    A Tale of Two Halves

Corvallis, OR (AP) - The 25th-ranked Oregon State Beavers (2-0) escaped with a win against a pesky San Francisco Dons (2-1) team tonight, but it wasn't without drama.

The Dons took a 17-point lead late in the second half as everything began to go their way. However, the Beavers were able to get to within 10 points at halftime.

"We played exceptionally well in the first half," stated Coach Frizzell. "However, it appeared that [Oregon State] played a bit timidly in the first half, too, and they changed that up in the second half. Simply put, we were unprepared for what was to come."

The Beavers stormed out of the locker room on a roll, scoring 16 unanswered points and going on a 37-13 run to build a lead of 65-51 late in the second half, effectively putting the game out of reach. The Dons could never get on track thereafter and ended up sputtering to an 18-point loss.

"The fact that we got outscored 48-20 in the second half bugs me a lot, but the fact that we outscored Oregon State 38-28 in the first half on the road pleases me," said Coach Frizzell. "I guess I can't come away too disappointed. This wasn't a game we were supposed to win, but it's a shame to let a 17-point slip away like this. This is a lesson learned, I suppose."

Ronny Gregory was excellent for the Dons in the first half, where he scored 13 of his 16 points. He also tallied 4 assists. After having a miserable shooting day against Utah Valley State, Walter Proffitt bounced back tonight as he ended with 12 points and a pair of rebounds. Bernard Mendoza added 8 points and 3 rebounds while Galen Pettway had a nice game down low, totaling 5 points, 10 rebounds, 4 steals, and 2 blocks.

The Beavers tore the Don's low-post defense up and the box score is a testament to that. Matthew Thomas tore the Dons up with 20 points, 5 rebounds, and 3 blocks. However, it was Otis Crites that really inflicted his will on USF as he scored 21 points and grabbed 14 monster rebounds in a game in which the Beavers out-rebounded the Dons by a 39-29 margin.

The road doesn't get any easier for the Dons, however, as they will take on the 14th-ranked Arizona Wildcats (0-3) next. However, the Dons should take solace in two things. First, the game will be played at home at War Memorial Gymnasium. Second, despite their ranking, the Wildcats have started off 0-3 with losses at home versus 12th ranked Gonzaga (1-1) and Cal Poly (1-1) and a road loss at Buffalo (4-0).

Watch out for the 'Cats. They might be just a tad bit hungry after the losses to Cal Poly & Buffalo.

Wildcats Take San Francisco to the Woodshed on the Road

San Francisco, CA (AP) - The Arizona Wildcats (1-3) started off their season 0-3 with several embarrassing losses, catapulting them out of the polls after starting the season ranked 14th. However, they were out to blood tonight and there was no stopping them.

The Wildcats jumped way out front right off the bat and toyed with the San Francisco Dons (2-2), who were ranked seventh in the first Mid-Major Top 25 Poll of the season, for the rest of the way. Arizona held a 60-35 halftime lead and didn't let up until the final whistle, which ended in a 38-point defeat for the Dons, Coach Frizzell's biggest blowout loss in many, many years.

"I don't think I've ever seen a team play as well as Arizona did against us," stated Coach Frizzell. "They played flawlessly while we had many flaws. They were just better prepared and more talented. I don't know what else to say.

"We were never in this game and it wasn't even close to being close. I really thought we may be able to put up a fight after blowout a 17-point lead on the road against a ranked Oregon State team, but Arizona had other desires and they inflicted their will on us today.

"Our guys may have been a little overconfident after seeing that Arizona was 1-3 coming into this game with a couple of rather embarrassing losses. We had better not do that again as we got burned, plain and simple."

Ronny Gregory still had a solid game for the Dons. Gregory had 15 points off of five three-point baskets. Walter Proffit was the only other USF player in double-figures as he added 14 points.

No player scored over 17 points for the Wildcats as it was a true team effort. Every player on their roster recorded at least 5 points in this one as most backups got a lot of playing time due to the blowout. Todor Thibodeaux led the way for the Wildcats with 17 points. He was 4-6 from three-point range, including a 30-foot dagger before halftime with time expiring and a man in his face.

The Dons play a winless Boise State (0-2) team this Sunday evening in Boise. Boise can be a dangerous team, so the Dons may have trouble if they continue to play so poorly.

Dons Continue Slide With Last-Second Loss

Boise, ID (AP) - The San Francisco Dons (2-3) could not end their slide in Boise this evening as they lost their third straight game against the Boise State Broncos (2-2), who are now on a two-game winning streak.

This was a very exciting back-and-forth affair which was not decided until the final buzzer sounded and the clock struck 0.0. With 24 seconds left and the scored knotted up at 74 apiece, the Broncos sunk a huge mid-range bucket to make it 76-74. The pressure was on the Dons now to score or go home with another loss.

Coach Frizzell drew up a play which got Ronny Gregory and open look from three-point range, but the game-winner bounced off the rim and the USF Dons went home with another loss. The miss just added to Gregory's struggles as he was only 3-11 from the field and 3-9 from downtown on the day. Still, he ended with 9 points, 7 rebounds, and 3 assists.

This loss also marks the first time since the 2007-2008 season that a Coach Frizzell-coached team has had a sub-.500 record.

"This loss is tough because I fear that we're on a downward spiral," stated Coach Frizzell. "We just need to regroup and get our stuff together. We've lost to three very good basketball teams, so we can't get too down on ourselves. We have to get this out of our head and play like we're 0-0, not 2-3."

Walter Proffitt still shined for the Dons in the loss as he tallied 165 points and 5 rebounds. Bernard Mendoza totaled 14 points, 4 rebounds, and 4 steals while Clement Pattorson and Jason Redick came off the bench to chip in 8 points apiece.

The road doesn't get any easier from here as the Dons' next two opponents have a combined 9-0 record thus far this season. However, the Dons will have six days to get their stuff together before they take on their next opponent at home in the Hawaii Warriors (4-0), a team that offered Coach Frizzell a job this past off-season, but he rejected in favor of USF. So there could be some bad blood there. The following Saturday the Dons will take on the Wyoming Cowboys (5-0), who are off to a blistering 5-0 start.

San Francisco Ends Losing Skid at Home Against Hawaii

San Francisco, CA (AP) - The San Francisco Dons ended their three-game losing skid against the previously-unbeaten Hawaii Rainbow Warriors (5-1) this evening.

The Dons were propelled by a balanced effort as five players got into double-figures. Freshman point guard led the way with 15 points and 7 assists. Both statistics are new career-highs for the freshman. Freshamn power forward Bernard Mendoza also set a new career-high with 14 points to go along with 6 rebounds.

The Dons led 39-36 at halftime and managed to hold onto the lead until the final buzzer sounded, with Ronny Gregory sinking several free-throws in the final minute to seal the victory after Hawaii got within three points of the Dons. Gregory ended with 14 points.

Walter Proffitt and Clement Patterson were the other two Dons player in double-figures. Proffitt totaled 12 points while Patterson came off the bench to contribute 10 points and 7 rebounds.

"We played really well tonight and it was nice to see," stated Coach Frizzell. "We showed great resiliency after blowing our last three ballgames. This is a big win to help get us back on the right track."

The Don's road will get no easier as they will take on the undefeated Wyoming Cowboys (8-0) in one week.

Second-Half Run Propels Wyoming Past San Francisco

Laramie, WY (AP) - The San Francisco Dons (3-4) missed out on a chance to take down two undefeated teams in a row as they narrowly were defeated on the road in a loss to the Wyoming Cowboys (9-0).

The Dons and the Cowboys were engaged in a tight battle early on, with USF securing a small lead for most of the first half. However, the score was knotted up at 31 at the half.

The first five minutes of the second half were key in this game as Wyoming went on a big run early on to take a sizable advantage, which would eventually swell to 13 points later on in the second half. USF was down but not out, and they showed that by mounting a comeback in the final minutes of the game.

The Dons got within five points and had a chance to get within three points, or one possession, with 50 seconds to go in the game. Walter Proffitt may have tallied a career-high 21 points to go along with 7 rebounds in an all-around stellar game, but he couldn't hit when it counted. Proffitt was fouled on a drive to the hoop, giving him a shot to get withing a single possession if he sank both free throws. Unfortunately, disaster struck when he missed both of the freebies, effectively sealed the Dons' fate and sending them home with a loss.

"It's tough to blow a chance like that, but you can't be too hard on the kid," explained Coach Frizzell. "It was a hostile, loud crowd against a very good basketball team. He shouldn't have missed those two freebies, but he did. There's nothing we can do about it now. He did his best and I don't think it's fair to blame this loss on him. If it weren't for his scoring and reboudning, we probably wouldn't have been in the situation to begin with because we'd be far behind."

This game also saw a shake-up in the ratation with junior center Clement Patterson taking the place of senior center Galen Pettway in the starting lineup. So far this year, Pettway was only shooting 27.2% from the field and was flatly unproductive scoring the basketball. Clement Patterson is shooting 55.5% from the field and is averaging 6.6 points and 3.6 rebounds off the bench so far this season.

"I really hated to bench [Pettway], but we need to do what's best for the team and we just need a bigger body and a bigger offensive threat down low," explained Coach Frizzell.

Patterson responded with 7 points in this game. Matt Owen was the only Dons player in double-figures besides Walter Proffitt as he ended with 15 points and 3 assists.

The Cowyboys were led down low by the domination of Rickey Griffin. The 6'8 senior center tallied 25 points and 6 assists while shooting 10-15 from the field and 4-4 from the charity stripe.

The Dons will take on the Southern Illinois Salukis (2-4) in Carbondale, IL on Tuesday evening of next week before taking on the Air Force Falcons (6-4) at home on Friday.

                        Dons Get Back on Track

Carbondale, IL (AP) - The San Francisco Dons (4-4) evening their record at .500 tonight as they defeated the Southern Illinois Salukis (2-5) by a score of 77-66. The Dons were propelled by Matt Owen and Walter Proffitt, both of which surpassed 20-point barrier. Owen tallied 20 points and 5 assists while Walter Proffit added 21 points and 6 rebounds as the Dons picked up a huge win.

The Dons trailed early on by as many as six points, but they got their act together and by the 10:00 mark in the first half, the Dons were back ahead and rooling. USF coasted into the locker room with an 11-point advantage with the score 38-27 in their favor.

The Salukis tried to make it interesting for a few minutes in the second half as they never gave up. With eight minutes remaining in the game, Southern Illinois got to within four points of USF. Coach Frizzell called a timeout to stop the rally and his team responded with a huge run to effectively seal the game as the Dons would lead by as many as 15 points just a few minutes later.

"I got a little nervous towards the end that we might blow this because we seemed to lose our way out there and started to get complacent, but we pulled through alright," said Coach Frizzell. "Overall, we played pretty well. We weren't perfect, but we played about as good as I could have expected. This was a tough road game and we won, so I won't be complaining."

The Salukis were led by Jermaine Queen, who totaled 19 points, 4 rebounds, and 4 assists. Cam Andrew scored a double-double for the Salukis with 14 points and 12 rebounds.

USF was actually out-rebounded by the Salukis 36-32, but USF played very well on defense and forced 15 turnovers, which were key to the Dons' victory.

San Francisco will take on the Air Force Falcons (6-4) in San Francisco this Friday, December 9th.

San Francisco Nearly Blows It, but Recovers to Win in Overtime

San Francisco, CA (AP) - The San Francisco Dons (5-4) thought they had this one in the bag midway through the second half and up by 19 points. However, they were very, very wrong.

The Air Force Falcons (6-4) didn't ever give up and took advantage of some complacency by the Dons with such a huge lead and only 10 minutes remaining. The Falcons went on a huge run to make it closer, but still trailed by six points with a minute remaining.

The Dons would hit a three-pointer to pull within three points. The Dons would miss the ensuing free throw, giving the Falcons one last chance to tie the game up with a three-pointer. Air Force's Quincy Buggs would make that happen with a clutch three-pointer with a man in his face as time expired to knot the game up at 82-all with no time left on the clock. It was overtime.

Coach Frizzell received some criticism from the media for not fouling with just five seconds remaining after the inbound pass. "I stand by my call," he said. "I like to play straight-up defense in those situations because too many things can go wrong when you start heading to the free throw line."

Fortunately, Coach Frizzell's decision wouldn't much matter as the Dons firmly took control in the extra period to roll to a 97-90 overtime win at home.

The Dons were led by Walter Proffitt's 21 points, 6 rebounds, 3 assists, and 4 steals. Matt Owen kept up his superb play with 17 points and 7 assists while Ronny Gregory ended with 14 points, 5 assists, and 6 steals, mainly due to his performance from three free throw line, where he went 9-10. Clement Patterson showed us why he was inserted into the starting lineup as he ended with 13 points and 8 rebounds. Galen Pettway, who Patterson replaced, showed his worth coming off the bench, as well, as he totaled 11 points and 8 rebounds.

Joonas Gibbs and Brandyn Hernandez both scored double-doubles for the Falcons. Gibbs tallied 11 points, 10 rebounds, and a pair of blocks while Hernandez added 15 points, 10 rebounds, and 5 assists.

The Dons begin the Hawaiian Island Classic next Wednesday. They will face the Southern Methodist Mustangs (3-5) in the first round.

Dons Cruise Past SMU to the Second Round

Honolulu, HI (AP) - The San Francisco Dons (6-4) won their third consecutive game this afternoon as they easily downed the SMU Mustangs (3-6) by a final score of 84-67 to move onto the second round of the Hawaiian Island Classic.

The Dons never trailed and often led by wide margins on their way to a 17-point win.

Six players got into double-figures scoring the basketball for the Dons, including all five starters. They dons were led by Walter Proffitt's 16 points, 5 rebounds, and 3 steals and Clement Patterson's 16 points, 7 rebounds, and 3 assists. Patterson's 16 points marks a new career-high for the junior center.

"We played very well and this is a nice run we're on now," commented Coach Frizzell. "Hopefully, we can carry this momentum into the next round and get ourselves into the championship game in a few days."

In addition to Proffitt and Patterson's performances, Ronny Gregory totaled 12 points and 5 boards while Matt Owen added 10 points and 5 assists. Galen Pettway also chipped in 11 points and 5 rebounds off the bench for the Dons.

Daren Lang's 13 points and Coleman Andres' 12 points led the way for the Mustangs and were the only to SMU players to top 10 points.

The Dons offense shot 53% from the floor in the win.

Coach Frizzell's Dons will match up with a familiar Ivy League foe in the Harvard Crimson (2-7) in the second round. Harvard topped Gardner-Webb (4-5) 79-63 in the first round.
