South Florida (15-8) vs. #11 West Virginia (20-4)
    WVU Coliseum
    Morgantown, WV
    February 3rd, 2021

No. 11 West Virginia (20-4, 8-3 Big East) got back on track this afternoon at home against the South Florida Bulls (15-8, 3-7 Big East) in Morgantown as the Mountaineers took down the Bulls 94-87 in overtime.

West Virginia held a 38-32 halftime advantage and held a lead for the majority of the game, but South Florida made a comeback in the final minutes and sent the game to overtime tied at 77 points apiece.

West Virginia took control in the overtime period, however, outscoring the Bulls 17-10 to win by seven points.

The Bulls' comeback was led by junior guard Kevin Zachery, who scoring 25 points and grabbed seven rebounds for the Bulls. Clarence Watts and Londrick Paul also had solid games for the Bulls, scoring 19 and 18 points, respectively.

The key to the WVU victory came in the low post. Marquel Proffit and Osei Forney came to play and dominated the Bulls' defenders on the scoreboard and on the glass. Proffitt scored 27 points on 11-for-15 shooting and grabbed nine rebounds. Osei Forney totaled 16 points and five rebounds.

Raynardo Admundson tallied 14 points and four rebounds for the Mountaineers while Allan Pena contributed 13 points and seven boards.

West Virginia now has one week off before taking on the Notre Dame Fighting Irish in South Bend next Wednesday.

        vs.
#6 West Virginia (21-4) vs. Notre Dame (15-10)
        Edmund P. Joyce Center
        South Bend, IN
        February 10th, 2021

Marquel Proffitt silenced the crowd with 1.4 seconds left when he sank a hook shot from eight feet out to give the West Virginia Mountaineers (21-4, 9-3 Big East) a 62-61 victory over the Notre Dame Fighting Irish (15-10, 6-6 Big East).

Proffitt had a fine night, contributing 16 points, seven rebounds, and four steals, but none of his points were bigger than the final two of the game.

"If he doesn't hit that shot, we lose the game," said West Virginia head coach James Frizzell. "When we were inbounding the ball with just a few seconds left, we made a concerted effort to get him the ball in the closing seconds. Marquel is clutch we I knew he could make that shot.

"Worse case scenario is he gets double-teamed and is forced to dish the ball off to an open shooter, but that didn't happen tonight."

Osei Forney was the only other Mountaineer to have a respectable night as he scored 13 points and grabbed eight boards. He also hit three three-pointers in five attempts. Interestingly, those were his first three attempts from beyond the arc all season long.

"Raynardo [Admundson] passed me the ball and I was wide open, so I thought, 'Why not?' Once I sank the first bucket, I got from confidence and it really opened up my game. Hopefully, I can contribute from distance in future games and held to open up the paint down low."

West Virginia, as a team, show four-for-24 from beyond the arc. If you choose to not include Forney's three-for-five effort from distance, the Mountaineers shot one-for-19.

"It was a truly horrendous shooting effort," said Coach Frizzell. "But the bottom line is that we won."

Rans Peciukas and Dean Bruce led the Fighting Irish with 13 points apiece.

West Virginia will host Providence on Saturday.

Nice win against Notre Dame! I'm glad you got this back under way. Good luck with West Virginia, I'm excited to see how much damage you do in the NCAA Tournament.

I am not sure when Bracketology comes out, but it's bound to be soon.

I have two opponents left on my schedule that are currently ranked - Marquette (#1) and Louisville (#15).

Marshall is rated 80 OVR, but they are only 9-10 (3-6 C-USA) at this point in time. Our loss to them was unfortunate and "shouldn't have happened", but games between Marshall and WVU tend to be notoriously close, despite WVU generally fielding a vastly superior team in recent years (in real life).

The "rivalry" between Marshall and WVU in CH2K8 is dumbed down a bit, though, since the real game is known as the Capital Classic and is played at a neutral location, the Charleston Civic Center in downtown Charleston, WV.

              Thanks!

If you had asked me when we were 17-1, I would have thought that we had a very good chance at finally winning a national title.

At this point, however, we may not even make the Sweet Sixteen with some of the inconsistent play and mediocre teams we've been losing to lately. Hopefully, we can recover in these last six games of the season.

                vs.
Providence Friars (16-10) vs. #6 West Virginia (21-5)
                WVU Coliseum

                February 13th, 2021

Kelly Stapley grabbed five rebounds and scored 30 of his team's 75 points in his Providence Friars' 75-59 upset over the sixth-ranked West Virginia Mountaineers (21-5, 9-4 Big East) on Saturday. Truthfully, it is a bit disingenuous to call this game an upset as this is the second time this season that the Providence Friars (16-10, 5-8 Big East) have beaten the Mountaineers. Providence beat the Mountaineers 78-68 back in Providence, RI on January 18th to give the Mountaineers their second loss of the season.

Marquel Proffitt did all he could to keep West Virginia in the game. The junior center tallied a double-double with 16 points and 11 rebounds. Unfortunately for him and the Mountaineers, he was essentially a one-man show as no other Mountaineer got into double-digits scoring. Nevertheless, Raynardo Admundson played relatively well, totaling nine points and six assists this afternoon.

Osei Forney and Allan Pena combined to shoot two-for-18 from the floor for five points as both had what was unquestionably the worst game of their careers.

In addition to Stapley's heroic performance, the Friars were also boosted by Andry Granger's 14 points off the bench.

The Mountaineers have tomorrow off before a huge game at #1 Marquette on Monday. The Marquette game was highly anticipated a few weeks ago, but with the Mountaineers now having five losses, it is not quite as significant. Nevertheless, playing the #1 team in the nation should give any team reason to get up and play their best.

                    February 15th, 2021

After struggling in recent games, the eight-ranked West Virginia Mountaineers (21-6, 9-5 Big East) got their toughest opponent yet. The Mountaineers traveled to Milwaukee, WI to take on the #1 team in the land, the Marquette Golden Eagles (26-2, 13-1 Big East).

West Virginia led by as many as 11 points early on until midway through the first half when the Golden Eagles went on a run. Their run would culminate in a 34-25 halftime lead.

After a potentially fiery halftime speech, Marquette came out of the locker rooms on fire. The Golden Eagles absolutely lit up the Mountaineers in the final period, outscoring WVU 51-28 en route to an embarrassing 85-53 romp of the #8 team in the country.

For West Virginia, it was their second loss in a row and their fifth loss in their last nine games. For Marquette, it was their 11th victory in a row after losing at Connecticut on January 10th. This was truly a game representative of two teams going in opposite directions. Just a month ago, this game looked poised to face two of the top teams in the country against one another. Instead, it was a snoozer.

Marquette was led by Max Dilligard, who came off the bench to score 16 points. Senior Scottie Clemons scored 10 points and grabbed nine boards while Seth Sloan tallied 13 points and two rebounds.

Marquel Proffitt performed well in the loss, totaling 15 points, six rebounds, and a career-high five blocks. Unfortunately, his performance was about the only positive that a WVU fan or player could take away from this game.

West Virginia has not won a game by more than 10 points since it blew out an 11-13 San Francisco team 79-42 on December 27th. In that same span, the Mountaineers have lost by more than 16 points three times and by more than 25 points twice.

The road will only get more difficult from here on out for the Mountaineers. WVU will take on rival Pittsburgh on the road on Sunday, the 21st, and host #20 Louisville on February 27th. It is likely that WVU will be the underdog in both of these games. Thereafter, West Virginia will close out the season against two sub-.500 teams in DePaul and Georgetown.

Man I was looking forward to this game. 20 turnovers will kill ya every time though.

Yep. I felt good in the first half, then everything just fell apart in the second half. Everything went wrong...

The reports are "unconfirmed". Take of that what you will.

The simple way to stop this trainwreck is to POUND PITT INTO THE GROUND. If we do that, everything will take care of itself!

                              February 21st, 2021

The Mountaineers (22-6, 10-5 Big East) responded the best way they could to the disastrous outing in Marquette last Monday. Today, No. 8 West Virginia went into the Petersen Events Center and smacked the Pittsburgh Panthers (17-8, 9-5 Big East) square in the face. The Mountaineers smoked the Panthers from start to finish and the Panthers never really even made it a game.

With the lead, which blossomed to as many as 30 points at one point, Coach Frizzell was able to put in his backups for the majority of the second half as the Mountaineers cruised to an 80-62 victory in the basketball version of the historic Backyard Brawl.

"It feels so good to get a win over a solid team and the fact that the team we beat so handily is Pitt makes it even sweeter," said Coach Frizzell. "I hope we can keep it up against Louisville next week."

The Mountaineers were led by Justino Whitworth, who came off the bench to lead all teams in scoring with 18 points off of seven-for-eight shooting. Raynardo Admundson totaled 15 points and three assists while Dinky Woods and Marquel Proffitt scored 13 and 12 points, respectively.

Senior shooting guard Bennet Tamayo lead the Panthers with 15 points and three assists.

The Mountaineers have five days off before taking on Louisville next Saturday. The Cardinals are fresh off a 90-64 pasting of #1 Marquette. Note that the Mountaineers lost to Marquette 85-53 earlier this week.
