        2017 Recruiting Class

San Francisco, CA - This year's recruiting class is not as star-studded as Coach Frizzell's first class at USF, but it is certainly another solid class, coming in ranked 42nd nationally and third in the WCC behind Gonzaga and Saint Mary's.

Coach Frizzell successfully recruited locally, as he did last year, and has done so with great success. All eight of Coach Frizzell's recruits at USF are from the state of California. Two of this year's recruits are from within 30 minutes of the USF campus. The other, Lucas Kabba, is from Orange, CA, which is south of Los Angeles.

Owen Kole highlights this year's class for USF and is a huge pickup at the center position. He may have a chance to start from day one.

"I really liked what I saw from [Kole] when I scouted some of his high school and AAU games," commented Coach Frizzell. "He definitely has a place on this team and will be a huge help and a dominating force down low."

Coach Frizzell appears to be laying the foundation for building a national power at San Francisco.

How are you liking the game on that new HDTV of yours?

I haven't played a game yet, but just editing the rosters on it blew me away at how much better it looked.

I haven't played a full game on it yet, but from what I've seen, it looks like it'll be nice!

Posting the scores from the NCAA Tournament and the season statistics was a joy! It was nice to have it clear, crisp, and bright. On my old standard definition TV, the text could get really hard to read at times and would look blurry.

San Francisco, CA - The San Francisco Dons (1-0) opened up the 2017-2018 season on a high note this evening, picking up a solid 68-54 victory over the Creighton Blue Jays (0-1). The Dons got off to a quick start, claiming a 34-25 halftime lead and never looked back on the way to a 14-point victory.

Walter Proffitt was the difference maker for the USF Dons. Proffitt tallied 28 points, 6 rebounds, and 3 assists. Proffitt was deadly from beyond the arc, where he hit 6 of 12 shots.

Freshman starting center Owen Kole started his career off about as well as you could hope for. The freshman tallied a double-double with 18 points, 13 rebounds, and 4 assists.

"He's going to be a good one for us; that's for sure," beamed Coach Frizzell about Kole. "He's a dominating force in the middle for us and he is a key player on this team. At Princeton, we had Cassiand Swift and he left for the NBA after his junior year. At USF, we have Owen Kole and I expect the same out of him."

The Dons have two days off before another tune-up game against the Savannah State Tigers before travling to Corvallis, Oregon to take on the Oregon State Beavers.

San Francisco, CA - The San Francisco Dons (2-0) picked up their second victory of the season this evening against the Savannah State Tigers (0-2).

The Dons jumped out to a 39-14 lead at halftime and seemed to be cruising. The Dons were dominating on both the offensive and defensive ends and were in full control.

                  Then the second half happened.

The Tigers of Savannah State came out fired up and ready to play. Their offense was clicking and took USF by surprise. Coach Frizzell had inserted his backups early in the second half, but they had to be pulled when the Tigers got to within seven points midway through the second half.

The Dons rebounded and won by a comfortable margin, but this may shed some light on the Dons' bench, or lack thereof.

"Our bench is not the deepest and I knew that coming into the season," explained Coach Frizzell. "However, I really felt that they should have been able to maintain the lead we had at halftime. Instead, they gave up a ton of points on the defensive end and on the offensive end, they struggled scoring."

Owen Kole got some huge points late in the game to seal the victory for the Dons. Kole tallied 25 points, 13 rebounds, and 4 huge blocks. He also shot 9-10 from the free throw line.

Matt Owen chipped in 12 points and 5 assists in the victory while Walter Proffitt struggled shooting, but still managed 13 points, 7 rebounds, 4 steals, and a pair of blocks. Freshman walkon Mire Van also scored 9 points coming off the bench.

A major area of the concern for the Dons was in the turnover department. USF committed 18 huge turnovers, most of which occurred in the second half and allowed the Tigers to get back into the game. Savannah State applied the press most of the second half and USF couldn't handle it.

"You can bet we'll be working on breaking the press tomorrow in practice," blasted Coach Frizzell. "Today's performance was atrocious and it needs fixing before we take on Oregon State."

The Dons will have a day of practice tomorrow before traveling to take on the Oregon State Beavers on Friday.

Cornvallis, OR - The Oregon State Beavers (2-0) jumped ahead early and hung on to beat the San Francisco Dons (2-1) 81-73 this evening. The Beavers jumped out to an early lead and led by nine at halftime, but the Dons would make a run to make it close in the final minutes.

USF would get within a point in the final 10 minutes of play, but the Beavers would take control and gain a 5-8 points advantage for the rest of the game on their way to their second victory of the year.

"We came out and played well in a tough environment in Cornvallis," explained Coach Frizzell. "I would have loved to win the game, but this was a difficult one and it will help prepare this team for some of the tougher games ahead in the season."

The Dons were led by Matt Owen, who had his best game of the season with 18 points and 4 steals. Owen Kole also picked up his third double-double in three career games with a startling stat line of 16 points, 13 rebounds, 6 assists, and 4 steals while Walter Proffitt added 14 points.

The Beavers were led by Skip Lavender and Vidal Whithers. Lavender led the Beavers in scoring with 22 points and 6 rebounds while Whithers dominated the painted area with 20 points, 13 rebounds, and a pair of blocks.

The Dons will face another stiff test next week against the Washington State Cougars (2-0). However, it will be a home game for USF, so USF should have a better chance to win than they did this evening at Oregon State.

San Francisco, CA - The San Francisco Dons (3-1) handed the Washington State Cougars (4-1) their first loss of the season this evening in an upset that turned some eyes. The Cougars were 4-0 coming into the game and two of their wins were against WCC foes Gonzaga and Loyola Maramount, but they couldn't improve their record to 3-0 against the WCC this season as San Francisco handed them a painful 62-56 loss.

"This is certainly a great thing for our basketball program," beamed Coach Frizzell. "Beating a team like Washington State will look good on our tournament resume."

The Dons' balanced offense - four of USF's five starts scored 12 or more points - combined with a dominant defense, especially in the first half, ultimately resulted in a Dons victory.

Freshman center Owen Kole led the way with 18 points, 12 rebounds, and 3 key blocks. Walter Proffitt tallied 13 points and 3 rebounds while point guard Matt Owen had a very good game with 12 points, 5 rebounds, 6 assists, and 4 steals. Jason Redick finally scored in double-figures for the first time this season as he hit 4 of 6 from beyond the arc to score 12 points and grab 4 boards.

The Dons will take on Idaho on Sunday.

Moscow, ID - The San Francisco Dons (4-1) emerged from Moscow - no, not the city in Russia - victorious, but it wasn't easy as the Dons struggled mightily on offense, something they've done all season.

USF shot 37% from the field and went 4-21 from three-point range. Idaho (1-3) shot 41% from the field, but turned the ball over 17 times to USF's 11, which ultimately was the deciding factor in the ball game.

Idaho actually led 27-23 at halftime and USF was visibly rattled, playing in only their second road game of the season.

"Every shot seemed like it was a brick in the first half," said Coach Frizzell. "That was an ugly display of basketball and we were fortunate that we were only down by four points."

However, USF got a decent offensive game going in the second half to outscore Idaho 36-25 in the final 20 minutes of play. Jason Redick was key in the Dons' second-half run as the 6'4 shooting guard scored a career-high 13 points, 10 of which came in the second half. Redick also made some huge defensive plays, including 5 steals, which also marks a career-high for the sophomore.

Owen Kole continued to be a beast down low as he added 18 points and 13 rebounds. Kole has played in five career games and has five career double-doubles. He is averaging 19 points and 12.8 rebounds thus far this season.

Point guard Matt Owen also added 14 points and 3 assists in the victory.

The Dons have six days off now before taking on Louisiana Tech at home on Saturday, November 25th.

San Francisco, CA - The San Francisco Dons (5-1) finally put together a solid offensive performance this evening and it resulted in a 21-point blowout victory over the Louisiana Tech Bulldogs (3-3). The Dons shot 43% from the field and 12-27 from downtown in their 76-55 victory over Louisiana Tech while holding the Bulldogs to only 37% shooting.

"We hadn't been doing anything wrong schematically all season," explained Coach Frizzell. "Our guys had been doing what they needed to do an executing. We just couldn't hit our open shots in our first five games. Fortunately, that changed tonight as we looked good out there shooting the basketball."

The Dons got another dominating performance from Owen Kole down low as Kole tallied 17 points, 12 rebounds, and 3 steals. Kole is making a strong case for the best freshman center in the country as he continues to rack up double-doubles and strong performances.

Walter Proffitt led the Dons in scoring with 18 points, 3 rebounds, and 3 assists. Proffitt had been struggling a bit as he was shooting only 29% from three-point range in his past five games, but that changed tonight as the senior hit 5 of 8 shots from beyond the arc.

Matt Owen added 11 points and 3 steals. Jason Redick turned some heads with a career-high 7 assists to go along with 9 points. Redick may be making a case for seeing some time at the point guard position with backup point guard Jaime Barton struggling (32% FG, 24% 3PT).

The Dons have a week off before taking on a very strong Texas Christian squad, which is currently 5-1 on the year, their only loss coming at California.

FORT WORTH, TX - The San Francisco Dons (6-1) narrowly escaped Forth Worth to earn their seventh win of the year, but it wasn't easy. The Horned Frogs (6-2) played the Dons tough all game long and sent the game past regulation into overtime.

Fortunately, in the extra period the "Big Three" took over to lead the Dons to victory. Matt Owen scored several key overtime points en route to 19 points, 5 assists, and 3 steals. Walter Proffitt scored 18 points and grabbed 6 rebounds in this one while Owen Kole tallied yet another double-double with 16 points, 11 rebounds, and a pair of blocks. Kole sank the Dons's final four free throws to clinch the victory.

The Dons led 26-20 at halftime and led through most of the second half, but let their guard down towards the end of the game, allowing the Horned Frogs to storm back to force the overtime period.

"I think this should serve as a lesson to our guys to not let their guards down out there," beamed Coach Frizzell. "We got complacent out there and, as a result, almost lost this game."

The Dons travel to Evansville, Indiana to take on the Evansville Aces next Tuesday.
