Ohio (5-5) vs. West Virginia (6-2)
Stan Sheriff Center
Honolulu, HI
December 15th, 2022
Free throws can be the difference between winning and losing a game. That saying was never more true tonight as the West Virginia Mountaineers (6-2) outscored the Ohio Bobcats (5-5) 25-1 at the free throw line in their 78-46 victory in the first round of the Hawaiian Island Classic.
The Mountaineers' 32-point win comes after dropping two straight games against Duke and Manhattan.
"This was huge for us as we definitely stymied the momentum that had been building against us after our last two games," explained Coach Frizzell. "Now that we have the two-game losing streak behind us, it's time for us to get going and win the Hawaiian Island Classic!"
Osei Forney led the Mountaineers with 13 points and 10 rebounds. Damian French chipped in 11 points and five boards while Allan Pena recorded 12 points and four assists.
Carl Coulter was the only major contributor for Ohio. Coulter scored a team-high 12 points. No other Bobcat scored more than six points.
WVU will take on Hawaii in the semifinals tomorrow evening as the Mountaineers look to defend their Hawaiian Island Classic Title from 2021.

It wasn't pretty, but No. 20 West Virginia (10-2) got an early Christmas Present on the eve of the holiday as the Mountaineers outlasted the North Carolina State Wolfpack (10-3) 59-45 to win the Casual Apparel Holiday Festival.
"This is a huge for us," said Coach Frizzell, whose team has now won five consecutive games. "We went through a rough patch against Duke and Manhattan, but I think it's clear now that we're over that."
The Mountaineers have now won two in-season tournaments during the past two weeks.
The Mountaineers were led by a powerful performance by Osei Forney, who tallied his third-straight double-double with 19 points and 10 rebounds.
The Wolfpack were led by junior forward Luis Vegas, who cored a team-high 14 points and grabbed seven boards. Point guard Carlton Lockller also added 11 points.
West Virginia's next game will be at South Florida as the Mountaineers open up Big East Conference play for the 2022-2023 season.

#17 West Virginia (10-3) vs. South Florida (10-3)
USF Sun Dome
Tampa, FL
December 28th, 2022
No. 17 West Virginia (10-3, 0-1 Big East) opened up Big East Conference play this evening as the Mountaineers traveled to Tampa, FL to take on the South Florida Bulls (10-3, 1-0 Big East). USF was a tough opponent and it showed.
It was a back-and-forth game. The Bulls held a halftime advantage, but WVU came back in the second half to tie the game 69-69 as regulation ended, sending the game to overtime. The Bulls, led by J. McCurry's 22 points, dominated the extra period, outscoring the Mountaineers 21-11 en route to a 90-80 overtime victory.
Jamual Bell tallied 19 points, three rebounds, and five assists. Smackey Beacham also had a fine game, tallying 18 points, four rebounds, and four assists.
Osei Forney did all he could to will the Mountaineers to victory, scoring a career-high 29 points to go along with eight boards, but it was not enough to counter USF's proficiency on offense. Barry George was the only other WVU player to put up notable numbers as he added 19 points off six-for-12 shooting.
The Mountaineers will host St. John's on Saturday in the Mountaineers' conference home-opener.
