vs.
#5 West Virginia (29-9) vs. #5 Washington (27-10)
Reliant Stadium
Houston, TX
April 5th, 2021
West Virginia (29-9) has done it! In fitting fashion, the Mountaineers and the Washington Huskies (27-10) needed overtime to decide this one, but in the extra period, the Mountaineers came away with a 93-85 victory to claim their first national championship.
Senior guard Dinky Woods scored 25 points in his final game as a Mountaineer, including several key shots in the closing minutes. Woods also grabbed seven rebounds and collected three steals.
Raynardo Admundson totaled 10 points and nine assists while Allan Pena played well, scoring 17 points to go along with three rebounds, three assists, and three steals. Osei Forney tallied 12 points and three rebounds while Marquel Proffitt just missed out on a double-double with 13 points and eight rebounds. DeShaun Chatman came off the bench to score 11 points and grab three boards.
Washington was led by Senior point guard Stan Owensworth, who scored 27 points, grabbed five rebounds, and dished out five assists. Fred Hubbard scored 18 points, grabbed three rebounds, and totaled five assists while Emmanuel Wilkerson came off the bench to add 13 points to the Huskies' losing effort.
For Coach Frizzell, he finally claimed his first National Title after his fourth Final Four appearance in his 14th year of coaching. The 39-year old has reached the summit of the college basketball world. Where does he go from here?
"I'm just going to enjoy the victory for now," replied Coach Frizzell. "This is a huge win for this team and this program. We were left for dead by much of the sports media after our disappointing end to the regular season and our blowout loss in the Big East Tournament, but we never lost the faith.
"We played progressively better throughout the tournament and it all culminated in this final game, a game that would come down to overtime to decide it all. In the overtime period, we decided that we wanted the win more than [Washington] did and we got it done.
The Mountaineers finish the season 29-9 and win their first National Championship in school history.

Re: Coaching Legacy of James Frizzell (CH 2K8)
Three, but only one starter (Dinky Woods).
WVU will be awesome next year and probably has more "talent" than this year's National Title-winning team.
BTW, I noticed that the Princeton job is open after this season (the Princeton coach always takes a job somewhere else, which allows the job to open up). How ironic would that be? Back to square one!
I don't think I'm going to do that, though.Comment

Re: Coaching Legacy of James Frizzell (CH 2K8)
I don't think any jobs will open in the MWC, but there will be open jobs in the CAA and MAAC, which are both very respectable mid-major conferences. I don't think I'm necessarily even looking for a rebuilding job; I just kind of want to slide down to a lower-tier job where it is more difficult to recruit and such.
I don't really have much interest in any small conference jobs (aside from a few local NC teams), so that is why Princeton is out of the question. Though the Tigers failed to win the Ivy League last season, they still went 18-11 (9-5 Ivy League) and had the highest rating in the conference (80 OVR). And it's not as if any of my players from back in the day are left there now.
Time shall tell...
Thanks!
It was a long-time coming and it feels like I had a weight lifted off my soldiers with the victory.
It also feels like some of my motivation was sapped away, but I'm sure that's just temporary.Last edited by superjames1992; 12-29-2011, 12:19 AM.Comment

Re: Coaching Legacy of James Frizzell (CH 2K8)
As you can probably see, I decided to stick around at WVU.
BTW, I am not sure what is up with the Mercer game at the end of the year. I didn't see it when I was making up my schedule and let it slip through. Oh well.Comment
