San Francisco Advances to the Championship Game

Honolulu, HI (AP) - The San Francisco Dons (7-4) won their fourth consecutive game this evening to advance to the Hawaiian Island Classic Championship Game tomorrow against the Louisiana-Lafayette Ragin' Cagins (6-3). USF's victim was Coach Frizzell's old Ivy League adversary, the Harvard Crimson (2-8).

The Dons easily jumped way out early due to the efforts of Walter Proffitt, who scored a career-high 21 points to go along with 4 rebounds and 3 assists. The Dons settled in during the second half and never really pulled much further ahead than 20 points, but still won by a solid 19 points.

"We didn't exactly blow [Harvard] out, but we were in full control of this game," stated Coach Frizzell. "I think we have a good shot at knocking out the Ragin' Cajuns and claiming the tournament title."

Matt Owen neared a double-double this evening with 12 points and a career-high 8 assists as he continues to progress throughout his freshman season. Bernard Mendoza tallied 14 points and 3 rebounds while Ronny Gregory added 9 points and 5 rebounds.

Harvard was led by Freshman center Marco Patton, who ended with 19 points, 7 rebounds, 3 assists, and 5 steals.

"[Patton] was great," stated Coach Frizzell, "but we kept every other one of their players under 10 points and that was the reason we won this ball game."

      Louisiana-Lafayette Wins Hawaiian Island Classic

Honolulu, HI (AP) - The Louisiana-Lafayette Ragin' Cajuns (7-3) won their first ever Hawaiian Island Classic Championship this evening. The Ragin' Cajuns were led by a pair of players who scored double-doubles in Predrag Ramsey and Anil Bronson. Ramsey tallied 14 points, 10 rebounds, and 4 assists while Bronson added 20 points, 10 rebounds, and two blocks.

The San Francisco Dons (7-5) fell behind early on and were never in the game for the most part. The Dons trailed by 18 points at halftime and by as many as 20 points early in the second half before making a late run to pull within six points. However, a counter-run by the Ragin' Cajuns would put an end to the Dons' hopes as they would go down in flames by a final score of 83-73.

The Dons were led by another great showing by Walter Proffitt, who ended with 22 points, 3 assists, and 4 steals. Ronny Gregory added 16 points while Matt Owen tacked on 9 points and 7 assists. Freshman guard Jason Redick also came off the bench to score a career-high 13 points.

"[Louisiana-Lafayette was] just better than us tonight," stated Coach Frizzell. "We were out-hustled on the glass and throughout the whole game."

The Dons were out-rebounded by a stunning 42-23 margin and Coach Frizzell found that unacceptable. "I know we're not exactly a big team," the coach said, "so I don't expect us to go out and dominate the boards like some of my teams have done in the past back at Princeton, but there's no excuse for being out-rebounded by 19, especially since [Louisiana Lafayette's] front line is 6'10 and 6'7. It's not like they've got a pair of seven-footers commanding the paint."

Coach Frizzell will finally get a chance to take a crack at his former team tomorrow as the Dons must fly all the way from Hawaii to New Jersey in one day to take on the 23rd-ranked Princeton Tigers (8-2). "It's pretty terrible that our athletic director can't schedule these games a little better because this is going to be tough on our kids to play our third game in three days while flying all the way across the country to play one of the better teams in the nation," Coach Frizzell explained.

Coach Frizzell Beaten by His Former Team

Princeton, NJ (AP) - Coach Frizzell's homecoming was a delightful experience for him and the Princeton (9-2) fans, but it wasn't so great for the San Francisco Dons (7-6), who were upended by #23 Princeton as USF dropped its second consecutive game.

"It was great to return home and see familiar faces and players, but I just wish we could have won," commented Coach Frizzell.

Romain Bright used the occasion to display his spectacular offensive skills as he lit the Dons defense up for 25 points, 4 rebounds, 4 assists, and 3 steals. Wesley French scored his first career double-double with 15 points, 4 rebounds, and 10 assists while freshman center Sidney Fox, a man who was recruited and signed by Coach Frizzell, added 12 points, 8 rebounds, and 3 assists for the Tigers.

The Dons were no slouches on the offensive side of the ball, either, as it was the defensive side that they struggled on. But when you're facing a potent offensive powerhouse like the Princeton Tigers, defense isn't such an easy task. Princeton shot exactly 50% from the field in this game.

On the offensive side of the ball, the Dons played well. Walter Proffitt led the way with 17 points, 5 rebounds, and 3 assists. Clement Patterson rocked the boat down low with 12 points and 6 rebounds while Matt Owen paced the offense with 9 points, 4 rebounds, and 5 assists. Ronny Gregory connected on 4 of 9 shot attempts to tally 13 points and 3 rebounds while Jason Redick hit a pair of threes from off the bench to add 10 points.

The San Francisco Dons will play the Winston-Salem State Rams (2-8) next Friday to open the Shamrock Office Solutions Classic at the McKeon Pavilion in Morango, California. If USF wins, they will face the winner of the Cal-State Fullerton (4-4)/UNC-Greensboro (4-6) game in the Championship Game.

          Dons Wins Slugfest Over Rams

Morango, CA (AP) - The San Francisco Dons (8-6) halted a two-game losing streak tonight against the Winston-Salem State Rams (2-9), but it wasn't easy.

This game was expected by most to be a relatively easy win for the Dons against one of the worst teams in all of NCAA basketball, but that was far from the case.

The Dons faced extreme difficulty on the offensive end. USF was getting open looks, but they weren't knocking their shots down and this was evidenced by only having a 22-16 advantage at the break. Fortunately, the Rams couldn't do much on the offensive end, either.

USF's offense would improve in the second half, where the Dons put 36 points on the scoreboard, but Winston-Salem State's offense would respond by scoring 31 points of their own. In fact, the Rams pulled to within two points with just a couple of minutes remaining before USF when on a run to put the game out of reach.

"Fortunately, we won this, but this was not a good performance at all," stated Coach Frizzell. "We just had an off-night shooting the basketball, but I don't think that this will be a commonality, either."

In all, the Dons shot only 29% from the floor in the first half and 32% total in the game.

Ronny Gregory played well for the Dons, especially in the second half, as he eld USF with 17 points and hit four three-pointers. Bernard Mendoza added 13 points and 3 rebounds while Clement Patterson nearly tacked on a double-double as he ended with 8 points and 10 rebounds.

Winston-Salem State was led by sophomore Babacar Browser, a seven-footer out of Raleigh, NC. Browser used his size advantage over the smaller USF defenders to tally 13 points and 10 rebounds. The only other player to get into double-figures for the Rams was Leland Jefferson, who added 10 points, 4 rebounds, and 5 assists.

UNC-Greensboro (5-6) knocked off Cal State Fullerton (4-5) by a score of 69-44 earlier today, so the San Francisco Dons will take on the UNC-Greensboro Spartans tomorrow evening in the Shamrock Office Solutions Classic Championship Game.

USF Comes Back From 26 Down to Win Championship

Morango, CA (AP) - The San Francisco Dons (9-6) averted absolute disaster tonight against UNC-Greensboro (5-7) as they were able to come back from being 26 down early in the second half to win the Shamrock Office Solutions Classic. That comeback would not have happened if it were not for the best game of Matt Owen's career. After struggling in his past couple of ball games, Owen scored 35 points off 13-17 shooting and also shot 4-4 from three-point range. He also totaled 4 assists.

"Owen was spectacular tonight," commended Coach Frizzell. "The rest of the team was struggling mightily, especially in the first half, but he just stepped up to the plate and showed us why he was a five-star prospect in this past year's class. He definitely has a bright future."

Owen didn't do it all alone, though, as Walter Proffitt added 18 points and 6 rebounds. Clement Patterson also totaled 10 points and 8 rebounds while Galen Pettway added 8 points and career-high 13 rebounds in 21 minutes off the bench.

What is perhaps most remarkable about this game is the sheer amount of points the Dons scored in the second half, especially considering how terrible USF shot in the first half. In the first half, USF shot under 30% from the field and only scored 24 points. In the second half, USF shot well over 50% and scored 64 points. All told, the Dons shot 45% from the field and 36% from three-point range. The Dons also out-rebounded UNC-Greensboro by a 35-26 margin, which included 13 big offensive rebounds.

"It's nice to get this win to have a tournament championship on our resume," commented Coach Frizzell. "The field in this year's Shamrock Office Solutions Classic wasn't exactly top-tier, but we're not going to let that spoil the fun of winning this trophy!"

The Dons will now have a week of rest before they take on the Missouri Tigers (9-4).

San Francisco Wins Third Straight Against Missouri

Columbia, MO (AP) - The San Francisco Dons (10-6) looked worlds better tonight in a road game against a very good Missouri Tigers (9-5) team as the Dons pulled off a quality win. This comes after USF struggled in its last two ball games, one of which involved a 26-point halftime against lowly UNC-Greensboro.

The Dons were led by Ronny Gregory's career-high 23 points and 5-9 three-point shooting. Walter Proffitt added 17 points, 6 rebounds, 3 assists, and 4 steals while Bernard Mendoza tacked on 12 points and 8 rebounds. Matt Owen added 13 points and 6 assists.

The Dons owe their win to a huge start, which gave them a 20-point lead in the first half. The Dons led by 19 at halftime. Missouri would do a good job cutting the lead down to six points late in the game, but USF would embark on one final run to put the game away for good.

The Dons owe their success to their defense. The Dons' defense totaled 19 steals in the game, a rather stunningly high number against a very good Missouri team.

"We did a good job at stepping out in front of passes and picking them off," explained Coach Frizzell. "We converted a lot of those steals into fast-break opportunities. The defensive coverages I use always encourage steals and that's just what happened out there today."

The Dons will take on the San Jose State Spartans (5-8) next Tuesday in USF's final non-conference game of the regular season.

                San Francisco Routs Spartans

San Jose, CA (AP) - The San Francisco Dons (11-6) routed the San Jose Spartans (5-9) this evening to win their final non-conference game of the regular season. The Dons never trailed and the game was never close as the Dons won by a stunningly large margin of 40 points.

USF had a large enough lead to have Coach Frizzell pull most of his starters shortly after halftime after the Dons held a 45-22 lead at the break. The result was that no one played more than 24 minutes of the 40-minute game, giving the players a much-needed break as the Dons prepare for West Coast Conference play, which begins later this week.

Ronny Gregory was the top scorer with 16 points and 6 rebounds, but the biggest contributor may have came off the bench in former starting center Galen Pettway. Pettway talled 10 points and 13 rebounds, making this game the first time he has recorded a double-double in his career. In addition, Walter Proffitt scored 11 points and collected 8 rebounds while Bernard Mendoza added 11 points and 5 rebounds.

The biggest thing that Dons had going for them tonight was their free throw shooting. USF has been a fairly average free throw shooting team this year, but you couldn't tell it tonight. The Dons made 22 of 25 free throw attempts, which equates to 88%. Coach Frizzell's teams back in Princeton were always one of the best free throw shooting teams in the nation, so perhaps some of the things he taught there are being implemented here at San Francisco and they are paying off.

"I always stress free throws because there's nothing worse than getting a easy shot at some points and blowing it," stated Coach Frizzell. "A free throw is a wide open shot with no one pressuring you. You just have to get the motion of the free throw down and practice it a lot. Then it becomes all mental. You just have to ignore the crowd and the players and concentrate on putting that leather ball through the hoop. It sounds simple, but it's harder to do in a real game than one would think."

The Dons' defense had one of its best outings of the year this evening. San Hose State only hit 18-65 from the field, which equates to a lousy shooting percentage of 28%. The Spartans also only made 2 of 19 shots from downtown, which adds up to 11% shooting. Add that to only shooting 8-16 from the free throw line and you have a crisis on the offensive end.

The Dons, now having won four straight, will take on the Loyola Maramount Lions (11-3) Saturday afternoon in San Francisco. The Lions have proved to be one of the better teams in the WCC through non-conference play, so it will surely be a tough test to open WCC play for the Dons.

USF Opens Conference Play With an Exciting Win

San Francisco, CA (AP) - The San Francisco Dons (12-6, 1-0 WCC) won their fifth consecutive game tonight in exciting fashion as they downed the Loyola Maramount Lions (11-4, 0-1 WCC) 82-80 to kick off West Coast Conference play.

The Lions held an early lead and led by a single point at halftime, but USF would pull away early in the second half to take a lead, which would eventually be extended to 10 points. However, Loyola Maramount showed some heart towards the end of the game as they battled all the way back to take a one point lead with 36 seconds remaining after an and-one conversion.

Coach Frizzell quickly drew up a play to get Matt Owen a lane to drive to the basket and it worked quite well, as Owen cruised into the lane and put up an easy layup to go up 81-80. The Lions missed on their ensuing possession and, with six seconds remaining, fouled USF power forward Clement Patterson. Patterson hit the first free throw, but missed the second, which gave Loyola Maramount one last chance. The Lions heaved the ball up-court. Eryk Jennings caught the pass and heaved up a 25-footer with time expiring, which bounced off the side of the iron, ensuring a USF victory by two points.

"There was a lot of excitement out there tonight," beamed Coach Frizzell. "This was a very entertaining game and my blood pressure was sure sky-high there towards the end. Fortunately, [Loyola Maramount] missed the shot there at the end.

"To be honest, we should have never been in such a precarious situation to begin with. We shouldn't have given up a 10-point lead with less than five minutes remaining, but it is what it is and we have to live with it. It's a win and that's all that really matters."

The Dons were led in scoring by Ronny Gregory's 18 points. Walter Proffitt added 16 points and 6 rebounds while Matt Owen neared a double-double with 10 points and 8 assists. Clement Patterson tallied 12 points and 9 rebounds. Jason Redick had another strong performance coming off the bench, hitting 2-3 from downtown to score 10 points.

The Dons will host #13 Gonzaga (14-4, 1-1 WCC) in their next game. The Zags are coming off a 83-74 setback at home against Saint Mary's (10-5, 1-1 WCC) in their past game.

Gonzaga Hands USF Their First Loss in WCC Play

San Francisco, CA (AP) - Coach Frizzell got his first taste of defeat in WCC play tonight as his San Francisco Dons (12-7, 1-1 WCC) were defeated by the 13th-ranked Gonzaga Bulldogs by a score of 84-74. The Zags owe a lot of their success tonight to Pervis Franklin, who scored a career-high 26 points tonight to lead the Bulldogs.

Gonzaga never trailed in the game as the Bulldogs jumped out to a 10-0 lead only four minutes into the game. Gonzaga would hold a 5-10 point lead throughout most of the lead, but USF would cut into it occasionally. With five minutes remaining, USF managed to cut the lead down to 66-63, but Gonzaga would respond with a run to put the game out of reach.

"We played pretty well against Coach Few's boys, so I can't complain too much about this game," stated Coach Frizzell. "Sure, we would have loved to win this one, but I never really thought we could take down a perennial top 25 WCC powerhouse like the Zags. We put up a good fight and I saw a lot of good things out there tonight from my boys."

Ronny Gregory led the way for USF with 16 points, 3 rebounds, and 4 steals. Matt Owen added 14 points and 4 assists while Walter Proffitt tallied 11 points and 4 rebounds. Backup Power forward Colin Soson came off the bench to deliver a career-high 9 points in only 12 minutes of play.

San Francisco will have one day off before they host a very good Pepperdine (12-6, 1-2 WCC) team on Monday.

It looks like it could be an exciting West Coast Conference this season, your first in the conference. Good luck in WCC play.

Thanks, Don. The WCC looks good again this year. It's definitely the best non-power conference and is comparable to some of the weaker power conferences.

                          USF Powers Past Pepperdine

San Francisco, CA (AP) - The San Francisco Dons (13-7, 2-1 WCC) finished off their three-game home stretch tonight with a win to improve to 2-1 in WCC play thus far this season. Their victims were the Pepperdine Waves, who, after starting the season strong, have dropped three straight games in WCC play to fall to 1-3 in conference play.

The Dons were led by two powerful performances from their two stars. Walter Proffitt led the Dons in scoring with 27 huge points. He shot 7-11 from three-point range, breaking his old career-high of five threes made in a single game. Proffitt also accumulated 7 rebounds and 4 assists to go along with his 27 points.

Proffitt was not alone in his fantastic performance, however, as Matt Owen had a phenomenal game, totaling 22 points and a career-high 12 assists. This marks his first career double-double. He was strikingly efficient as he drilled 7-10 from the field, 2-4 from three-point range, and 6-7 from the charity stripe.

"Matt [Owen] and Walter [Proffitt] were the reason we won this game tonight," stated Coach Frizzell. "Don't get me wrong; it was a team effort, but their performances were huge for us and the offense they provided us gave us one of our very best offensive outputs of the season. We needed it as our defense wasn't exactly the best, giving up 80 points."

The Dons shot 52% collectively as a team and 48% from three-point range, where they drilled 14 of 29 three-point attempts. The Dons also accumulated 26 assists as a team.

"I love for my guys to pass the ball and we did a fantastic job of doing so tonight," commented Coach Frizzell.

The Dons will now embark on a two-game road trip before taking on the San Diego Toreros (13-5, 3-1 WCC). Fortunately, both road games are very winnable. The first is against the Portland Pilots (11-6, 2-1 WCC). The Pilots have started off well in WCC play, but it is likely that they will finish with a sub-.500 conference record once it's all said and done. In their final game of the two-game stretch, the Dons will take on the Santa Clara Broncos (10-9, 0-3 WCC), who is yet to win a game in WCC play.

                            Portland Upends San Francisco

Portland, OR (AP) - The Portland Pilots (12-6, 3-1 WCC) kept up their good play this evening as they knocked off the San Francisco Dons (13-8, 2-2 WCC) by a score of 82-80. USF was fairly heavy favorites for this one, even with this was being on the road, but the Pilots were having none of that.

This game was all about willpower and the Pilots just had more left in the tank at the end of the game. The game also featured a great competition between two guys who had career-games. Portland center Gerry Terrell was excellent as he scored a career-high 30 points, 7 rebounds, and added 5 blocks, another career-high for him. He also shot 10-12 from the field and 10-13 from the free-throw line.

Not to be outdone, San Francisco's Walter Proffitt stepped up big. He would score a career-high 30 points and grab 4 rebounds to go along with a career-high 7 steals. He shot 11-12 from the field and 3-9 from downtown.

However, he wasn't able to come up with the big shot when it mattered most. Down 82-80 with 2.1 seconds remaining on the clock, the Dons had one last chance and the ball past half-court. It would have to be a catch-and-shoot, but the Dons should have been able to get off a halfway-decent shot. Instead, Bernard Mendoza inbounded the ball to Proffitt, who turned around. He had a man in his face, but he was feeling it and time was running out, so he heaved up a three-pointer which would have won the game if it were to have went in. Instead, the shot was partially blocked by Portland small forward Romain Modica and that was all she wrote as Portland grabbed another win to improve to a surprisingly good 3-1 record in the WCC.

"That play at the end there is just one of those things that you have to live with," explained Coach Frizzell. "[Portland] did a great job at locking us up and preventing us from getting anything off open. We got the ball to Walter [Proffitt] like we wanted, but he was covered up very tightly by the defense and it showed when his shot got tipped on the release."

The Dons will have one day off before taking on one of the supposed bottom feeders of the WCC in the Santa Clara Broncos (11-9, 1-3 WCC). Santa Clara did win its very first WCC game of the year this year against Loyola Maramount (12-6, 1-3 WCC), however, so the Dons had better not overlook the Broncos.

Is your scoreboard done in excel, if so how do you make it smaller. When I copy and paste it is always big. Oh and I enjoy reading your legacy.

No, the scoreboard is made using HTML. I know it looks big whenever you copy it, but it doesn't look big when you post it. All you have to do to get it is copy my scoreboard and paste it into your post. It will come out exactly like the scoreboard in my posts. Then you just edit the numbers to fit your scoreboard and, wallah, there you go.

                                Thanks for reading!
