They scored less points than their opponents for 5 straight games....

They're just not that good. They had a really easy non-conference schedule, but now that they are in conference play, they are having a hard time stacking up. Note that it took them to get to 12-0 or 13-0 before they were finally even ranked, so there SOS is awful.

              vs.
              #25 Syracuse (14-5) vs. #5 West Virginia (17-2)
              WVU Coliseum
              Morgantown, WV
              January 22nd, 2022

No. 25 Syracuse (14-5, 6-1 Big East) had surprisingly jumped out to a 6-0 start in conference play after a rather mediocre start in non-conference play. However, the Orange had to visit Morgantown today to take on the No. 5 West Virginia Mountaineers (17-2, 5-2 Big East). Though the Mountaineers had taken earlier losses to Seton Hall and Pittsburgh (both on the road), WVU was favored in this one and they did not disappoint. WVU jumped out to a 38-30 halftime lead and never really looked back in the second half en route to an 80-64 victory.

The Mountaineers never really jumped out to a huge lead. In fact, their largest lead of the game came at the final buzzer with a 16-point lead. However, WVU easily kept control of this one as Syracuse seemed to have a little chance to mount a comeback. The WVU lead hovered in the 8-12 point range for much of the second half before the Mountaineers mounted a bit of a run at the end of the game to extend the lead to 16 points.

The undisputed star of the game was Marquel Proffitt. The senior center recorded 22 points, seven rebounds, and a pair of blocks. However, more impressively, he shot 10 for 10 from the field. Though he missed three of his five free throw attempts, the senior center was money all night long. Of course, part of the reason was that he got many easy dunks and layup attempts against an outclassed and outsized Syracuse frontcourt. Nevertheless, his performance was remarkable and perhaps one of the very finest in his decorated career as a Mountaineer.

Osei Forney also did work against the Syracuse frontcourt, totaling 10 point, eight rebounds, and three assists. Allen Pena scored 17 points to go along with four rebounds and three assists while Raynardo Admundson tallied six points and 10 assists.

Lavell Faulk led Syracuse in scoring with 18 points, four rebounds, and three assists. Patricio Begley came off the bench to add 14 points while Seth Rodriguez recorded 10 points and three assists.

West Virginia has two days off before a monumental matchup with South Florida in Morgantown on Tuesday, January 25th.

Just when you thought the Mountaineers (17-3, 5-3 Big East) had it going, they disappoint again. After three consecutive victories, No. 5 West Virginia had a chance to notch a top-quality win against No. 3 South Florida (19-2, 7-1 Big East) this evening in Morgantown. But as it turned out, the Mountaineers got slapped around all night long, as the Bulls routed the Mountaineers 81-65.

It was a turnover-filled slugfest with the Mountaineers committing a season-high 23 turnovers and the Bulls committing 20 of their own, also a season-high.

However, the Bulls shot 53% from the floor, which helped to downplay their vast quantity of turnovers. WVU only shot 38%.

South Florida's Kevin Zachery scored a game-high 34 points and grabbed four steals as his exploits all game long helped to power USF to an early lead and an eventual rout. The senior shooting guard shot 12-for-17 from the field and drained all six of his attempts from the charity stripe.

Power forward Clarence Watts was the only other USF player to score in double-digits as he tallied a double-double with 11 points and 10 boards.

Though mired in foul trouble early on, Marquel Proffitt still had a solid game for WVU, scoring 20 points and grabbing seven rebounds. Justino Whitworth also played well, hitting four treys en route to 12 points.

"When you commit 23 turnovers," Coach Frizzell explained, "you can't expect to win many ball games. "When you also only shoot 38% from the field, you can't expect to win any games. That about sums up my thoughts about today's game."

The Mountaineers will try to bounce on Saturday on the road against Rutgers.

If we do play again, it won't be until the Big East Tournament or the NCAA Tournament. We just didn't come out to play and played some bad defense that game.

They are rated about the same as I am, but they are definitely good. Nevertheless, I had a bad night shooting and missed some open shots and my defense was sketchy at best.

                            January 31st, 2022

No. 5 West Virginia (18-3, 6-3 Big East) edged Rutgers (15-8, 6-4 Big East) 58-55 this afternoon on the road in Piscataway, New Jersey. The Mountaineers led 30-18 at halftime and held a sizable lead throughout much of the second half before Rutgers mounted a rally late.

Unfortunately for the Scarlet Knights and the home crowd, Rutgers' comeback petered out in the last few minutes and the Scarlet Knights would fall three points short from a victory over the No. 5 team in the nation.

The Mountaineers were led in scoring by Barry George, who came off the bench to drain three triples en route to 11 points and three steals. Raynardo Admundson recorded 10 points, three rebounds, and four assists. Allan Pena and Marquel Proffitt both scored 10 points.

Rutgers' Varney Luz scored a game-high 15 points. Lyndale Swift also played well for the Scarlet Knights as he finished with 10 points, four rebounds, and five assists.

It should also be noted that power forward Arden Mann was added to the active roster for this game and is expected to stay on the active roster for the remainder of the season. Mann, a 6'8" sophomore, gives the Mountaineers more depth in the frontcourt and will replace freshman shooting guard Kelyn Clemmons, who has only appeared in eight games this year. Mann had a decent debut, recording one rebound and a steal in 11 minutes of game time.

The Mountaineers will take on hated rival Pittsburgh in Morgan town on Monday evening. WVU lost to Pittsburgh in Pittsburgh earlier this season 62-59 and they will look to get revenge on the Panthers for the result in their previous matchup on Monday night.

You took it to 'Cuse, a team that looks like could be contenders the rest of the way, but then had a rough turnover prone game against
South Florida and followed that up by almost getting upset by Rutgers.

Looks like you may have your hands full this season in what looks like an awfully strong Big East.
