(5) West Virginia (26-9) vs. (1) Texas Tech (28-5)
Alamodome
San Antonio, TX
March 26th, 2021
The West Virginia Mountaineers (26-9) willed their way to the Elite Eight with a thrilling 72-69 victory over the #1-seeded Texas Tech Red Raiders (28-5) this afternoon at the Alamodome in San Antonio.
The Mountaineers led 70-69 in the closing seconds, but Texas Tech had the ball. Everyone knew the ball was going to Seamus Jackette, but could he be stopped. The junior guard had 19 points and had hit eight of his 13 shot attempts up to that point. He did get the ball and got a mid-range jump shot off, but his shot clanked off the rim and Dinky Woods got the rebound. Woods was fouled with 1.9 seconds left and proceeded to make both foul shots to give the Mountaineers a three-point lead.
Texas Tech managed to heave up a prayer from past half-court, but it didn't even hit the rim as the Mountaineers claimed a huge victory over the #1 seed in the South Regional.
It was truly a team effort for West Virginia as all five starters scored in double-figures. Marquel Proffitt came up big with a double-double, scoring 10 points to go along with 12 rebounds and three assists. Dinky Woods scored 11 points and grabbed three rebounds. Osei Forney, Allan Pena, and Raynardo Admundson all scored 10 points apiece.
"This is a huge win for us," said Coach Frizzell, who will be coaching in his third Elite Eight in four years. "Most people didn't expect us to win this one, but we went out and showed everyone that we are a force to be reckoned with. We struggled in the closing games of the regular season and were bounced in the Big East Tournament early on, but the Big Dance gives us a chance for redemption, and I think we have redeemed ourselves."
The Mountaineers will face #2-seeded Utah on Sunday in the South Regional Championship Game. The winner will go to the 2021 Final Four in Houston.

Re: Coaching Legacy of James Frizzell (CH 2K8)
Utah went 29-6 (13-3 MWC) this season. We went 26-9 (11-7 Big East).
Utah has an RPI of 14. We have an RPI of 9.
Stats (UTAH/WVU):
PPG: 82.4 / 73.1
RPG: 31.7 / 32.3
APG: 15.4 / 15.1
STL: 8.2 / 9.8
BLK: 5.0 / 3.6
TO: 9.8 / 13.1
FG%: 43.3 / 44.2
FT%: 74.1 / 81.6
3P%: 39.8 / 35.4
We are pretty evenly matched. However, I have a big advantage at the power forward position where Osei Forney, a seven-footer, is matched up against a 6'5" Utah PF. We will see if we can handily exploit that.Comment

#2 Utah (29-7) vs. #5 West Virginia (27-9)
Alamodome
San Antonio, TX
March 28th, 2021
West Virginia (27-9) is in the Final Four for only the second time in school history and the first time since 1959. The #5-seeded Mountaineers, led by second-year coach James Frizzell, defeated the #2-seeded Utah Utes (29-7) 71-61 this evening in San Antonio to win the South Regional and advance to the 2021 Final Four in Houston.
The Mountaineers never trailed against the Utes, though WVU also never possessed a lead of more than 12 points.
WVU led 28-20 at halftime behind a potent defensive effort. Both teams' defenses would relax in the second half and the Utes would make a run to tie it at 40 apiece at one point, but the Mountaineers never let Utah take the lead and went on to win by 10.
"We played very well against a tremendous basketball team," said Coach Frizzell. "This is our fourth victory in the Big Dance this year and we haven't won any of them by more than 10 points. I think that just goes to show how determined we are to win. We win close games."
Coach Frizzell will be making his fourth Final Four appearance. His first came at Princeton and two others came in his final two years coaching at San Francisco. In addition, this will be his third Final Four appearance in four years. Unfortunately, for those three previous Final Four appearances, Frizzell has a 1-3 record to show for it and a blowout loss to Maryland in the NCAA Title Game in his final season at San Francisco.
Raynardo Admundson led the Mountaineers in scoring with 17 points, three rebounds, and seven assists. Marquel Proffitt scored 12 points to go along with eight rebounds and four assists while Osei Forney totaled 10 points and five rebounds.
Utah point guard Yakhouba Salazar led all scorers with 22 points and five assists. Nick Romero was the only other Utah player to reach double-figures as he tallied 14 points, five rebounds, and four assists.
The Mountaineers will face the Midwest Regional Champion Oregon State Beavers in the Final Four. The Beavers were the #1 seed in the Midwest Bracket and blew out #7-seeded Maryland 88-71 in the Midwest Regional Final. The Beavers won the Pac-10 with a 31-7 (12-6 Pac-10) record this season.

Re: Coaching Legacy of James Frizzell (CH 2K8)
We're going to (or did) mix up our defenses. We threw in some man, some 2-3 zone, and some 1-3-1 zone, and went with whatever was hot. This seemed to get OSU off balance.Comment

#1 Oregon State (31-8) vs. #5 West Virginia (28-9)
Reliant Stadium
Houston, TX
April 3rd, 2021
The West Virginia Mountaineers (28-9) are going to the National Championship Game for the second time in school history! The Mountaineers dominated #1-seeded Oregon State (31-8) this evening in Houston 77-56 to claim their spot in the National Championship Game against Washington on Monday night.
The Mountaineers led 39-25 at halftime and dominated in the second half, taking a 30-point lead at one point before the benches were cleared and the backups got some playing time for the Mountaineers. The lead would be eroded in the closing minutes, but the Mountaineers would still win rather comfortably, with a margin of victory of 21 points.
WVU's leading scorer came from off the bench. Josh Bigby hit four three-pointers en route to 19 points and five assists this evening. Dinky Woods scored 17 points and grabbed six rebounds while Allan Pena added 14 points. Raynardo Admundson totaled 10 assists while DeShaun Chatman came off the bench to add four points and 12 key rebounds.
Four Oregon State Beavers scored in double-figures, but with almost no contributions from the bench, this was a must. Clayton Goodrich led the Beavers in scoring with 12 points while Garik Haigler put in an impressive performance with 10 points and nine rebounds.
With Washington's 89-85 victory over Tennessee earlier this evening, the Mountaineers will face off against the #5-seeded Huskies on Monday night to play for it all.
