    Providence (9-5) vs. #5 West Virginia (14-1)
    WVU Coliseum
    Morgantown, WV
    January 8th, 2022

No. 5 West Virginia found itself down 20 points in the second half this afternoon in Morgantown. It seemed that the Mountaineers (14-1, 3-1 Big East) never got out of bed for the noon start as they trailed 33-24 at halftime to the Providence Friars (9-5, 1-2 Big East) and began to unravel in the second half.

But then the Mountaineers seemingly were sparked.

The spark, it seemed, was WVU center Marquel Proffitt. Proffitt was scoreless in the first half as he had to sit out quite a bit of time due to foul trouble. But for what he hacked in the first half, he more than made up for in the second half as he scored 17 points (all in the second half) to go along with seven rebounds, three assists, and three blocks to lead the Mountaineers from 20 behind to a 76-73 victory.

Proffitt also shot seven-for-ten from the field and three-for-three from the charity stripe.

When asked about his team's improbable comeback, Coach Frizzell simply quoted the late Winston Churchill. "'Never give in, never give in, never; never; never; never.' That pretty much sums up our thought process in the second half," said the 15th-year head coach.

Justino Whitworth was the only other WVU starter to score in double-figures as he totaled 10 points and three rebounds. Barry George came off the bench to ad 11 points and four assists.

The Friars were led by Branduinn Famutimi's 17 points and four steals. Kalu Sowers recorded a double-double this afternoon as he tallied 11 points, 10 assists, and three steals.

The Mountaineers will face rival Pittsburgh in Pittsburgh next Thursday in the famed "Backyard Brawl". It will be the first of two meetings between the Panthers and the Mountaineers this year, the other being on January 31st in Morgantown.

            Petersen Events Center
            Pittsburgh, PA
            January 13th, 2022

The Backyard Brawl is always unpredictable. Historically, No. 4 West Virginia (15-2, 3-2 Big East) has also had a lot of trouble going into the Petersen Events Center and winning against their hated rivals, the Pittsburgh Panthers (10-8, 1-3 Big East). Those two factors culminated in a 62-59 upset by Pittsburgh over the Mountaineers this Thursday evening, giving the Panthers their first conference win and handing WVU its second loss in four games.

Pittsburgh took a 33-26 lead into the locker room at halftime and never looked back. The Mountaineers made a few runs in the second half, but their efforts turned out to be fruitless as the Panthers eked out the three-point upset victory, irregardless.

The Panthers were led by junior small forward Jameer Kinloch, who scored 15 points and grabbed six rebounds. His shooting left some to be desired, though, as he only hit five of his 21 field goal attempts. Mick Nicholson had a much more efficient game for the Panthers, hitting four of nine field goal attempts for 12 points and a pair of rebounds. No other Pittsburgh players reached double-figures in points or rebounding.

West Virginia was led by double-doubles by Allan Pena and Marquel Proffitt. Pena led the Mountaineers in scoring with 12 points and 10 rebounds. Proffitt tallied 11 points and 10 rebounds. Osei Forney also performed well, tallying 10 points and nine rebounds in the losing affair.

The Mountaineers will have a chance to redeem themselves tomorrow as they will make the trek down I-79 to take on the Marshall Thundering Herd at home tomorrow evening. The Herd upset the Mountaineers last year and WVU should be out for blood looking for redemption.

              vs.
              Marshall (11-8) vs. #4 West Virginia (15-2)
              WVU Coliseum
              Morgantown, WV
              January 14th, 2022

It was closer than expected and certainly much to close for comfort for most WVU fans in attendance, but No. 4 West Virginia (15-2) managed to evade disaster against Marshall (11-8), escaping with a 54-52 victory in Morgantown this Friday evening.

It was an ugly performance by both teams. Neither team recorded more than 49 shot attempts. Both teams hit 19 field goals. Marshall only had one player reach double-figures in scoring while WVU only had one.

Nevertheless, the Mountaineers came out on top. WVU led 26-17 at halftime and, though their first-half performance was lackluster offensively, their defense was top-notch and Marshall seemingly couldn't do anything. The second half was a whole different story, however, as Marshall's offense lit fire, relatively speaking, and the Herd managed to lead the Mountaineers during several points in the second half. In the end, Marshall would win the second half 35-28, but would lose the game 54-52.

Barry George came off the bench for a game-high 12 points and three assists in only 15 minutes. Marquel Proffitt totaled 10 points and six rebounds.

Leon Olson led the Thundering Herd in scoring with 10 points and three steals in 25 minutes.

West Virginia will travel to Queens, NY to take on the St. John's Red Storm on Sunday afternoon.

CH 2K8 is a ton of fun! The gameplay probably isn't that good compared to NBA 2K9-2K12 (I haven't bought any newer games), but you just can't beat the depth that CH 2K8's legacy mode offers you.

I'd never had dreamed that I would be able to keep up a legacy for four years and 14+ in-game seasons (and some of you may know that I am absolutely terrible at keeping my football, etc. dynasties going for very long), but that's how awesome legacy mode really is.

No. 4 West Virginia (16-2, 4-2 Big East) won its second game in a row this afternoon on the road as the Mountaineer dumped the St. John's Red Storm (13-5, 2-4 Big East) 70-50, handing the Red Storm their second loss in a row.

The Mountaineers were spurred by the tremendous exploits of senior shooting guard Justino Whitworth, who tallied 24 points, five rebounds, three assists, and four steals. Most impressively, he shot nine of 10 from the field and an impressive six for seven from beyond the arc.

Marquel Proffitt also played well for WVU, totaling 15 points and eight rebounds. Raynardo Admundson added 14 points and six assists.

Overall, the Mountaineers shot 49% from the field and 42% from long distance while holding St. John's to just 40% overall and 29% from three-point range. The Mountaineers also outrebounded the Red Storm 33-23.

Senior point guard Nate Ellis was the only member of the Red Storm to score more than eight points as he ended with 15 points and four rebounds.

West Virginia will take on the conference-leading Syracuse Orange next Saturday in Morgantown.

I 150% agree man, College Hoops is the best. I play it more than 2k12, and imo, Legacy is one of the best sport modes out there. I mean you could upset #1 Maryland and then get beaten by #9 Nevada in OT. You never know, and that's the best part

Absolutely true. I am a high school basketball coach and this game has a lot of detail built in it. The only real thing missing in this game is the ability for the guards to back their dribble up. The post game is great, for it is easy to use face up moves or back to the basket moves. I like the ball handling controls better than the other 2ks for it seems like you have more control over the moves you want to do.

The computer AI is very good, and helpside defense and double teams are terrific!

Agreed. It is cool that you are a HS basketball coach!

The game has a few flaws that you can exploit (as does just about any sports video game), but if do not purposely exploit these, it plays great.
