    Morgantown, WV

The West Virginia Mountaineers (20-5, 8-5 Big East) ran into a buzzsaw this evening in the form of the Connecticut Huskies (17-7, 6-6 Big East). The Huskies, hungry for a win to boost their NCAA Tournament prospects, controlled the game against No. 7 West Virginia and notched a huge road win on their resume as they upset the Mountaineers by a final score of 74-65.

The Mountaineers were troubled with shooting woes for most of the game, though they did end shooting a respectable 40% from the floor. However, WVU missed its first 17 three-point attempts before Allan Pena and Osei Forney hit one each in garbage time in the closing minutes. The Mountaineers, who shoot average shooting 35% from beyond the arc this season, finished shooting an abysmal two-for-19 from downtown.

The Huskies were led by Lelan Sims, who came off the bench to deliver a team-high 16 points and three steals. Solomon Collum totaled 15 points, three rebounds, and five steals while Ryann Sutton added 12 points and a trio of steals.

WVU was led by Allan Pena's performance. Pena shot seven-for-11 from the field en route to 18 points, three rebounds, and three steals. Osei Forney and Marquel Proffitt each scored 13 points and grabbed five boards. Proffitt also added four steals.

The Mountaineers will look to bounce back next Wednesday on the road against a struggling DePaul team.

Somewhat. Henderson and George are usually pretty solid coming off the bench and they just sucked that night, only shooting 1-for-12. It happens, I guess.

Yes, unfortunately. We don't really have any scorers that come off the bench other than George and Henderson, so when they're off, our bench probably isn't going to do much.

No. 5 West Virginia (21-5, 9-5 Big East) dominated the DePaul Blue Demons (10-15, 1-13 Big East) this Wednesday evening 78-48 behind a strong defensive effort.

The Mountaineers held DePaul to just 27% shooting and five-for-20 from downtown. DePaul did rack up some points at the foul line, however, as they would hit 15 of their 21 free throw attempts.

In comparison, WVU would shoot 54% and hit nine of their 21 three-point attempts.

Justino Whitworth led all teams in scoring with 17 points off of six-for-nine shooting. Jorge Henderson was the only other player to reach double-figures as he came off the bench to add 12 points. No DePaul player reached double-figures in any statistical category.

WVU will take on #23 Villanova in Morgantown on Saturday.

Indeed. Thanks, guys, although DePaul is atrocious, so we better not get too high on ourselves after that one.

No. 5 West Virginia (22-5, 10-5 Big East) rose to the challenge this afternoon against No. 23 Villanova (17-10, 8-7 Big east) as the Mountaineers defeated the Wildcats 73-65.

Four of WVU's starters scored more than 10 points with Raynardo Admundson and Allan Pena leading the way with 14 apiece. Osei Forney also recorded 11 points and seven rebounds while Justino Whitworth added 10 points.

The Mountaineers won this game at the charity stripe, where WVU shot 38 foul shots. Perhaps more impressively, the Mountaineers made 31 of their 38 free throw attempts, a success rate of 82%. In comparison, Villanova only made 11 trips to the free throw line and hit seven of them.

"We've always had a very good free throw shooting team," said Coach Frizzell, "so the 82% statistic isn't so surprising to me. However, the fact that we shot 38 free throws is what is both surprising and impressive. We generally have a tendency to get comfortable firing up jump shots from beyond the arc, but we didn't fall into that trap tonight."

WVU converted four of their 11 shots from beyond the arc.

Villanova was led by Errick Daniel, who led all scorers with 16 points. Shooting guard Ismail Laudato also had a nice outing with 15 points and three rebounds.

West Virginia will face off against No. 10 Marquette next Monday on the road in what will figure to be a pivotal matchup as far as the Big East Conference Standings are concerned.

Halfway through the first half of action, No. 4 West Virginia was cruising. The Mountaineers (22-6, 10-6 Big East) had used an early 16-0 run to build a substantial lead over the Big East-leading Marquette Golden Eagles on Monday evening. However, No. 13 Marquette (21-6, 12-3 Big East), which has proven itself to be an offensive juggernaut this year, went on a huge run near the end of the half to cut the lead to 36-30 at the halftime break.

The Mountaineers would continue to lead for much of the second half, however, until a late run by Marquette put the Golden Eagles ahead 59-56 in the final minutes. The Mountaineers needed a clutch shot to tie it and Justin Whitworth delivered that as he drilled a three-pointer to tie the game at 59 apiece.

With time running down, the Golden Eagles had the ball with the game tied at 63 apiece. Domnik Tobias had been dominating all night long to the tune of 20 points and three assists, yet he was not the one that took the final shot for Marquette. That honor belonged to junior small forward Bryan McCurry, who in 27 minutes of action had only accumulated seven points, four rebounds, and three assists. He had only hit two of his eight shot attempts, but he stepped up when it mattered as he hit an 18-footer to give his team a 65-63 lead with 4.5 seconds left.

WVU would get the ball back, but in the hustle to get the ball down the court, Justino Whitworth threw an errant pass that was picked off, giving the Marquette Golden Eagles a huge 65-63 lead to all but clinch a #1 seed for themselves in the upcoming Big East Tournament.

In addition to Tobias' performance, freshman Ray Herman also performed admirably for the Golden Eagles, accumulating 11 points, five rebounds, three steals, and three blocks. Senior guard Stephan Manning was also impressive as he recorded 10 points, seven rebounds, seven assists, and three steals.

Justino Whitworth led the Mountaineers in scoring with 16 points and three rebounds. Osei Forney totaled 14 points, seven rebounds, and three steals while Marquel Proffitt ended with 14 points and four rebounds. Allan Proffitt was the only other Mountaineer to reach double-figures as he scored 10 points to go along with four boards.

Interestingly, outside of Damian French's seven points, the WVU bench was completely scoreless.

The Mountaineers will look to bounce back later this week against the Cincinnati Bearcats. Next week the Mountaineers will play their final two regular season games against Mercer and Georgetown. The Mountaineers should be heavy favorites in each of their final three regular season games.

Agreed. 11 teams right now could make a hard case for the NCAA Tourney, that's ridiculous.
