EVANSVILLE, IN - The San Francisco Dons (7-1) powered their way to yet another win this evening against the Evansville Purple Aces (2-5). The Dons got off to a slow start and were tied at the half with the Purple Aces 34-34.

However, Walter Proffitt and Owen Kole helped power an offensive explosion in the second half as the two combined for 48 points to lead the Dons out to a 20-point advantage with 10 minutes remaining. Evansville made a huge run towards the end of the game, cutting the Dons lead to four points at one point, but Owen Kole's late free throws helped clinch the victory for the Dons.

Freshman Owen Kole tallied a career-high 28 points in this game to go along with 9 rebounds, 5 assists, and 2 blocks. This is Kole's first career game in which he failed to get a double-double, but it is arguably the best all-around game of his young career. Walter Proffitt was no slouch, either, as the senior small forward scored 20 points to go along with a trio of rebounds and steals. Matt Owen paced the offense with 12 points, 9 assists, and 5 steals while Bernard Mendoza ended with 10 points, 8 rebounds, and 3 steals, just two rebounds shy of a double-double.

The Dons will take on the Brigham Young Cougars on Thursday back in San Francisco.

    San Francisco Player Statistics

SAN FRANCISCO, CA - The San Francisco Dons (8-1) powered past an underachieving BYU Cougars (4-5) team with a strong second half performance in which the Dons outscored the Cougars 42-27. USF clung to a slim 34-31 lead at halftime, but the Dons showed why they were 7-1 coming into the game while BYU was 4-4 as Matt Owen, Walter Proffitt, and Owen Kole took over for the Dons.

The Big Three hit shot after shot for the Dons, and combined for 60 of the team's 76 points. Owen Kole led the way with 21 points, 10 rebounds, 4 assists, and 2 blocks. Matt Owen hit four huge three-pointers en route to a 20 point, 6 rebound performance. Walter Proffitt struggled shooting in the first half, but he found his touch in the second half as he erupted to score 19 points and grab 5 boards.

Sharpshooter Jason Redick also had a solid performance as he drilled three triples in an 11 point performance.

Coach Frizzell pulled the starters with a 20 point lead and three minutes remaining, which allowed lesser-used players to get some much needed playing time.

One thing that continues to be concerning about this team, however, is the lack of depth. While the Big Three are a great trio, outside of them, there aren't many scoring options. The depth was virtually nonexistant tonight, as backup point guard Jaime Bartons' 5 points is all the production that came off the bench. In the Dons' past game against Evansville, the bench only scored 4 points, and against TCU the bench scored only 8 points.

"It's definitely something we need to work on," explained Coach Frizzell. "We have a lot of youth on the bench.

"Back during my latter years at Princeton, we always had a very solid bench. You need someone to go to if your stars aren't contributing. We really don't have that now, but we've got what we've got and there's nothing we can do to change it except practice and get better."

The Dons are now off for five days before traveling to Honolulu, HI for the Hawaiian Island Classic at the Stan Sheriff Center. The Dons will take on the UTEP Miners in the first-round game.

HONOLULU, HI - The UTEP Miners (8-1) won their eighth game in a row this afternoon in Honolulu against a San Francisco (8-2) team that only had one loss to their resume. In a game broadcast nationally on ESPN, the Miners showed themselves to be a very strong team capable of an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament.

UTEP's only blemish is a six-point loss in its season opener against Arkansas (7-1). Since then, however, the Miners are 8-0, including a huge resume-building victory at #5 Villanova (11-1) by an 85-80 margin.

"I think we've showed that we're for real," stated UTEP head coach Murray Bartow. "We will be a force to be reckoned with in Conference USA."

Small Forward Romon Ager led the way for the Miners with 23 points, 3 rebounds, and 3 steals. Olu Salazar tallied 18 points and 3 assists while George Tamayo had a strong game down low with 10 points, 8 rebounds, and 3 assists.

Walter Proffitt led USF in scoring, but he was only 5-15 from the field and 5-9 from the free throw line. Owen Kole, however, had a really nice game with 16 points and 11 rebounds. He was 8-12 from the field, which makes you wonder why he didn't get more touches and chances to shoot the ball. Matt Owen was the only other Don in double-figures with 11 points, 3 rebounds, and 4 assists.

Coach Frizzell will match up against one of his former conference rivals on Friday as USF will take on the Columbia Lions in the loser's bracket of the Hawaiian Island Classic.

          UTEP Leaders
          Olu Salazar, SG: 18 points (7-16, 4-6), 3 assists
          Ramon Ager, SF: 23 points (9-18, 1-3), 3 rebounds, 3 steals
George Tamayo, PF: 10 points (4-9), 8 rebounds, 3 assists

          San Francisco Leaders
          Matt Owen, PG: 11 points (4-10, 3-7), 3 rebounds, 4 assists
          Jason Redick, SG: 9 points (3-11, 1-5)
          Walter Proffitt, SF: 18 points (5-15, 3-7), 4 rebounds

That was a tough loss against the Miners but other than that, your team seems to be rolling along pretty good.

Did you find the daily results in the xbox 360 version?

Would you care for me to follow the top 3 in scoring, rebounding and assists for WVa? I've already got Boise State and Duke on the block. I'll be posting them every 4 games of my schedule and put it in a post after my stats.

Yeah, UTEP was a tough team. But they're 9-1 and have some good wins, so it's nothing to be ashamed about.

Nope. I guess it was one of those things that they didn't add to the next gen versions. I remember the daily view being available in my first College Hoops 2K game on the Xbox (ESPN College Hoops 2K4). It sucks that they didn't add it to next gen. Oh well.

If it's not too much trouble, that would be cool, but I hate to make you do more work on your reports. It looks like you have enough typing to do as it is.

HONOLULU, HI - The neutral fans at the Stan Sheriff Center got their money's worth this afternoon in Honolulu. They may not have had a team to share for, but they had a memorable performance to behold. USF point guard Matt Owen put on a spectacular show for the neutral crowd, scoring 37 points on 12-19 shooting and dishing out 5 assists.

It seemed like Owen couldn't miss, specifically in the second half. Matt Owen scored 25 of his 37 points in the second half and was key in stretching the Dons' 33-32 halftime advantage into an 18-point blowout victory.

"That was one of the most memorable performances one of my players has ever put on," remarked Coach Frizzell following the game. "I've coached some spectacular players over the course of my career, but that was a good one right there that I'll always remember."

Matt Owen may have scored 37 of the team's 75 points, but he couldn't do it all alone. Owen Kole had a solid game down low, tallying 14 points, 8 boards, 3 assists, 3 steals, and a pair of blocks. Walter Proffitt also had a solid game with 11 points and 8 rebounds, just two shy of a double-double.

The Dons never trailed in this game and grabbed a huge 15-point lead in the first half, but a lackadaisical effort on the defensive end of the floor let the Lions back in it to get within a point at halftime. And once Matt Owen hit the gas pedal in the second half, this one was over.

"It felt like old times out there," beamed Coach Frizzell after being asked how it felt to beat one of Princeton's old conference foes.

The Dons will take on the New Mexico State Aggies in the fifth-place game of the Hawaiian Invitational tomorrow afternoon.

                Jamion Riley, SF: 17 points (6-10, 2-2), 3 steals

Good to see you back. The boards over at 2k have been dead for the past 3 weeks. So I started a new legacy and moved over here. Looking foward to seeing you continue this.

Yeah, there don't seem to be as many updates over there lately. I'll have to update my legacy over there, as well, as I'm a few games behind on posting over there.

Moraga, CA - The San Francisco Dons (12-2) jumped out to a huge lead early on and stomped all over the Florida A&M Rattlers (3-8) on the way to a 33-point romp, the Dons' biggest and most dominating win of the season.

Everyone played well for the Dons, but Owen Kole's effort stood out above the rest. The freshman dominated the game as he tallied 25 points, 11 rebounds, and 4 assists. He also was a monstrous force down low on the defensive end of the floor.

Matt Owen managed to total 18 points and 6 rebounds on 8-12 shooting in only 20 minutes of action as his time was playing time was cut considerably with the game well in hand in the second half. Jason Redick also had a nice game as he drained three treys on his way to 13 points and 4 rebounds. Jaime Barton came off the bench to tally 10 points and 5 assists.

"We just went out and played like we know how to play," stated Coach Frizzell. "We were very loose out there and just played basketball. We haven't blown out many people this year until today and it was good to finally accomplish that. I know that a win is a win, but a 33-point win always beats a four-point win in my book."

Moraga, CA - Owen Kole etched his name into the hearts of San Francisco Dons (13-2) fans tonight with his awesome 23 point performance punctuated by a huge game-winning shot with just 3.5 seconds remaining. The freshman center caught an assist from Matt Owen with the Dons down 79-78 to the Cal Poly Mustangs (8-2). Kole caught the pass, rose up with a man in his face from five feet out, and swished the shot. The Dons got back on defense and the Mustangs missed a prayer from 40 feet out as the Dons won their fifth straight game.

"That was an awesome shot by [Owen]," beamed Coach Frizzell after the game. "You just cannot ask for anything more from him. He's been great this year."

Kole tallied 23 points, 10 rebounds, 4 assists, and 4 steals.

The Dons trailed 43-40 at halftime, but made a nice run to lead by a fair margin most of the second half. A collapse in the final five minutes handed Cal Poly the lead, but fortunately Owen Kole came up big when it mattered and allowed the Dons to come away with a Shamrock Office Solutions Classic Championship.

Matt Owen finished with 16 points, 8 assists, and 5 steals. Walter Proffitt also had a great game, totaling 20 points and 7 rebounds on 8-12 shooting.

The Dons have a week off before taking on the Baylor Bears next Saturday.
