    Wooh go Maryland!

Your team is looking strong. Do you think you'll make a deep run in the Tourny like last year?

LOL coach, tell Mendoza to quit trying to get on ESPN and keep his rear in front of the arc. Redick seems to be shooting better of late, shot selection or mental?

I don't see it, but I didn't think we could make the Final Four last year and we did, so who knows? I just am not too high on this team. We've won a lot of games and only have three losses, but we've struggled against a lot of bad teams, even if we've ended up with a win in the end.

That would be neat. I need to schedule them in the regular season again. I played them the first year I was at USF, but I haven't scheduled them since. It's good to see them continuing to do well. They were 12-1 before they somehow managed to lose to Texas-Pan American.

LOL, Mendoza is a tough cookie to crack. He's an average three-point shooter, but he's open a lot being that he's a power forward, so it's tempting to shoot some balls from beyond the arc. He only shot 25-29% from beyond the arc in his first two years here, but he's actually shot decently lately. We'll see if that lasts, though. Sometimes, he'll have good games only to follow that up with a nice 0-for-5 game from beyond the arc.

Redick has just started to hit shots for some reason. I'm not sure if it's that I've just figured out his shot more or what, but the shots have started falling all of a sudden. It's good to see. Also, his rating has improved some this season.

Ratings-wise, my best shooter is Bud Thomas, but with him being a freshman, I haven't seemed to be able to figure out his shooting motion yet. He was lightning from downtown in the first two games of the season, but since then, he's been hit-or-miss, and more times than not, he's been missing much more than hitting.

              February 2nd, 2019

The San Francisco Dons (20-3, 6-0 WCC) won their 20th game of the season this afternoon as they blew out the San Diego Toreros (8-10, 3-3 WCC) 86-70. The Dons jumped out way ahead early on and never looked back as they cruised to an easy victory.

This gave the USF bench extended playing time as no started played over 20 minutes. Bernard Mendoza had one of the best games of his career this evening as he totaled 19 points and 5 rebounds and shot 8-for-11 from the field. Oliver Hudson was the only other Dons player in double-digits as he scored 14 points.

The Dons will host the Gonzaga Bulldogs on Monday. Gonzaga is 5-1 in conference play and whoever emerges victorious will have the inside route to the WCC Regular Season Title.

The San Francisco Dons (21-3, 7-0 WCC) took the WCC Title race by the horns this evening as they blew out the Gonzaga Bulldogs (15-8, 5-2 WCC) 99-77 to move to a perfect 7-0 record halfway through conference play. The Dons were on fire in the first half, shooting over 65% from the field, as they led 60-32 at the half. The Dons would cruise in the second half, leading by as many as 34 points, on their way to a 22-point win.

For the second straight game, Coach Frizzell got to rest his starters for the majority of the second half as Matt Owen was the only starter who logged more than 19 minutes of playing time.

Owen Kole led the Dons with 17 points, 8 rebounds, and 6 assists. Jason Redick scored 16 points and grabbed 5 boards. Mickey Eitutavicius came off the bench to score a career-high 12 pints for the Dons.

The Dons will hit the road next as they will travel to take on the Santa Clara Broncos on Saturday.

The San Francisco Dons' (21-4, 7-1 WCC) hope for an undefeated conference season came to a crashing halt this afternoon as the Dons flamed out against the Santa Clara Broncos (10-12, 4-4 WCC) 87-72.

The game was tied at halftime after Santa Clara managed to lead most of the first half, but the Dons built a lead in the second half, which eventually swelled to 8 points with five minutes remaining. Then Santa Clara awoke.

Trailing by 8, the Broncos suddenly started hitting everything while holding the Dons scoreless during the majority of the stretch. The Broncos also turned the Dons over many times. At halftime, USF had 1 turnover. By the time the final buzzer sounded, the Dons had turned the ball over 15 times, meaning that the Dons had 14 second-half turnovers. The Broncos eventually built an 18-point lead in the final 15 seconds before Matt Owen hit a three at the buzzer to make the final score 87-72.

Coach Frizzell wasn't pleased at all with his team's effort late in the second half. He said, "I can't believe how we managed to lose today. Clearly, it was a lack of effort because we obviously have superior talent. We just blew the doors off of the #2 team in the WCC on Monday then we come and lay a huge egg here in front of a sub-.500 team and lose by 15? That is ridiculous and shouldn't happen to a top 10 team. I know we won't be ranked ninth next week and we certainly don't deserve it to be. Just a piss-poor effort by our guys, especially on defense. I'm embarrassed.

"We're going to hit the practice floor all day tomorrow in preparation for a strong Portland squad on Monday."

The Broncos were led by the strong play of Jiri Zimmerman, who scored 28 points. Harris Hernandez scored a double-double for the Broncos as he totaled 15 points, 12 rebounds, and 3 steals.

The Dons are off tomorrow before traveling to Portland, Oregon to take on the Portland Pilots on Monday.

Ouch... away losses are sometimes expected, but never by double digits. Big loss for the Don's but I think Coach Frizzel can coach his team well enough to let it slide and get back to their winning ways.

It shocked me how I could blow out Gonzaga then follow that up with a double-digit loss to a bad team, but it happens sometimes, I guess.

Surprisingly, we remained at #9 in the AP Top 25 due to lots of other teams losing, as well.

The San Francisco Dons (22-4, 8-1 WCC) bounced back for their shocking loss to Santa Clara on Saturday as they beat the Portland Pilots (14-10, 3-6 WCC) 79-70 to win their eighth game in conference play, which gives them a two-game lead in the West Coast Conference Standings.

The Dons were led by Oliver Hudson, who totaled 20 points, 7 rebounds, and 4 steals this evening. He got to the line a career-high 15 times as he willingly drove to the hole and drew body contact to draw fouls.

Once again, this was a sloppy game. The Dons turned the ball over 19 times while the Pilots had 22 turnovers. Both teams had a lot of trouble holding onto the basketball as both defenses applied pressure. Fortunately for the Dons, they shot 26-for-49 (53%) from the field, which ultimately led to a USF victory.

The Dons will face off against the Loyola Marymount Lions later this week.

Rumors are swirling around that West Virginia head coach Bob Huggins may retire after this season has concluded. Huggins' Mountaineers struggled much of this decade, only making the NCAA Tournament twice (2010, 2018), but he managed to guide the Mountaineers to the Elite Eight as a #5 seed last year, where they fell to fellow conference member Seton Hall 82-71 in the East Regional Final.

Presently, the Mountaineers are tied for fifth in the Big East with a 6-5 conference record. The Mountaineers are 13-8 overall.

The Mountaineers were ranked fifth in this year's Preseason AP Top 25 Poll, but the Mountaineers have floundered down the stretch, losing four of their last five, their only victory coming against St. John's.

Coach Frizzell has made it no secret that he would like to coach in Morgantown, so it will be up to West Virginia Athletic Director Ed Pastilong to extend Frizzell and offer. There is little question that Frizzell would take the offer, if offered.

Frizzell commented about the situation, "Right now, we're focusing on winning the WCC. Yes, I'd love to coach at West Virginia, but we're not at that stage yet. Right now, I'm the head coach at San Francisco and we've got the inside track at our second-straight WCC Regular Season Title. That's what I'm focused on right now. We'll worry about job openings at the appropriate time, which is in the off-season."

Louisville's Rick Pitino has also hinted at retiring after the 2018-2019 season is complete.

I'm sure everyone is keeping their fingers crossed for the WVU job to open up for you. The Big East will certainly be a tough conference to play in. Good luck in your last 5 conference games, looking forward to another great March Madness tourney.
