Pittsburgh is going to be a tough out, for sure. I don't like our chances against them at all, to be honest.

EDIT: I was wrong. I totally overlooked the fact that, despite their high team rating, the have no size in their frontcourt.

        Houston, TX - Size matters.

That was the message sent by the San Francisco Dons (33-5, 11-3 WCC) as they punched a ticket to the Final Four in San Antonio by blowing out the #1-seeded Pittsburgh Panthers (31-6, 13-5 Big East) 77-53.

Pittsburgh had managed to have a very successful season all year despite their small-ball lineup, but it came back to haunt them tonight against a team with a dominant big man like Owen Kole. Pittsburgh's starting frontcourt went 6'3", 6'9", and 6'6" across the board.

Kole torched the Pitt defense early on with 17 first-half points. Once it was all said and done, he'd score 20 points to go along with 7 rebounds, 5 assists, and 3 steals in only 24 minutes of playing time. Pittsburgh had no answer for him down low, which forced the Panthers to double-team him. That opened up the three-pointer for the Dons and the barrage of threes carried the team from there, particularly in the second half.

Once it was all said and done, San Francisco hit 11 of 18 three-point attempts (61%) and shot 56% from the floor overall.

Matt Owen (3-3 3PT), Jason Redick (3-5 3PT), and Walter Proffitt (3-3 3PT) were huge from behind the three-point line and were instrumental in helping the Dons build an unsurmountable lead midway through the second half.

With the Dons holding a huge lead, Coach Frizzell had the opportunity to put in the backups who don't usually get the opportunity to play extended minutes in an NCAA Regional Final. But tonight they did as guys like Colin Soson (13 minutes) and Mickey Eitutavicius (9 minutes) got to play the entire last 10 minute of the ball game. During that period, USF briefly ran the score up to a 31-point lead, but the Panthers cut it to 24 points when the final buzzer sounded.

"We played great tonight," beamed Coach Frizzell as he and his teams cut down the nets in Houston. "We took advantage of mismatches and we executed very well. We have really stepped up our play since postseason play started. I always thought we had the talent to play this well, but we couldn't seem to put it all together until the WCC Tournament and it has carried over into the Big Dance."

The Dons will take on the #3-seeded Maryland Terrapins (27-8, 11-5 ACC) on Saturday, March 31st for a chance to play in the NCAA Title Game on April 2nd. The Terrapins blew out the #5-seeded USC Trojans 87-68 to win the Midwest Regional Final.

In other news, the #2-seeded Seton Hall Pirates defeated the #5-seeded West Virginia Mountaineers to win the East Regional. The Pirates will take on the only #1 seed left in the tournament, NC State, who knocked off #6 Wisconsin 87-83 in the West Regional Final. NC State and Seton Hall will take on either San Francisco or Maryland in the NCAA Title Game.

San Antonio, TX - For the second time in his career, Coach Frizzell made an appearance in the Final Four and for the second time his team failed to win a game once there.

The San Francisco Dons (33-6, 11-3 WCC) ran into a roadblock and were flat out embarrassed against the Maryland Terrapins (28-8, 11-5 ACC), who were on a tear shooting the basketball.

At the end of the first half, Maryland was shooting a scorching 76% from the floor and over 70% from three-point range. Maryland led 45-38, but it would have been much, much worse if the Terrapins did not turn the ball over 12 times.

The hot shooting for the Terps continued into the second half of the game, as well, though Maryland's shooting cooled off a bit in the final minutes. Maryland would end the game shooting 66% from the floor and 63% from downtown to go along with 18 turnovers.

"We tried all kinds of defenses and all kinds of sets, whether it be 1-3-1, 2-3, man-to-man, 3-2, and more, and none of it worked," said a frustrated Coach Frizzell. "They just hit shots and hit almost all of them especially in the first half. They were hitting open shots; they were hitting contested shots; they just couldn't miss. There wasn't a whole lot we could do out there tonight; it just wasn't our night."

San Francisco was not too shabby offensively themselves, but shooting 40% from the floor and 35% from three isn't going to do it against a team making almost two-thirds of their shots.

The Terrapins had many fantastic individual performances, but the best among them was shooting guard Slyvester Jimenez. Jimenez scored 27 points on 11-16 shooting and hit 5 of his 6 three-point attempts.

Owen Kole had a very nice game for the Dons in their losing effort. On the big stage, the Dons' star center scored 21 points and grabbed 9 boards. Senior small forward Walter Proffitt scored 13 points and snatched 4 rebounds in his final game as a USF player while Matt Owen managed to tally 14 points, 6 assists, and 4 steals.

"This may not be the way we wanted to go out, but this was still a very successful season for this program," said Coach Frizzell. "We played well for most of the season and won 33 games. We won our conference's regular season championship and won the postseason tournament. We got to the Final Four. There is no shame in this; this was a great season for USF Dons basketball. Sure, we wanted to win this game and not lose by 16 points, but we can still hold our heads high and walk away with a smile on our faces knowing that we gave it our all."

                    PLAYERS LEAVING:

The Dons had five players leave the team this offseaosn, though only one of them, Walter Proffitt, was a significant contributor. Walter Proffitt, Clement Patterson, Matas Hickman, and Colin Soson all left due to a lack of playing time. Junior shooting guard Cary Bowden left the team due to a lack of playing time.

Walter Proffitt led the team in scoring in the 2016-2017 campaign, though he slumped a bit this past season, slipping to third in scoring and only 41% shooting.

Clement Patterson started at center last year for the Dons and averaged 7.3 points and 5.8 rebounds per game. However, his job was taken by stud freshman center Owen Kole. Patterson's numbers dropped dramatically this year due to less playing time and less confidence in his ability.

Matas Hickman did not make many significant contributions over the course of his career, but he did manage a career-high 8.2 minutes per game this past season and made some decent plays in that stretch. He never developed a jump shot, but he had some ability to slash and get to the line.

Colin Soson walked on last season as a junior when Coach Frizzell became head coach. He averaged 10.6 minutes per game last season, but only 5.6 minutes this season. He never made any huge contributions, but he did make some solid plays over the course of his career.

Cary Bowden was a junior on this team who hardly ever saw the floor on this team. He only averaged 4 minutes per game over the course of his career and Coach Frizzell found little use for him since he never developed a jump shot. Bowden was knock for having a poor attitude and because of his frustration of his lack of playing time, he left the team this offseason.

                      2018 Recruiting Class

San Francisco, CA - Coach Frizzell stayed local in this year's recruiting as all four of his recruits hailed from California and it payed off. Coach Frizzell brought in the #13 recruiting class in the country and the #1 recruiting class in the West Coast Conference.

This year's class is highlighted by the #9 small forward in the nation, Oliver Hudson, who was the #32 overall player in this year's recruiting class.

All four of Coach Frizzell's recruits are good shooters and that is why he went after them.

"I really like to center my team around shooting the three-pointer. Last season, we struggled a bit at times shooting from deep, so I felt that it was necessary to help shore up this weakness this year and I feel like this class should accomplish that."

Last year's team also suffered from a lack of bench depth, which Coach Frizzell hopes this recruiting class should solve.

Tough loss to the the Terps..

I didn't get my dream matchup

So curious. Did you get any interesting job offers? What is Owen's and Kole's current draft status. Kole looks like he could be gone after this year if he puts up those type of #'s again..

Congrats on signing Hudson. Looks like he should be able to replace Proffitt starting day 1 and you definetly upgraded the rest of your bench with some solid size.

How many scholly's this year 2 or 3?? I assume you will be looking for a PG to replace Barton and be a potential replacement for Owen but I would think BIG MAN would be your #1 priority to have ready of Kole bolts for the pro's.

Tough loss to Maryland, but they did end up being the national champs. I don't think the selection committee realized they should've been a 1 seed, not a 3. I think this coming up year will be just like this season, if not better. Good luck!!

I didn't get my dream matchup
                              Nope.

The DePaul job was open, but I wasn't the top candidate for some reason. The head coaching position at St. Louis was open in the A-10; that was probably the #1 job open last season, so there wasn't a whole lot of movement among the upper echelon of teams.

Matt Owen is "First Round". Owen Kole is "Lottery". I think they'll both be gone after this season, unfortunately.

I really like Hudson. He looks like he could be a good one for us.

I only have on scholarship available this year. I have a lot of guys with high interest, too, which is a shame. Yeah, I probably should have recruited some big men this past season, but I overlooked it. I definitely need to get a couple of them. Like you said, I'll need some guards, too, most likely.

I think we do have a better team this year and have better shooters. I feel like we overachieved in the NCAA Tournament with last year's team, so I'm not expecting a Final Four out of this team, but I think we should be able to win the WCC and hopefully make the Sweet Sixteen or so.

And we're ranked #21 in the preseason, which is nice to see.
