Coach Frizzell Resigns, Takes Job at San Francisco
Princeton, NJ (AP) - Princeton head coach James Frizzell has finally made his move. After many years of wondering if and when he'd finally depart from Princeton, he made the move today, as he was picked up by the San Francisco Dons out of the West Coast Conference.
San Francisco is coming off a 25-9 season in which they made it to the second round of the NCAA Tournament as a #8 seed. The Dons also finished second in the WCC, with a record of 9-5, just one game behind Gonzaga, who went 10-4 in WCC play.
Last season the WCC got four of its eight season in the tournament and is heralded as the best mid-major conference, as evidenced of its play over the last 10 years, which includes a National Title by Gonzaga.
"I hate that it has finally come to this, but I feel that it is time to depart Princeton," stated Coach Frizzell in his press conference. "Princeton has served me well and I feel that I've served this university well, but I feel that it's time to part our ways and to broaden my horizons.
"You all have been great here in Princeton and I hope that you all forgive me for leaving. We've built a national power here and I couldn't have done it without the fan support I got here. I wish you all the best of luck, though I'm sure you won't need it. With Romain [Bright] and Wesley [French] deciding not to declare for the NBA Draft, you all will do great next year, even without me pacing the sidelines."
A teary-eyed Frizzell left the podium.
The San Francisco job opened up due to the retirement of longtime USF coach Rex Walters.
USF has a somewhat-storied history with two National Titles and three Final Fours from 1955-1957. In total, San Francisco has seven Elite Eights and 11 Sweet Sixteens in the team's history, but all of them came before 1979.Comment

2016 Recruiting Class
San Francisco, CA (AP) - Coach Frizzell finished up recruiting at his brand new school by signing two new prospects, five-star All-American point guard Matt Owen and 6'8 junior college power forward Standford Boyce.
He didn't have to work much for either recruit, though, as both were firmly bent on heading to San Francisco to go to school.
All-in-all, San Francisco signed five players to this recruiting class, three of which signed during the Fall Signing Period under formed head coach Rex Walters. All of them also hail from California, a hotbed for talented prospects.
"I really feel we have accomplished what we hoped for," stated Coach Frizzell. "We didn't let any recruits drop us from consideration due to the coaching change and we got the guys we should have gotten."
Of course, it likely helps when you are a coach who's won 30 games in three of the past four years, including a Final Four and an Elite Eight appearance.
Overall, this class ranks #22 in that nation and second in the WCC to Pepperdine, whose class is ranked 17th.

San Francisco Ready to Begin New Era
San Francisco, CA (AP) - The San Francisco Dons fans are more excited about their basketball team than since their Final Four teams of the late 1950s.
Now that James Frizzell is their head coach, they expect great things after he turned the lowly Princeton Tigers into a national title contender in his previous stop.
"I really can't wait for this season to start," beamed an excited fan. "We've been pretty good over the last few years, but we never could get over the hump in the Big Dance. I feel like we really have a chance now."
San Francisco only returns one starter, however, so it will be a difficult task to repeat what happened last year at San Francisco.
The Dons have a young lineup with two freshman starting, including High School All-American points guard Matt Owen. Freshman power forward Bernard Mendoza is the other freshman starter and he's turned some heads in training camp.
"I don't know if we'll be great this year, but this team is capable of putting up a good fight," stated Coach Frizzell. "I don't want the fans to get too excited because there's no way we're winning a national title or anything like that, but I think shooting for the WCC Title is not out of the equation."
This team is certainly not of the caliber that Coach Frizzell has enjoyed over his last five or so seasons at Princeton, however, as no player comes in ranked over 80. Last year's Princeton team featured no player under a rating of 70, but this year's USF team features five sub-70 rated players in the 12-man roster and three more that are reserves.
It should be interesting to see what Coach Frizzell can do with this team this season. There is certainly the potential for success, but the Don's youth could end up hurting them. "It'll all come down to how fast our players mature," said Coach Frizzell.

This year's schedule is highlighted by three top 25 teams in non-conference play. The Dons will host #14 Arizona and will make trips to #25 Oregon State and #22 Princeton. Princeton, of course, is where Coach Frizzell coached last season, so that should be a good one.
WCC Conference play is highlighted by two games against 12th-ranked Gonzaga.
Prediction: For now, we're going to keep our predictions modest and have USF narrowly missing out on the NIT. The team is rather young and it may take awhile for Coach Frizzell to break in his new schemes.
Still, though, things could go much better or much worse, depending on how the team develops and how well Coach Frizzell fits in.

Thanks. It's refreshing to get off to a new start. It was getting a bit old dominating the Ivy League. As much as I loved that team, I felt like it was time to shake things up again.Comment

First off, congrats on FINALLY leaving a small conference school to at least a mid-major. Good luck at USF. Were you on any of the power conference school's list, and if so, where were you on their list?
Second, during your time with Princeton, did you ever receive any power conference head coaching offers? If you can read this, thank a teacher. If you can read this in english, thank a soldier.Comment

I've gotten various job offers over the years from power conference schools. I started getting them maybe four years ago, but there really haven't been many openings at the power conference level. They'll be one or two per year of teams that I'm not interested in, but that's about it. This year I got an offer from Maryland, Cincinnati, and DePaul. I gave DePaul some thought since they would be interesting to build, but I decided against it.
I'm probably going to stay at USF until the WVU job opens up. USF attracted me because it still has the allure of being a mid-major, but it's a very competitive conference with several really good teams. Half the conference went dancing last year, which is better than a lot of the power conferences can say (only five of 16 Big East teams made it to the dance, for example).
USF's court is pretty cool, as well.Comment

Re: Coaching Legacy of James Frizzell (CH 2K8)
Matt Owen is pretty good. However, I already played game #1 (I'll hopefully post a recap in a little while) and that Proffitt kid is a tremendous scorer. Owen struggled, but he has a lot of talent, so I'm sure he'll come around sooner rather than later.
Surprisingly, both French and Bright stayed. I thought they'd leave, for sure, but they didn't. French's pro buzz was "Top Pick" and Bright's was "First Round Pick", so, at the very least, I thought French was gone. But apparently they had other ideas.Comment

A Brave New World
San Francisco, CA (AP) - Coach Frizzell kicked off another phase of his coaching career tonight as he coached his first ever team besides Princeton. It went quite well.
The San Francisco Dons (1-0) kicked off their season with a win to start the Coach Frizzell era. Their victim was Drake (0-1), who has been a bottom feeder in the Missouri Valley Conference for the past few seasons.
"I don't know if this win says much about the caliber of our team considering Drake is not exactly elite competition, but we did all we could do and won," commented Coach Frizzell. "I felt like this team played were. I've seen things go quite awry during a coaching transition, but that didn't happen tonight."
Junior small forward Walter Proffitt was amazing tonight for the Dons. Proffitt totaled 20 points, 4 rebounds, 4 assists, and 4 steals as he had an amazing night, both offensively and defensively. He shot 7-8 from the field and went 3-4 from downtown.
The only other USF player to hit double-figures was Bernard Mendoza, who ended with 11 points, 4 rebounds, 4 steals, and 3 blocks. Galen Pettway added 9 points and 9 rebounds while freshman point guard Matt Owen paced the offense with 6 points and 6 assists.
Drake was led by Sal Mitchell, who scored 17 points and hit three three-pointers. Latece Blancett and Zac Dalida also added 10 points apiece for the Bulldogs.
Princeton plays the Utah Valley State Wolverines (0-1) on Tuesday evening before taking on the 25th-ranked Oregon State Beavers (0-0) on Friday.Comment

Dons Blow Away Wolverines
San Francisco, CA (AP) - The San Francisco Dons (2-0) continued their winning ways tonight as they easily stomped out the Utah Valley State Wolverines (0-2) by 29 points.
Coach Frizzell was able to take out his starters midway in the second half to get them rested up for Friday's showdown at #25 Oregon State (0-0). Also, it gave Coach Frizzell his first look at the bench for an extended period of time.
"[The bench] looked pretty good out there," stated Coach Frizzell. "I was glad we played so well because I really wanted to see how this bench would play and they pleased me. We have a fairly deep team and depth is always a good thing."
Ronny Gregory led the Dons with 18 points and shot 7-10 from the field, including 4-6 from dowtown. Matt Owen also had a nice game as he scored 13 points. Clement Patterson also added 8 points and 5 rebounds coming off the bench.
Utah Valley State was led by Florentino Shelton, who nearly got a double-double with 12 points and 8 rebounds. Shelton was the only Wolverine to get into double-figures.
The Dons will have two days to rest up before traveling up north to take on #25 Oregon State (0-0) on Friday. "This will be a huge game to determine where we stand among the elite," explained Coach Frizzell. "We've played a couple of warmup games so far, so now it's time for us to see how we stack up against the big boys." The game at Oregon State will be USF's first road game of the season.Comment

Re: Coaching Legacy of James Frizzell (CH 2K8)
whats your team's overall rating? id presume 82 or 83 which is great to start with a program like thisComment
-
Re: Coaching Legacy of James Frizzell (CH 2K8)
You would be correct, an 82 rating. Our 82 rating is mid-tier in the WCC, but I still think this year's team can compete for the WCC Title. There's a nice blend of talents. Our youth may end up hurting our chances in the end, though.Comment
