Tough loss. What happened to Redick not in the scoring column.

He shot 1-7 overall and 1-6 from downtown. He had a bad game, for sure.

I may do the scoring stats so that all the starters, plus key bench players, are listed next year instead of just the top performers like I do now.

EDIT: I'm going to start putting all the stats for the starters, plus any bench players that make significant contributions. I think this is a good idea and shouldn't add too much time to the amount of time it takes to work on the writeups.

Los Angeles, CA - The San Francisco Dons (26-5, 11-3 WCC) avenged Saturday's loss to Santa Clara as they blew out the Loyola Marymount Lions (17-12, 7-7 WCC) 91-70. The Lions kept it close early on, but San Francisco opened the second half on a 16-2 run to blow the game open and the Dons never looked back on their way to a 21-point victory to close out the regular season.

After just scoring 8 points and shooting just 1-6 from three-point range against Santa Clara, Jason Redick redeemed himself tonight as he rocked the house with 27 points and 3 rebounds as he drilled 5 of 7 shots from beyond he arc.

The game would have been even more out of hand if it were not for the fact that the Dons got a little lazy on defense in the second half and allowed Loyola Marymount to get to the line 29 times, which they converted into 23 points. However, the Lions only shot 35% from the floor in the game as thy had a very difficult time getting off any clean shots.

During the 16-2 run early in the second half, Coach Frizzell experimented with a triangle-and-two zone defense, which worked extremely well during that stretch of the game.

"I'd never tried the triangle-and-two defense before, but we've been working on it a bit in practice to give our opponents different looks," explained Coach Frizzell. "We run a lot of different defensive sets over the course of the game, so this could give us another defense to go to and help change things up for our opponents. I like to throw them a lot of different defensive looks."

Typically, USF has utilized primarily man-to-man, 2-3 zone, and 1-3-1 zone defenses this year, though some 2-1-2 and 3-2 zones have been used at times.

In addition to Jason Redick's solid performance, the Dons also got 19 points, 5 rebounds, and 3 blocks from Owen Kole. Matt Owen paced the offense with 12 points, 4 rebounds, and 5 assists while Walter Proffitt ended just one rebound shy of a double-double as he tallied 15 points and 9 boards.

The Dons, the #1 seed, will take on the Saint Mary's Gaels (9-20, 3-11 WCC), the #8 seed in the tournament, on Friday in the first round of the West Coast Conference Tournament. Two two teams have split their matchups this year with each team winning at their opponent's home floor. The Dons lost 78-65 in their first matchup of the year in San Francisco on January 15th while USF blew out Saint Mary's 76-46 in Moraga on February 10th.

I didn't realize the main thing that was going to suck about finally getting caught up and actually following your legacy.....I have to wait for results }:cP I'm looking forward to tourney time and seeing what kind of class you bring in after. I will admit though that I love the recruiting/building aspect of any game.

            2018 West Coast Conference Tournament
Site: Jenny Craig Pavilion, San Diego, CA

            Quarterfinals Matchups:
            (1) San Francisco vs. (8) Saint Mary's
            (4) San Diego vs. (5) Loyola Marymount
            (3) Gonzaga vs. (6) Pepperdine
            (2) Portland vs. (7) Santa Clara

San Diego, CA - The brackets are set and the Dons will be playing the Saint Mary's Gaels in the first round of the 2018 West Coast Conference Tournament, which will be held at the Jenny Craig Pavilion in San Diego, CA.

Normally, Saint Mary's would seem like a sure win for the Dons going off their 9-20 overall record and their 3-11 conference record. However, the Dons were upended by the Gales 78-65 at home back in mid-January. That said, the Dons demolished the Gaels by 30 points in mid-February, so San Francisco should get the win this time, as well.

The Dons will most likely take on the San Diego Toreros in the second round. The Dons destroyed San Diego 84-48 in their first matchup of the year in San Francisco, but San Diego got the last laugh with a 94-85 victory over the Dons in San Diego. The Dons would certainly be the favorite in that matchup, but the Toreros would certainly have a decent shot at knocking the top-seeded Dons off their lofty perch, especially if the Dons come in overconfident as they already have an at-large NCAA Tournament berth sealed up while San Diego (and every other team in the WCC Tournament) if fighting for their NCAA Tournament lives.

If the Dons win in the second round of the WCC Tournament, they will most likely take on either Portland or Gonzaga. The Dons are 4-0 versus Gonzaga and Portland combined this season.

I'll try to get in plenty of results for you to read this weekend!

I love the building and recruiting aspect, as well. I'm really excited about some of the recruits I look to be bringing in next year, so I'm ready to get to the offseason (though I'd like to win the NCAA Title first).

Yeah I've really enjoyed it and it has inspired me to do my own when NCAA 11 drops since I always build up a small school since I just dominate with the Gators and it gets stale. Here's to hoping for a coaching carousel like some have been asking for. Until then though I'll just stick to blogging.

In regards to the game, unfortunately I haven't been able to get my hands on 2K8, but I did have 2k7 and I've been playing that some. Recruiting can be a bitch in that version from what I have read and the sim engine got an overhaul for 08. There are a ton of times I lost good recruits that I was winning on out the gate and the only offer to up through the last week of late signing, only to lose in the end. Hope you don't suffer that same fate this year.

San Diego, CA - So much for any hopes of an upset. Instead, the #1-seeded San Francisco Dons (27-5, 11-3 WCC) sent out a statement to the rest of the WCC today as the Dons blasted the Saint Mary's Gaels (9-21, 3-11 WCC) from right out of the gate and advanced to the second round of the West Coast Conference Tournament. The Dons jumped out to a 22-8 lead early on and led by 35 points at halftime as they grabbed a 49-14 lead going into the locker rooms. The Dons took their foot off the gas in the second half with the backups logging heavy minutes, but the Dons still walked away with an impressive 84-48 victory.

The Dons were led by Owen Kole's double-double. Kole totaled 24 points, 12 rebounds, 3 assists, and 5 steals in limited minutes as he just totally wore down the depleted Saint Mary's defense. Jason Redick struggled shooting the basketball as he shot only 1-6 from downtown, but he got to the basket several times end ended with 11 points and 5 assists. Jaime Barton came off the bench to drill four threes to end with 14 points and 3 assists while senior power forward Colin Soson scored a career-high 10 points in 13 minutes, breaking his previous career-high of 9 points.

With Loyola Marymount beating San Diego 74-73, the Dons will take on the Lions in the second round of the West Coast Conference Tournament tomorrow.

Yeah, hopefully dynasty and presentation in NCAA 11 improve over this year's iteration. That game has gotten stale in next-gen. I used to love EA's NCAA Football games back on the old Xbox, but it just hasn't been the same since the 360/PS3 came along, despite the eye candy of improved graphics.

That sucks you cannot get the game. I purchased my copy back in March 2008. I've heard that the game can be found in the big bins at Wal-Mart and such, but I imagine that it's getting harder and harder to find the game now as it climbs in age.

Sometimes recruits do slip through my fingers, but I don't feel like there's anything too buggy about it. However, as a small school can have someone at 100% only to be passed over by a power conference school, but I don't think that happens as much at the mid-major and power conference level.

I signed two three-star prospects in the fall signing period and have a four-star small forward at 100% and with the scholarship already offered. There's another school in pursuit of him, but they're a bit behind, so I think I should be able to sign him on day #1 of the spring signing period.

San Diego, CA - For the second straight game, the San Francisco Dons (28-5, 11-3 WCC) completely and utterly demolished their opponents. The San Francisco Dons jumped out to a 25-4 lead early in the first half and never looked back as USF went on to win 76-48 against the Loyola Marymount Lions (18-13, 7-7 WCC) in the semifinals of the West Coast Conference Tournament.

The Lions had no answer to Owen Kole down low, who owned the paint. The freshman center scored 25 points on the night and also grabbed 13 boards in addition to 3 assists. Matt Owen also put on a fine showing with 20 points and 3 steals. Jason Redick was the only other USF player to score in double-figures as he scored 10 points and collected 3 assists.

The Dons were especially impressive on the defensive side of the court tonight as the Dons held Loyola Marymount to only 34% shooting. In addition, the Lions shot only 2-19 (11%) from beyond the arc and only got the the free throw line once. In contrast, the Dons shot 44% from the field, 41% from downtown, and 15-18 from the charity stripe.

"We did a really good job out there tonight," commented Coach Frizzell. "We played hard; we executed well. We just did all the right things. Loyola Marymount is a good team, so I'm really impressed by how easily we handled them."

The #2-seeded Portland Pilots (18-12, 9-5 WCC) upended the #6-seeded Pepperdine Waves (15-17, 5-9 WCC) in the other semifinal matchup tonight, so the Dons will take on the Pilots tomorrow.

San Diego, CA - For the second time in as many years, Coach Frizzell and his San Francisco Dons (29-5, 11-3 WCC) won the West Coast Conference Tournament Championship over the Portland Pilots (18-13, 9-5 WCC) as they blew out the Pilots this year 94-71. Led by Matt Owen's 24 points, 3 assists, and 4 steals, the Dons turned a slim lead late in the second half and blossomed it into a 17-point rout at halftime. Last year, the Dons won a hard-fought 69-64 victory over the Pilots in the Title Game, but the game was by all means a rout this year.

Portland cut the lead to 13 points midway through the second half, but USF responded with a run of their own to eventually build a 29-point advantage in the closing minutes. When the final buzzer sounded, the Dons held a 23-point lead.

The key statistics in tonight's game were turnovers and points in the paint. Portland shot an even 50% from the floor, but the Pilots turned the ball over 19 times, which essentially negated their efficiency in shooting the basketball. On the contrary, the Dons shot 53% from the floor and only turned the ball over 9 times. In addition, the Dons dominated the paint as the Dons outscored Portland 56-32 in the painted area.

"We didn't play great field goal defense tonight, but we did a great job at forcing turnovers," beamed Coach Frizzell. "We also shot very well, which was great to see from our guys.

"I'm really proud of these kids and how they have persevered throughout the season. It's now culminated in a West Coast Conference Title. We've had a few bumps in the road, but we've clearly been the most dominant team in the WCC. We got a little sloppy late in the year, but we simply kicked butt and took names in the conference tournament and I hope we can continue our strong play into the Big Dance."

Coach Frizzell's statement about kicking butt and taking names couldn't be more accurate. In three conference tournament games, the Dons won 84-48, 76-48, and 94-71. Cumulatively, the Dons outscored their opponents 244-167 and won by an average score of 81-56.

Four of the Dons' five starters scored in double-figures in the game, with Walter Proffitt being the only exception. In addition to Matt Owen's 24 points, Owen Kole had a dominate game down low as he scored 16 points and grabbed 6 boards in only 21 minutes of action. He shot 8-10 from the floor.

"It was basically a guaranteed score everytime we fed him in the low block," remarked Coach Frizzell.

Jason Redick's hot streak continuted this evening, as well, as the sophomore guard continued to pour it on with 19 points and 3 steals.

The Dons will now sit back and await their NCAA Tournament seeding on Sunday, March 11th.
