Norman, OK - The San Francisco Dons (1-0, 0-0 WCC) started their season off on a good note this evening as they defeated the Kansas Jayhawks (0-1, 0-0 Big 12) 72-60 to earn a spot to play against Prairie View A&M tomorrow for a chance to play in the 2K Sports College Hoops Classic Finals in Madison Square Garden.

The Dons came out firing early and snatched a 31-23 halftime advantage. The Dons would build on that somewhat in the second half, though the Jayhaks managed to hang around a bit before eventually losing by a dozen points to the #21 team in America.

The Dons were led by newcomer Oliver Hudson. The freshman small forward sank 5 of 9 shots on his way to 16 points, 5 rebounds, and 3 steals. Matt Owen also had a solid game with 15 points, 3 assists, and 3 steals.

Owen Kole managed to tally a double-double with 12 points, 11 rebounds, 5 assists, 4 steals, and 2 blocks, but he only hit 5 of his 16 shot attempts.

Bud Thomas came off the bench for the Dons to score 11 points as he hit all four of his shot attempts and went 3 for 3 from downtown. Thomas was expected to be a great three-point shooter and he lived up to that billing tonight.

The Dons' other freshman, Lawrence Doumbouya, came in during scrap time to hit a three-pointer as he ended with 3 points.

"I really liked what I saw out of our freshmen tonight," stated Coach Frizzell. "They played with poise out there and should really help improve the depth of our team this year."

Prairie View A&M (1-0, 0-0 SWAC) defeated the Brown Bears (0-1, 0-0 Ivy) 75-60 to earn a spot to play the Dons for a chance to advance to the 2K Sports College Hoops Classic Final Four in Madison Square Garden next week.

Well at least you're now the 5th active coach to take 2 teams to the Final Four. Looks like your squad is off to a good start. By the way you forgot to change your record in the box score of the last game, didn't want your tracking to be off all season so I thought I would bring it up.

How's your team feel this year? I know it's still VERY early, but after two games I would think you have a good idea where they are in relations to last year's squad.

Nice opening wins. Not very often that you face a Kansas team that is unranked.

I fixed the record. Thanks for pointing that out.

I think this team is probably better, but I'm not quite sure yet. Walter Proffitt was a big loss, but I feel like Oliver Hudson and my other new freshman should be able to replace him fine and everyone else has improved to some degree. Plus, my new recruits are very good three-point shooters, which is huge to this team.

Yeah, Kansas was actually rated a few points worse than me.

San Francisco, CA - The #21 San Francisco Dons (3-0, 0-0 WCC) played in their home opener this Saturday afternoon as they defeated the Cal Poly Mustangs (1-1) 85-75. However, it wasn't easy.

After relatively cruising through their first two games against Kansas and Prairie View A&M, the Dons struggled mightily against the Cal Poly Mustangs, particularly in the early stages of the game. The Mustangs seized a 14-2 lead early on and the Dons only had four points on the board eight minutes into the game.

The Dons began to pick it up some thereafter, but USF still struggled and trailed 35-28 at the break.

Early in the second half, the Dons' struggles continued. However, as they half drug on, the Dons began to assert themselves as the superior team. Oliver Hudson, who struggled shooting early on, began to pick up his play in the second half as he ended with 21 points and 9 rebounds. Likewise, Owen Kole couldn't hit the broad side of a bard in the first half as he went 1-9 shooting, but he did begin to pick up his play in the second half. Kole ended with 16 points, 7 rebounds, and 6 huge assists.

In the end, the Dons offensive firepower overcame the Mustangs with about five minutes remaining in the game. The Mustangs began to foul with a minute remaining, which drove the USF lead to 10 when the final buzzer sounded.

"We really played awful in the first half," explained Coach Frizzell, "but fortunately we were able to pick it up in the second half to avoid embarrassment."

The Dons will next take on the Harvard Crimson (3-1, 0-0 Ivy) in Madison Square Garden on Thursday, November 15th in the semifinals of the 2K Sports College Hoops Classic.

New York, NY - The #21 San Francisco Dons (4-0, 0-0 WCC) narrowly escaped from New York with a victory in the 2K Sports College Hoops Classic semifinals as the Harvard Crimson (3-2, 0-0 Ivy) gave the Dons all they could handle.

In the end, after a hard back-and-forth battle, the Dons were able to hit some key shots to sneak away with a three-point victory.

Sophomore center Owen Kole was instrumental in the Dons' late run. Kole scored 24 points and snatched 6 rebounds in the victory and 7 of those points came in the final two minutes of the game.

San Francisco faced enormous struggles from beyond he arc. The Dons lofted up 31 three-point attempts. Only five of those attempts went through the basket, equating to a measly 16% shooting percentage from three-point range.

"We were getting good looks, but we just couldn't knock them down for some reason," explained Coach Frizzell. "I told our guys to just keep on jacking them up because I figured we could shoot our way out of the slump, but I guess not."

Some of the notable performances from beyond he arc include Matt Owen's 0-4, Jason Redick's 2-9, Jaime Barton's 1-5, and Bud Thomas' 0-4.

Fortunately for the Dons, they were excellent at the free throw line, where they drilled 18 of 19 free throw attempts, including 8 of 8 by Owen Kole.

In addition, the Dons forced 18 Harvard turnovers while only committing 10 turnovers of their own.

Thus, despite being outshot by Harvard 49% to 36% from the floor, the Dons were still able to escape with a narrow hard-fought victory.

With the win, the Dons have now started 4-0 this year and despite ugly play at times, have lived up to their billing as the #21 team in the land.

"We haven't won impressively in a couple of our games, but we've won and that's the most important thing," explained Coach Frizzell. "That said, we do need to pick up our play at some point or we'll be adding a loss to our record soon.

The Dons will face off against the Akron Zips (3-1) in the 2K Sports College Hoops Classic Championship Game. The Zips defeated the South Carolina Gamecocks (2-1) 76-55 in the semifinals. The Gamecocks will take on Harvard in the Consolation Game.

Yes, they have been. I made some significant slider adjustments before this season, although that shouldn't have any bearing on my horrible three-point shooting as I left that slider at 46 where I had it before.

I'll post my slider changes once I finally get settled with what I want to stick with. The main reason for the adjustments were because it was getting really easy to drive the ball and to score in the post and I felt like I needed to do something about it. I'm pleased with the adjustments thus far.

I should be able to beat Akron, but after these last two games, I'm not so sure. I need to start shooting better.

New York, NY - The #21 San Francisco Dons (5-0, 0-0 WCC) remained undefeated and won the 2K Sports College Hoops Classic Title tonight, but they did so much the skin of their teeth. The Dons fell behind 25-14 early against a pesky Akron Zips (3-2) team and trailed through much of the second half, as well.

It would take the heroics of Jason Redick to deliver a Dons victory as Redick hit a go-ahead three-pointer with 53 seconds remaining, which put the Dons up two for good.

Redick came into the game only shooting 38% from the floor and 32% from three-point range, but that changed in a big way tonight. Redick hit 7 of his 11 three-point attempts and shot 8 for 13 overall from the floor. He ended with 24 points, 4 rebounds, and 3 steals.

                        Overall, the Dons shot 13 of 36 (36%) from three-point range and 28 of 63 (44%) overall.

Akron had a chance to tie the game with time expiring, but Bernard Mendoza came up with a huge play as he blocked a 15-foot jump shot and sealed a Dons victory.

Lucian Zachery came up huge in this one for the Zips. The junior shooting guard came in only averaged 13.5 points per game, but tonight he seemingly couldn't miss. Zachery scored 35 points on 12-18 shooting, which shatters his old career-high of 25 points. In addition, he collected 3 rebounds and tallied 3 steals. Fortunately for the Dons, it was more or less a one man show as Levi Borges was the only other Zip who scored more than 7 points.

"We've been fortunate to win these last three ball games, but a win is a win and we are taking home the hardware," Coach Frizzell beamed as his team has cutting down the Nets in Madison Square Garden. "We've had our struggles, but we're 5-0, so it's hard to complain too much."

In the Third Place Consolation Game of the 2K Sports College Hoops Classic, the South Carolina Gamecocks defeated the Harvard Crimson 61-50.

Tomorrow, the Dons will head Queens, NY to take on the St. John's Red Storm.

Queens, NY - Threes were raining down tonight as the #21 San Francisco Dons (6-0, 0-0 WCC) stayed unbeaten by drilling 18 three-pointers in an 81-69 road victory over the St. John's Red Storm (1-2).

The Dons shot 18 for 38 from three-point range, equating to a percentage of 47%. 18 of San Francisco's 26 field goals came from beyond the arc. In fact, the Dons shot significantly better from behind the arc then from two-point range. The Dons shot a putrid 32% from inside the arc compared to 47% from downtown.

Jason Redick was the chief assassin from downtown as he had a great game, scoring 21 points to go along with 3 rebounds and 4 assists. He drilled 7 three-pointers in 14 attempts. Bud Thomas tallied 12 points off four three-pointers while Jaime Barton ended with 11 points and shot 3 for 4 from downtown.

Owen Kole did not hit a three tonight for the Dons, but he still managed to have a solid outing as he racked up 14 points, 12 rebounds, and a pair of blocks.

The Dons led the Red Storm for the better part of the night, though St. John's did keep it close until the closing minutes, when the Dons hit several three-pointers to build a 16-point lead and effectively put the game out of reach.

Senior small forward Arnaud Hite led the Red Storm with 20 points and 7 rebounds. Hite was a pain for his defenders to guard as Hite is 6'10" tall and weighs in at a hefty 259 lbs., which is quite large for a small forward.

"He's a beast," is all Coach Frizzell had to say about Hite.

The Dons return home and host the UC Davis Aggies on November 21st.

San Francisco, CA - The winless UC Davis Aggies (0-6, 0-0 Big West) were said to be one of the worst teams in all of college basketball going into this game and they lived up to that billing this evening. The Aggies were pounded into the ground by the undefeated San Francisco Dons (7-0, 0-0 WCC). The Dons jumped way out front early on and cruised the rest of the way on their way to an 86-60 victory.

With a 25-point halftime lead, Coach Frizzell had the luxury of playing his backups for the majority of the second half.

The Dons played well overall, shooting 55% from the floor and forcing 24 UC Davis turnovers. However, their three-point shooting and free throw shooting were subpar.

The Dons managed to make only 5 of their 23 three-point attempts in this one. Jason Redick and Matt Owen, who are normally the best two three-point shooters on the team, combined to go 0 of 8 from downtown.

In addition, the Dons struggled at the free throw line, where they only shot 57%, hitting 13 of their 23 attempts.

"Overall, we played well, but our three-point shooting and free throw shooting was a bit concerning," commented Coach Frizzell. "Overall, I'm not too worried, though. We played well definitively and forced UC Davis into a lot of turnovers, which provided some opportunities for easy fastbreak buckets."

The Dons had 24 fastbreak points in this game compared to only 6 for UC Davis, largely due to the face that the USF defense forced 24 Aggie turnovers.

The Dons were led by Owen Kole's double-double. Kole led the team in scoring, rebounding, and blocked shots as he totaled 19 points, 10 rebounds, and 4 blocks. Oliver Hudson also had a nice game as he added 16 points and 6 rebounds.

UC Davis was led in scoring by an unlikely candidate. Isma'il LEach, who came into the game only averaging 3.2 points in 5 minutes per game, came out firing on all cylinders tonight. The sophomore point guard hit 5 of his 6 three-point attempts to end with 15 points.

The Dons will host the South Carolina State Bulldogs on Sunday.

Yeah, one night we can't miss a shot and then another game we can't hit the broad side of a barn. And it's the same guys doing it. Jason Redick made 7 of 14 threes against St. John's, then followed it up with a 0-for-5 night. And it's been like this all season long.
