Forget the conference tournament. I'm ready for the game of the year: Mercer vs. WVU

Talk about a fight to the death

      It definitely looks that way.

As of now, I believe 10 are in (Rutgers is not), but that may go up or down depending on what happens from here on out.

Interestingly, the Big East is only the #3 conference by RPI (the Big 12 is #1 and the ACC is #2).

LOL, it should be a real tight game. I expect a fight to the death. Mercer has got a REALLY strong team this year (LOL).

        vs.
        Cincinnati (18-12) vs. #4 West Virginia (23-6)
        WVU Coliseum
        Morgantown, WV
        February 26th, 2022

Justino Whitworth scored 28 points as his West Virginia Mountaineers (23-6, 11-6 Big East) powered past the Cincinnati Bearcats (18-12, 5-12 Big East) 92-75 behind a 59-point second half performance.

The Bearcats took an early lead and actually led No. 4 West Virginia 41-33 at halftime. It looked like the Bearcats may earn the victory, which they would need if they wanted to have any shot at making the NCAA Tournament. Unfortunately for them, WVU turned it on in the second half as the Mountaineers outscored Cincinnati 59-34 in the final frame to earn 17-point victory that made the game seem like a cakewalk.

"We had to fight hard, but we really showed what we are capable of in the second half," explained Coach Frizzell. "We struggled on offense and especially on defense in the first half, but we really picked it up in the second half. 59 points in one half is ridiculous. There's been games this year where we didn't score that much in the entire game!"

As already noted, Justino Whitworth led all scorers with 28 points and three assists. Allan Pena also played well, to the tune of 18 points and four rebounds. Marquel Proffitt recorded 16 points, nine rebounds, three steals, and three blocks while Daryan Fitzwater came off the bench to add a career-high 11 points, including three treys.

The Bearcats were led by a strong performance in their front court. Rick Brand led Cincinnati with 16 points, five rebounds, and three assists. Edmund Appleby totaled 15 points and four rebounds while Juan Forbes just missed out on a double-double as he ended with 14 points and nine boards. Point guard Adam Wheeler also performed admirably as he recorded 10 points, five assists, and three rebounds.

WVU will take on Mercer next Tuesday and will finish out the regular season next Saturday at Georgetown. The Mercer game will be Senior Night.

              LOL, I'd better fix that.

It is interesting, though, that, for example, UNC isn't that good at all. I believe they are rated in the low 80s and only have around a .500 record right now.

This is just a minor thing, but I have turned down the USER close shot, dunk, and layup sliders one notch. Things seemed to be getting a bit easy inside, although that may be more of a result of having two seven-footers on the floor at the same time than anything else.

Thats one thing that annoys me in my legacies. Usually UNC, Duke and Kansas are so bad that they dont even make the tourney. USC and Arizona are always powerhouses.

Back to topic. I predict strong finish to the regular season after that Cincinnati win. Maybe you can ride with that in the tourneys.

Yeah, some teams fall off the map and other rise (USF and Duquesne, for example). I think it adds a bit of spice to it, although it is a bit strange.

                              Mercer (8-23) vs. #4 West Virginia (24-6)

                              March 1st, 2022

As expected, No. 4 West Virginia (24-6) easily blew out the Mercer Bears (8-23) this evening on Senior Night in Morgantown. The Bears kept the game close for the first few minutes before WVU went on a huge run to take a 51-21 halftime lead. The Mountaineers would continue to dominate in the second half, allowing Coach Frizzell to empty the bench in the second half as the Mountaineers would go on to win 91-51.

Osei Forney led the Mountaineers with 13 points and six rebounds. Allan Pena also scored 13 points to go along with three rebounds and five assists. Marquel Proffitt was the only other double-digit scorer as the senior center, playing in his final home game, ended with 10 points and six rebounds.

For Marquel Proffitt, Raynardo Admundson, and Justino Whitworth it was their final home game of their decorated careers. In addition to Proffitt's performance, Admundson tallied six points and three assists while Justino Whitworth ended with eight points and three rebounds.

Travon Gunn led Mercer with nine points.

The Mountaineers will close out the season on Saturday at Georgetown in what should be another easy victory.

Senior night is always a memorable one. Who are you going to miss the most ? Proffitt seemed to be pretty consistent all year long.
