    February 27th, 2021

With four starters scoring in double-figures, the 15th-ranked Louisville Cardinals (20-8, 11-5 Big East) overcame a 46-37 halftime deficit to defeat the tenth-ranked West Virginia Mountaineers (22-7, 10-6 Big East) in Morgantown this afternoon by a final score of 84-72.

The Mountaineers led for the entirety of the first half and their lead swelled to close to 20 points during that span. However, Louisville, made a run near the end of the half to cut the WVU lead to just nine points going into the locker room.

In the second half, Louisville was seemingly a different team. The Cardinals came out hot from the locker room and quickly closed the deficit. For much of the second half, the game was neck-and-neck with both teams trading baskets and the lead often. In the closing minutes, Louisville would make a run, though, and would hit their foul shots at the end of the game to earn a huge win over a conference rival.

The Cardinals were led by Eric Patton, who scored 20 points and collected three steals. Brion Akpan totaled 19 points and seven rebounds while Garry Dougthit tallied 15 points and seven rebounds. Caron Bender came close to a double-double with 10 points and nine rebounds.

Two Mountaineers collected double-doubles in this one. Raynardo Admundson scored 17 points to go along with a career-high 12 assists. Meanwhile, Marquel Proffitt scored 14 points to go along with 10 rebounds.

The Mountaineers will close out the regular season next week with games against sub-.500 opponents DePaul and Georgetown.

It wasn't as easy as anticipated, but the West Virginia Mountaineers (23-7, 11-6 Big East) outlasted the DePaul Blue Demons (10-18, 5-12 Big East) 73-65 this evening in Milwaukee.

The Blue Demons held a 34-32 halftime advantage and kept the game close right up until the end. With 50 seconds remaining, DeShaun Chatman sank a couple free throws to break the 63-63 tie and gave the Mountaineers the lead for good. WVU would sink its free throws and escape with an eight-point victory over a 10-18 team.

"We struggled; no doubt about that," said Coach Frizzell. "However, this was a road game and DePaul has won five games in the Big East, so it's not as if they are some pasty that has gotten beat by 30 by every conference opponent.

"I admit that we probably overlooked [Depaul] a bit, but the Blue Demons played well, too, and you have to give them credit."

DePaul's Aki Rhodes led all players in scoring with 20 points, five rebounds, and three assists. Junior shooting guard Michael Bird was the only other Blue Demon in double-figures with 11 points and four assists.

With Marquel Proffitt sidelined on the bench with severe foul trouble, Osei Forney performed marvelously. The 7'0" freshman scored 16 points to go along with a career-high 12 rebounds and picked up his first career double-double. In addition to Forney's performance, Dinky Woods scored 15 points and grabbed three boards while Allan Pena totaled 10 points, four rebounds, and three assists.

West Virginia will close out the season against Georgetown at home on Saturday. It will be the final home game for seniors Dinky Woods, DeShaun Chatman, and Josh Bigby.

This is not the way you want to head into the Big East Tournament.

The Georgetown Hoyas (14-17, 3-15 Big East) ended their horrible season on a good note, beating 13th-ranked West Virginia (23-8, 11-7 Big East) 71-66 to win their second consecutive game.

For West Virginia, it was a devastating loss on Senior Night.

"We really wanted to win this one for the seniors," said Coach Frizzell. "Unfortunately, we came out sloppy and unprepared. This was Georgetown's last game of the year since they will miss out on the Big East Tournament, so this was like their Super Bowl and we were not prepared for it."

Dinky Woods, a senior, ended with 11 points and six rebounds. Raynardo Admundson totaled 11 points, seven assists, and three steals while Osei Forney tallied 11 points and six rebounds.

Marquel Proffitt had what was likely the worst game of his career. Mired in foul trouble for the majority of the affair, the junior center only made one of his 13 shot attempts for four points and six rebounds.

Senior power forward DeShaun Chatman did all he could to will the Mountaineers to a victory from off the bench, scoring 10 points and grabbing six rebounds. WVU's other senior, Josh Bigby, had a game he would probably rather forget as he only made two of his eight shot attempts for four points and a pair of steals.

The Hoyas were led by junior small forward Maury West, who scored 21 points to go along with three rebounds. Dawin Timmerman came up with a double-double, scoring 11 points to go along with 14 rebounds, while Lodrick Morales came off the bench to add 11 points.

With the season over, the Mountaineers will await their matchup in the upcoming Big East Tournament next week.

                        New York, NY
                        March 11th, 2021

The UConn Huskies (24-8, 11-7 Big East) won their eighth game in a row this afternoon as they blew out No. 16 West Virginia (23-9, 11-7 Big East) 86-58.

West Virginia won the first matchup between these two teams back on January 13rd, when then-No. 3 WVU defeated then-No. 4 UConn by a final score of a 83-73. That loss would send UConn on a downward spiral which would land them at 16-8 following a 90-82 home loss to Rutgers. Since then UConn has not lost a game, though WVU is the first ranked opponent the Huskies have faced during their eight game winning streak.

No. 16 UConn jumped out to a huge lead early on in this one and led 41-21 at the half. The Mountaineers were never really in the game as UConn put on a clinic in all facets of the game. WVU made a run early in the second half to cut the lead to 14, but the Huskies quickly regained momentum and went on to win by 28.

"We got beat and slapped around by a better team, period," said Coach Frizzell. "Since our first matchup, they have gotten much better. We, on the other hand, have not and perhaps have even regressed."

Junior small forward Solomon Collum led the Huskies with 19 points and three rebounds. Center Jean Rollins nearly collected a double-double as he finished with 11 points and eight rebounds. Martell Defares scored 10 points and collected four rebounds while Lelan Sims came of the bench to contribute 11 points.

Marquel Proffitt was plagued with foul trouble all game long and only played 11 minutes for the Mountaineers. Osei Forney stepped up in his absence, totaling 16 points and eight rebounds, but it wasn't enough as he was the only Mountaineer to really step his game up this afternoon at the Garden.

West Virginia now has a 23-9 record and will await Selection Sunday. The Mountaineers are currently projected to be a #5 seed, but we will see how that works out.
