Yes, it's good to be back!

Seeing some of the first college basketball games of the season over the last week made me want to fire this thing back up again.

This year has been tough and the last game was especially tough as I was very rusty. I'm turning the ball over way too much right now and I think a lot of it is due to not playing this game for several months.

I made the sliders tougher prior to the season and that seems to be playing dividends as it has made things much tougher on my team. I wish I would have had harder sliders back in the first few years with Princeton as I probably got too good, too fast, but oh well. I can't change it now.

Los Angeles, CA (AP) - The San Francisco Dons (14-12, 3-6 WCC) continued their recent slide tonight, this time losing 69-59 to the Loyola Marymount Lions (15-7, 4-4 WCC).

The Dons turned shot 31% from the floor and turned the ball over 17 times. In addition, USF shot 4-27 (15%) from three point range.

"We played ugly out there tonight. Quite frankly, I'm shocked we kept it as close as we did," stated Coach Frizzell. "We couldn't shot worth a darn and we kept turning the ball over. I don't know what has gone wrong with this team lately, but something is not gelling.

This marks the Dons' fifth loss in their last six games.

The lone bright spot on an otherwise dark night was small forward Walter Proffitt's first-career double-double. The junior tallied 11 points and a career-high 11 rebounds. Matt Owen also had a decent night, tallying 16 points, but he turned the ball over five times, as well.

The Dons will have to win four of their last five games in order to salvage a .500 WCC record. The Dons schedule consists of a top 15 Gonzaga team and every other opponent currently has a winning record, so that looks like a tall order at this point.

Malibu, CA (AP) - The San Francisco Dons (15-12, 4-6 WCC) got back on track this evening against the Pepperdine Waves (14-11, 3-7 WCC). The Dons jumped out to an early lead and led 38-23 at halftime on their way tp a dominating 82-55 blowout victory over the Waves.

"We played very well tonight, which was a welcome change," stated Coach Frizzell. "This is the kind of basketball I expect this team to play every night. We came into a hostile environment on the road and inflicted our will upon our opponents. That's Dons basketball!"

The most notable difference between this game and the Dons' past few losses was the amount of turnovers. USF only turned the ball over nine times in this game and it paid off.

Freshman point guard Matt Owen, who had been responsible for many of those turnovers over the past few games, was very good in this department this evening. Despite not having a good night shooting the ball, Owen dished out 7 assists and did not turn the ball over a single time.

"That's what I want to see out of him," stated Coach Frizzell. "Sometimes he threads the needle more than I'd like him to and that leads to turnovers. He did a nice job of playing within his game and working the basketball around tonight. He wasn't stellar shooting the basketball, but I'd rather him miss shots than turn the ball over. At least you have a chance to score when shooting. There is a 0% chance of scoring when you give the other team the basketball."

Freshman power forward Bernard Mendoza had the best game of his carer tonight. Mendoza scored a career-high 20 points (his previous career-high was 16) and grabbed a career-high 11 rebounds (his previous career-high was 10) for the first double-double of his career.

"[Mendoza] was known mostly as a shooter when he came here this offseason," stated Coach Frizzell, "but he's done a nice job of developing an inside game and it showed out there tonight. He was also a beast on the boards."

Walter Proffitt also turned in a nice performance for the Dons, as did Ronny Gregory. Proffitt tallied 20 points, 5 rebounds, and 4 steals while Gregory hit five three-point shots to end with 17 points and 3 rebounds.

        Bernard Mendoza, PF: 20 points (10-14, 0-1), 11 rebounds

        Pepperdine Player Statistics
        Branduinn Douthit, PG: 11 points (4-16, 1-10), 6 assists

Spokane, WA (AP) - The #11 Gonzaga Bulldogs (22-5, 9-2 WCC) went into halftime faced with a surprising 31-28 deficit against the San Francisco Dons (15-13, 4-7 WCC). However, like they almost always do, the Zags rallied in the second-half and outscored the Dons 41-28 in the final frame to win 69-59 in Spokane.

"There's a reason why they're the #11-team in the nation," stated USF coach James Frizzell following the game. "We played well tonight to be up at halftime against the Bulldogs at their place, but it just wasn't to be, I guess."

The San Francisco Dons, by all accounts, played well, especially on defense. However, it's tough to compete with Gonzaga for a full 40 minutes and the USF players were clearly gassed towards the end of the game. It was a virtual tie with 7:50 remaining in the game, but by the 5:00 mark, the Zags had built up a 10-point lead and would cruise to a victory from there.

Senior shooting guard Pervis Franklin led the way for the Zags with 20 points and 3 steals while senior power forward Bryan Perry tallied a double-double with 16 points and 13 rebounds. Lenzie Boythe just missed a double-double as the sophomore added 9 points and 10 rebounds.

Bernard Mendoza had another good game for the Dons as he had a team-high 11 points to go along with 3 boards. Matt Owen was the only other USF player in double-figures as he totaled 11 points, 3 assists, and 3 steals.

The USF Dons play Santa Santa Clara (13-13, 3-7 WCC) in seven days in what will be the final home game for the USF seniors. "I'd like nothing more than to send our seniors out with a win on Senior Night," stated Coach Frizzell.

Seniors Ronny Gregory, Dallas Asseo, and Galen Pettway will be honored on Senior Night for their efforts over the course of their careers.

San Francisco, CA (AP) - The San Francisco Dons (16-13, 5-7 WCC) sent their seniors off with a win in their final home game as the Dons defeated the Santa Clara Broncos (14-14, 4-8 WCC) 72-62 on Senior Night.

"This is a great win for our seniors," stated Coach Frizzell. "We really came out ready to play and really turned it up a notch in the second half," stated Coach Frizzell.

After losing five of six games, the Dons have now won two of their last three and the lone loss was a close loss to a top-10 Gonzaga team.

Walter Proffitt had great game. The junior small forward scored 28 points, just two points short of his career-high of 30 points. He also grabbed 5 rebounds and shot 10-18 from the floor.

Matt Owen chipped in with 16 points, 5 rebounds, and 4 assists.

Senior Galen Pettway had a decent game in his final home game, scoring 6 points and grabbing a couple rebounds. Senior shooting guard Ronny Gregory struggled, shooting only 2-8 from the floor and scoring 6 points, while senior backup point guard Dallas Asseo was scoreless in his final home game, but did tally 2 assists and 2 rebounds.

The key difference in the game was the turnover department, a stat in which USF struggled with earlier this season. The Dons turned the ball only 10 times while they forced Santa Clara into 18 turnovers and that ultimately decided the 10-point ball game.

Moraga, CA (AP) - The San Francisco Dons (17-13, 6-7 WCC) had to come from behind to win their second consecutive game this evening against the Saint Mary's Gaels (16-11, 7-6 WCC).

The Dons faced a 12-point halftime deficit, but a 55-point offensive explosion in the second half by the Dons led to an 85-79 USF victory to move the Dons to 6-7 in WCC play.

"We're really starting to gel and get into a rhythm now," explained Coach Frizzell. "And this is when you want to do it. Our team is looking good heading into the postseason and that's when you want to be at your best."

Fantastic performances by Ronny Gregory and Walter Proffitt were instrumental in the Dons' victory tonight. Proffitt had a game-high 26 points - his second-stright 25+ point game - while shooting 8-19 from the field and 5-12 from downtown. Gregory scored 22 points - one-point short of his career-high of 23 points - and shot 8-14 overall and 6-11 from three-point range.

Matt Owen also had a fantastic game as he boasted a double-double, tallying 16 points and 10 assists. Clement Patterson also chipped in with 10 points, 4 rebounds, and 6 steals.

The three-pointer was very important to the Dons' success tonight. USF attempted 37 three-pointers in 62 shot attempts, meaning 60% of USF's shot attempts were from downtown. And the Dons didn't just shoot them; they nailed a considerable amount of them. USF nailed 16 of their three-point attempts, giving them a mark of 43% three-point shooting for the game. Overall, USF shot 44% and the Dons shot 15-17 (88%) from the free-throw line.

"The shots were falling in tonight and we just kept feeding it to the hot hand," commented Coach Frizzell. "I love to have an effective three-point shooting game because it keeps the defense on their toes and then we can throw it inside and get some easy layups."

The Dons close out the regular season against the San Diego Toreros (19-9, 8-5 WCC) on Monday. San Diego is looking at a potential NCAA Tournament berth and a loss to USF would hurt their chances. USF would like to end their season on a winning note and improve their WCC record to 7-7 to end the season.

San Diego, CA (AP) - The San Diego Toreros (20-9, 9-5 WCC) finished their season up on a winning note this evening as they handed the San Francisco Dons (17-14, 6-8 WCC) their 14th loss of the season. With the victory, the Toreros have now won 20 games this season and could be looking at a potential NCAA Tournament at-large berth.

The Dons kept it close early, only trailing 28-23 at halftime, but the Toreros turned it up a few notches in the second half as they outscored the Dons 41-29 on their way to a comfortable 69-52 victory.

"We played them tough early, but they just had too much talent and wore us down as the game went on," explained Coach Frizzell.

Junior power forward Bart Singleton was instrumental to the Toreros success in this one as he tallied 16 points and a career-high 15 rebounds. Everest Buggs added 16 points and four three-pointers for San Diego, as well.

Matt Owen led the Dons in scoring, but only shot 4-15 forom the floor and 1-8 from three-point range. Ronny Gregory was the only other USF player to score in double-figures as he tallied 10 points.

The Dons had a terrible shooting night as the San Diego defense bottled them up all game long. The Dons shot 18-68 (26%) from the floor and 7-27 (26%) from three-point range. The only saving grace for the Dons was the fact that they only turned the ball over eight times and nailed nine of 10 free throw attempts.

"We certainly had an off-night shooting the basketball," stated Coach Frizzell. "[San Diego] played great defense and that had a lot to do with our struggles, but even when we did get open looks, we still couldn't hit shots consistently. It was just one of those nights, I guess."

The Dons end the regular season with a 17-14 (6-8 WCC) record. The Dons would like to win a few WCC Tournament games to hopefully play their way into the NIT.

San Diego, CA (AP) - The 2017 WCC Tournament Bracket is set. The pre-season favorite Gonzaga Bulldogs, who went 12-2 in WCC play, grab the tournament's #1 seed.

The San Francisco Dons grab the tournament's #6 seed and will face off against the third-seeded Saint Mary's Gaels. While the Gaels had the better overall season, the Dons swept the Gaels in their two meetings this season. The Dons won their first meeting in San Francisco 68-63 in overtime and won their last meeting in Morango, CA 85-79.

"I think we got a good draw," stated Coach Frizzell. "We've had success against the Gaels this season and I feel good about the game.

If the Dons advance to the second round, they will play the winner of the San Diego/Pepperdine game.

San Diego, CA (AP) - The San Francisco Dons (18-14, 6-8 WCC) advanced to the second round of the WCC Tournament in stunning fashion as the Dons shot 55% from the floor and 18-36 from three-point range to eclipse the century mark against the Saint Mary's Gaels (17-12, 8-6 WCC).

Two USF players had career nights and you may have never heard of one of them. We've all heard of Walter Proffitt and the impact he's had on this Dons team this season. Proffitt stepped up in a huge way tonight as he willed the Dons to victory, scoring a career-high 40 points to go along with 6 rebounds and 4 assists.

The other USF player to eclipse the 20-point mark was Dallas Asseo. Who? Dallas Asseo, the senior backup point guard that averages 1.9 points and 11 minutes per game. Asseo came into the game hitting only 4 of his 18 three-point attempts on the season, but that all changed tonight. The senior came out and drained two three-pointers in his first two attempts and just kept on shooting them - and draining them - all night. By the game's end, Asseo had scored a career-high 21 points and drained 7 of 9 three-point attempts. Asseo also contributed in the assists department during his 21 minutes in the game as he dished out a career-high 7 assists. He also totaled 4 steals.

"I was screaming from the bench when [Dallas Asseo] shot those first two three-pointers," explained Coach Frizzell, "but he just kept on nailing them. Eventually, I just gave him the green light as he was having by far the best game of his career tonight. I guess he was playing what would have potentially been the last game of his career if we had lost today and he willed us to victory."

Defensively, the stats weren't so fantastic for the Dons, however. Saint Mary's shot 52% from the field and made 16 of 19 free throws.

"We really started to slack off in the second-half once we got a huge lead," stated Coach Frizzell. "We weren't playing very good defense in the first place, but the defense was just flat-out bad there in the second-half. Our guys gave a poor effort there and it allowed [Saint Mary's] to hang around for most of the game until we pulled away in the last four minutes of play."

The Gaels fall to 17-12 on the season and will hope to get an invite to the NIT next week.

Yes, I'm hoping to at least make it to the conference finals to hopefully ensure getting an NIT bid. Oh course, if I make it that far, then I hope I just win the whole tournament and make it to the Big Dance!

San Diego, CA (AP) - The San Francisco Dons (19-14, 6-8 WCC) upset the heavily-favored San Diego Toreros (21-10, 9-5 WCC) 74-72 this afternoon as the Dons will advance to the WCC Conference Championship Game next week against the winner of the Gonzaga/Portland game.

The Dons trailed 72-71 with 50 seconds remaining before senior point guard Dallas Asseo hit a huge three-pointer to put the Dons ahead 74-72. San Diego had a chance to tie it or win the game with a three-pointer, but their shot fell short as the clock expired and the Dons walked away with a huge win, their 19th victory of the season.

"This is a huge victory for us," stated Coach Frizzell. "We were 0-2 against the Toreros during the regular season and this was a huge lift for us to upset them here. It certainly gives us a lot of confidence going into the Championship Game against Gonzaga or Portland next week."

The Dons were lewd by Ronny Gregory's 15 points and 3 rebounds. Gregory hit five three-pointers in the game. Clement Patterson also had a huge game down low as he nearly tallied a double-double. He ended with 11 points and 9 rebounds.

The Toros were essentially a one-man show today as senior shooting guard Everest Buggs exploded for 27 points, including seven makes from three-point range. Unfortunately for San Diego, it was not enough to pull out a victory.
