    November 16th, 2021

The Mountaineers advanced the final round of the Hawaiian Invitation this afternoon in Honolulu as No. 10 West Virginia (4-0) defeated Missouri (3-1) 65-56 behind a strong defensive effort.

Raynardo Admundson led the Mountaineers with 18 points and six assists while Marquel Proffitt tallied his fourth straight double-double with 10 points, 11 rebounds, and four steals. Allan Pena added 11 points, four rebounds, and three blocks.

Tron Liberty led Missouri in scoring with 16 points while junior guard Robin Dux added 13 points, six assists, and three steals.

"This is a huge victory for us," said Coach Frizzell. "Up to this point our schedule has been pretty light, but we finally got our first taste of a big-time opponent this afternoon and we played well. We struggled in the first half, but we began to establish ourselves in the second half and wrestled control away from Missouri."

With the win, West Virginia improves to 4-0 and will face off against #8 Duke in the Championship Game of the Hawaiian Invitational tomorrow.

      #8 Duke (3-1) vs. #10 West Virginia (5-0)
      Stan Sheriff Center
      Honolulu, HI
      November 17th, 2021

The West Virginia Mountaineers (5-0) defeated the Duke Blue Devils (3-1) 73-66 this afternoon to win the Hawaiian Invitational Title in Honolulu, HI. No. 8 Duke led 29-26 at halftime, but a strong shooting performance in the second half enabled the Mountaineers to outscore the Blue Devils 47-37 in the final period to win by seven.

Marquel Proffitt had another spectacular game, leading all scorers with 22 points and an impressive 11 rebounds. Overall, No. 10 West Virginia outrebounded the Blue Devils 40-26.

Allan Pena neared a double-double with 15 points and eight rebounds while Justino Whitworth drained a pair of treys to tally 10 points and four rebounds.

Duke hit 27 field goals compared to WVU's 21, but the Mountaineers held advantages in three-pointers and at the foul line. West Virginia drained eight of their 21 three-point attempts. Meanwhile, Duke only hit three of its 18 attempts. In addition, WVU hit 23 of its 28 attempts from the charity stripe while Duke only managed to attempt 12 foul shots, hitting nine of them.

"This is a huge win for us to give us some momentum," said Coach Frizzell. "Our non-conference schedule was largely on the weak side this year, but the Hawaiian Classic gave us a quality opponent in Missouri and then matched us up with a great opponent in Duke. And the weather wasn't too shabby for November either," said Frizzell, referring to the fact that the high was 35 in Morgantown yesterday while it was 89 in Honolulu.

Duke was led by Flowers' 13 points, five rebounds, and four steals.

The Mountaineers will take on Wisconsin-Green Bay on November 26th.

Just curious, do you guys prefer the game recaps to be italicized (as my previous recaps have been) or would you rather them not be (as in the Duke recap)?

Your boys are rolling so far. Can You take down the Big East Championship this year? I think it looks good both ways.

            I like them italicized.

Nice to see Duke back in the top 10 after missing the tourney.

Great win against Duke! And I didn't even notice about the whole italicized or thing anyways so it's whatever you want really.

I don't know. The Big East is very strong at the top this year, so it will be tough.

Alright, I will put the recaps back into italics in the future.

LOL, well now we are tied 1-1 as far as the italicizing. We need one more vote to break the tie in the defining feature of this legacy!

I should note that it can be a little easy to drive to the hoop, so don't abuse that. There's a few things in this game that the CPU just can't really stop well, no matter the sliders (it is terribly easy to break the CPU's press, for example), so you just have to try not to abuse these weaknesses.

No. 7 West Virginia (6-0) stayed perfect on the season this evening as the Mountaineers rolled Green Bay (2-4) 85-59.

WVU and Green Bay were tied at 31 at the half, but the Mountaineers would take charge in the second half, outscoring the Phoenix 54-28 behind a strong shooting performance.

"We struggled in the first half, but we really came on the second half," explained Coach Frizzell. "We were able to get in our backups late in the game, which was good for us to give them some valuable experience in a real-game situation."

Allan Pena led the Mountaineers in scoring with 14 points and four rebounds. Marquel Proffitt tallied 13 points and six rebounds in only 14 minutes while Justino Whitworth totaled 10 points, six rebounds, and three assists. Jorge Henderson came off the bench to add 11 points and four rebounds.

The Phoenix were led by Mardy Banjo, who scored 14 points to go along with three assists. Butch Swift totaled 13 points and five rebounds while C.J. McBride came off the bench to add 11 points and three boards.

The Mountaineers have seven days off before taking on the Northwestern Wildcats on December 4th.
