Re: Coaching Legacy of James Frizzell (CH 2K8)
Since I now do the no-switching rule and alternate players every defensive position, at least I now get to experience foul trouble. I used to hardly ever have it as an issue when I used to always play on-ball defense, which is one of the reason I changed to alternating no-switch. Plus, it makes my players' defensive ratings matter a lot more.
It is interesting that Rod Barnes, USF's current head coach, is 64 years old and will presumably be retiring sometime soon. If I ever get tired of WVU, that might be an option to go back to USF and try to win a national title.

NCAA Tournament - Sweet Sixteen
Top-seeded West Virginia (36-1) blasted its way past fourth-seeded San Francisco (27-8) this evening 74-39 to advance to the Elite Eight. The Mountaineers stomped all over USF from the game's tipoff as the Dons' offense was never able to gain any rhythm.
The Dons shot just 13/53 (25%) from the field and were outrebounded by West Virginia 43-26. West Virginia did not have a hot night from the field, either (42% on field goals), but their rebounding advantage was substantial and they drained 10 three-pointers.
Deno Woodards hit five of West Virginia's 10 three-pointers tonight as he scored 17 points and added three boards and two blocks. O.J. Palmer was West Virginia's only other double-figures scorer as he totaled 15 points, seven rebounds, and three blocks.
7'1" freshman center Lou Mombollet was the lone bright spot for San Francisco tonight as he tallied 12 points, seven rebounds, and two blocks in the Don's loss.
#7-seeded Iowa defeated #3-seeded Clemson in the other East Regional Semifinal this evening and will face the top-seeded Mountaineers on Sunday in the East Regional Final. The winner will advance to the 2030 Final Four in Indianapolis, IN.

NCAA Tournament - Elite Eight
West Virginia (37-1) is headed back to the Final Four! For the fourth time in five seasons, the Mountaineers will be headed back to that hallowed place and will look to pick up their third national title in the past decade next week in Indianapolis.
Tonight, the No. 1-seeded Mountaineers defeated the Iowa Hawkeyes (24-10) 72-51 to win the East Regional Final. The Hawkeyes were only a No. 7 seed in this tournament, but defeated a couple strong teams, Wisconsin and Clemson, to make it this far.
Tonight, however, the Hawkeyes never really had a shot. West Virginia seized a double-digit lead halfway through the first half after Fred Joiner hit back-to-back corner threes. The Mountaineers led 37-23 at halftime, but really pulled away early in the second half. The Mountaineers went on an 8-1 run in the first three minutes of the second period to push the lead to 21 points after Fred Joiner picked off a pass and ran it home for a thunderous dunk on the other end. Five minutes later, Happy Olson pushed the lead to 31 with a layup to give the Mountaineers a 59-28 advantage.
From there, the Mountaineers put it on cruise control and WVU head coach James Frizzell emptied the benches as the Mountaineers glided to a 72-51 victory.
"It's great to be heading back to the Final Four again," said Frizzell. "There's no doubt in my mind that we are the best team in America right now and I hope we play that way in Indy. We were really disappointed after getting bounced in the regional semifinal last year, and we're on a real mission right now. I haven't seen this team play this kind of inspired defense that we have displayed in this tournament all year."
Fred Joiner led the Mountaineers in scoring with 17 points and three assists. Predrag Gabler hit four three-pointers to end with 14 points while Deno Woodards added 10 points and three boards. Armondo Whelchel also came off the bench to add 13 points, seven rebounds, three steals, and two blocks.
Junior point guard Alan Tucker scored 14 points to lead the Hawkeyes in scoring. Dugan Lamptey was the only other Hawkeye to make double-figures as he ended with 11 points and four boards.
West Virginia will face the West Regional Champion Virginia Cavaliers in the Final Four next week. The No. 1-seeded Cavaliers defeated Arizona State in the West Regional Final to earn their right to the Final Four.

Re: Coaching Legacy of James Frizzell (CH 2K8)
Yep! Looks like what most of you wanted!
Thanks! Hopefully, we can win this one. I've gotten to a lot of Final Fours in my years and haven't necessarily excelled once there (two Championships in seven Final Four appearances prior to this year). Actually, I guess that's not bad given that a team statistically has a 25% chance of winning the Final Four, all else being equal (normalizing all the teams as being equal to one another, which obviously isn't true).
Thanks!Comment

NCAA Tournament - National Semifinal
No. 1 West Virginia (38-1) is headed back to the NCAA Championship Game! The Mountaineers are 2-0 in the title game with head coach James Frizzell at the helm and they'll be back again this season as they defeated fellow No. 1 seed Virginia 65-56 in tonight's national semifinal matchup.
The Cavaliers (31-6) never led in this one as West Virginia hit the first basket of the game when Nile Stevenson nailed a turnaround jumper from the key. The Mountaineers eventually built a double-digit lead and led 35-24 at the halftime break.
Virginia wasn't deterred, however. The Cavaliers came storming back midway through the second half. They pulled to within 51-48 with 7:45 remaining in the game, but WVU's Fred Joiner hit a corner three-pointer on the subsequent Mountaineers' possession to push the lead back to six points. The Cavaliers would never get any closer from there until the final buzzer sounded and a nine-point WVU victory was finalized.
"It's great to be back in the big game again," beamed WVU's Frizzell. "What an atmosphere we had here tonight. We had a lot of fans here and it was just a great experience. We played one of the best teams in the nation tonight and we definitely played as well as we could have hoped to. [Virginia] is one of the best shooting teams in the nation and I was really impressed by how we played defensively against their deadly shooting attack."
Virginia averages 86 points per game and shoots nearly 41% from three-point range on the season, but the vaunted WVU defense showed up in a big way today, holding the Cavaliers to just 56 points and 4/16 (25%) from three-point range.
Senior small forward Deno Woodards did all he could to will the Mountaineers to victory. Woodards has struggled this season and has been up-and-down shooting performances this year. However, he certainly didn't want his career to end in the national semifinal as he drained three three-pointers and scored 22 points to go along with three steals. Fred Joiner also played magnificently as he totaled 18 points and five boards. Senior power forward Nile Stevenson also had a respectable outing with 11 points, six rebounds, and two blocks.
Outside of those three, the Mountaineers really struggled shooting the basketball. O.J. Palmer is usually dependable, but tonight he was shut out of the scoring column and went 0/7 from the field. He did make up for it to some degree on defense and on the glass, however, as he grabbed 16 rebounds and blocked three shots.
Junior shooting guard Milt Ball led Virginia with 19 points and five rebounds. No other Cavalier reached double-figures in scoring or rebounds.
In almost storybook fashion, West Virginia will face the only team that has defeated them this season in the National Final. Louisville defeated Duquesne 80-63 to also earn the right to play for it all on Monday evening.
West Virginia and Louisville have clashed three times already this seaosn, with West Virginia owning a 2-1 advantage, including the head-to-head win in the Big East Tournament Championship Game. The first game was an 85-78 WVU victory in Morgantown. The second matchup was a 64-58 Louisville victory in Louisville. WVU got revenge in the third matchup in Madison Square Garden with a 71-62 victory.
Each previous game between the Cardinals and the Mountaineers has been a great display of basketball and nip-and-tuck action. It should be a great one when the two teams take the floor and play for it all on Monday night. Unlike in Madison Square Garden last month, tonight it is the Cardinals who will have revenge on their minds.
