Virginia second-chance opportunities. He did that and much more as he filled up the stat sheet, recording 16 points and 15 rebounds this evening against the Virginia Tech Hokies in the Mountaineers' 83-77 home victory. Both were career-highs for the sophomore power forward.

"It was something I struggled with because Arden [Mann] gives us quality minutes, but I just couldn't let a seven-footer with raw talent ride the pine on the bench any longer," explained Coach Frizzell. "Arden still got plenty of playing time and deserves it, but Len [Shields] gives us something that we did not have before."

Even with another seven-footer clogging up the lane, senior center Osei Forney did not disappoint as he totaled 20 points, five rebounds, three assists, and two blocks. His rebounding numbers were down a bit, which isn't surprising considering Shields racked up 15 single-handily, but he still hit eight of his 14 shot attempts and sank all four free throws he attempted.

In total, the Mountaineers were dominant on the glass. The Mountaineers out-rebounded Virginia Tech 38-24. This allowed the Mountaineers to get off 71 shot attempts compared to the Hokies' 57.

Marco Hargett of Virginia Tech had a career-game of his own as he notched a career-high 17 points coming off the bench. 6'8" junior center Cesar North also added 16 points and six boards.

West Virginia now begins the final stretch of their non-conference schedule and it is a gauntlet. First, the Mountaineers travel to Clemson, SC where they will face off against the 11th-ranked Tigers. Then, later next week, the Mountaineers will travel to Los Angeles to face off against a top five ranked UCLA squad. On December 23rd, West Virginia will face off against a solid Gonzaga squad. WVU's final non-conference game (aside from the Marshall game in mid-January) before beginning the Big East portion of their schedule will be at home against #3 Ohio State. We also must add that WVU's second conference game will be at home against #1 Pittsburgh on January 6th.

"It will be a hell of a test, but we're eager and ready," beamed Coach Frizzell, when asked about the difficulties his team faces in the next month. "It's time to see what we're made of."

A little surprised you're not ranked, but I guess it's just a matter of how your schedule has broken so far.

Win out the next week and they'll have no choice though.

              Indeed!

By the way, how many of us on here are from North Carolina? It seems like almost everyone that posts CH2k8 legacies are (with the exception of Coach Knight and some others)!

The Clemson Tigers bounced back from a one-point loss sustained against Michigan State on November 28th to trounce the visiting West Virginia Mountaineers this evening 87-66.

Led by Olu Bazin's 22 points and four rebounds, the Tigers completely dominated in the second half, outscoring the Mountaineers 43-28 in the second frame of play after a tightly contested first half.

Clemson shot 53% from the field and knocked down 10 of their 23 three point attempts as the Tigers' offense was clicking on all cylinders for the duration of the game.

West Virginia managed to keep pace in the first half with their own offensive firepower, but Clemson's raw talent won out in the second half as the WVU offense sputtered to only 28 points.

In addition to Bazin's performance, Clemson's Petie Deane came off the bench to notch a career-high 18 points and three rebounds.

West Virginia was led by Osei Forney, who totaled 16 points, 11 rebounds, three assists, and three blocks. In his second game as a starter, Len Shields continued to impress, tallying 11 points and seven boards in the 21-point loss.

The road gets no easier for West Virginia as they will travel to Los Angeles for a game against #12 UCLA on Saturday as they attempt to bounce back from their setback this evening.

Ouch that's a rough loss to Clemson.

And I live in Tennessee if that matters... Maybe we should have an OS Gathering like mentioned in the Neighborhood if a lot of guys live in North Carolina area haha (sorta kinda maybe not really joking...)

Littlejohn Coliseum is a pretty tough place to play. I always struggle there, even back in the old days when I'd roll with UNC and played on the lower difficulties. Clemson always played well against me in that place. Tough loss, but nothing you can't bounce back from.

And yeah, I live near Fayetteville, NC for the summer when I'm not in Chapel Hill during the school year.

Tough loss to Clemson, they definitely had the hot hand in the that one.

As for me, I was born and raised in New York City but I moved down to Charlotte with my family about five years ago.

We seem to have a lot of OSers that live in North Carolina, in general.

I'm in Raleigh most of the year, as well, although if I transfer to UNCG to switch to B.S. Economics this fall, I will be full-time in the Triad again (High Point at home and Greensboro at school).

Ah, another North Carolina Yankee! We have a lot of those!

I was born and raised in Greensboro, North Carolina until I was 11, when I moved to West Virginia until I was 14, and moved back in June 2007. My dad is from Charleston, WV and my mother is from Miami, FL (though she went to high school here). My dad had moved here to work out of Greensboro for Piedmont Airlines (he works out of Charlotte for US Airways now since Piedmont was bought by US Air in 1989).

I'll out myself and add that I went to UNCG for undergrad and Wake Forest for law school (and trust me, a lot of people turned their nose at me when I said I went to UNCG (mainly b/c it's a state school) -- or got confused because they thought I was talking about UNC-Chapel Hill).

Living situation is up in the air due to work situation being up in the air -- but I'll just say that for now I am living in North Carolina. I grew up in Charlotte, but I'll never go back.

Oh wait, this is a basketball thread, right? Rooted for the Wolfpack as long as I can remember. I wasn't around for the glory/NC years though.

Ah, good to know. UNCG isn't the best of schools, but my understanding is that the business school is pretty solid (not as good as UNC, obviously, but they don't even have B.S. Economics at UNC - they only have the B.A.) and the school is generally one of those schools where you are said to get more "bang for your buck" (NC State is, too). UNCG would certainly be a lot cheaper than NCSU, especially since I'd be living at home (I live ~15 minutes from campus, so I just can't justify the cost of living on campus or in an apartment).

Yes, I do believe this is a basketball thread, but this isn't the first time this thread has gone off-topic in its five years of existence.

West Virginia dropped its second straight game by a 21-point margin this afternoon as the 12th-ranked UCLA Bruins defeated the Mountaineers 79-58.

As in West Virginia's last game against Clemson, the Mountaineers kept pace early and only trailed 35-32 at the halftime break. Unfortunately for the Mountaineers, they wore down in the second half and simply could not keep up as the Bruins outscored the Mountaineers 44-26 in the final frame en route to the 79-58 victory.

UCLA owned a 38-26 advantage on the glass and shot 22-28 from the free throw line while WVU only managed 8-11.

Jay Padgett led UCLA with 14 points, five rebounds, and three assists. Manourou McCarthy totaled 13 points, nine rebounds, three assists, and three steals while Jerel Monserez came off the bench to add 13 points and four boards.

Osei Forney scored a game-high 15 points to go along with seven rebounds, three assists, three steals, and a pair of blocks while Randall Norton added 10 points.

West Virginia now had two weeks off before hosting the Gonzaga Bulldogs on December 23rd, two days before Christmas.
