        NCAA Tournament - Elite Eight

Dedrick Packevicius scored 20 points and hit six three-pointers to lead top-seeded West Virginia (34-3) to a South Regional Title and a trip to the Final Four with an 81-62 victory over Big East Conference foe Connecticut (30-8) this evening in Detroit.

The Huskies and Mountaineers were engaged in a back-and-forth battle until the waning moments of the second half, when the Mountaineers hit five consecutive three-pointers (three by Myron DeLeon and two by Dedrick Packevicius) to go on a 15-0 run between the 4:07 and 2:38 mark that turned a slim 58-56 lead into a 73-56 blowout. After the Mountaineers missed their next three-point attempt, Shannon Edwards hit another three-point shot on the following possession to cap off an 18-0 run that put the Mountaineers up by 20 points, and they easily held on for the 19-point victory.

The Mountaineers shot 42% (15/36) from three-point range this evening while holding Connecticut to 32% (6/19) from deep. WVU also outrebounded the Huskies 44-30.

Nik Buscher overcame shooting struggles to end with 12 points and 17 rebounds for West Virginia. Shannon Edwards hit a pair of threes and scored 12 points to go along with four rebounds and Myron DeLeon hit four threes to score 12 points.

Burton Boyd scored 11 points for the Huskies and Vincent Danielson scored 11 points and grabbed five rebounds.

"This is a huge win for us to beat UConn for the third time this season," remarked West Virginia head coach James Frizzell in a postgame interview. "We're playing really well now, and we beat one of the best teams in the country tonight. I really like our chances going forward."

West Virginia will advance to the Final Four, where they will face Virginia Tech, the No. 1 seed out of the Midwest Regional. West Virginia blew out Virginia Tech 97-71 earlier this season in Morgantown. No. 1 overall-seeded Texas will also advance to the Final Four as the East Regional Champions. The undefeated 36-0 Longhorns will face No. 2-seeded Boston College, the West Regional Champions. West Virginia has also faced Boston College this season, notching an 80-64 victory over Boston College in Chestnut Hill.

Nik Buscher totaled 22 points, 10 rebounds, and four blocks on 9/11 shooting to lead West Virginia to the National Championship Game with a 77-69 victory over Virginia Tech this evening in the National Semifinal.

Haha, yeah. I’d have been kind of disappointed to face anyone else in the National Championship Game.

NCAA Tournament - National Championship Game

West Virginia senior shooting guard Dedrick Packevicius' three-point attempt clanked off the front of the iron as time expired and the Texas Longhorns (38-0) capped off one of the most dominating seasons in the history of college basketball with a 90-88 victory over West Virginia (35-4) this evening in Indianapolis.

Packevicius' shot would have won the game and the National Championship for the Mountaineers, but it wasn't to be. His one shining moment faded into the background noise as the Longhorns rushed the court after the missed shot, drowning in confetti which rained down from the rafters. Packevicius fell to his knees in despair.

“It hurts, man," said Packevicius after the game. "To have victory so close and to choke in the moment is really rough. This just isn't the way I imagined my career here at WVU ending."

The Mountaineers dominated down low, taking advantage of their size advantage on the offensive end. Nik Buscher scored 22 points and grabbed nine rebounds and Skip Bradford totaled 19 points and five rebounds. Myron DeLeon also added 13 points and five rebounds.

However, the Texas juggernaut ultimately couldn't be stopped. The Longhorns trailed West Virginia 43-37 at the half, but were not phased as they erupted for 53 second half points and shot 51% (33/65) from the field, 46% (6/13) from three-point range, and 90% (18/20) from the free throw line.

Teddy Buckman scored 23 points and grabbed six rebounds on 10/15 shooting for the Longhorns. Stuart Carson added 15 points and eight rebounds and Kenneth President tallied 13 points and five assists. Zabian Brittian tallied an impressive double-double with 11 points and 12 assists. Dale Foster scored 15 points from off the bench.

"What we did this year was amazing," beamed Texas head coach Tron Cannon after the game. "To not lose a game is something I never would have dreamed possible at the beginning of the season, and to see it all culminate tonight is a dream come true."

Tonight's national title is Cannon's first national championship. Cannon is in his 11th year as head coach of the Longhorns.

"We played well, they were just better," explained West Virginia head coach James Frizzell. "We had a chance to win there at the end, and we just couldn't execute. It's frustrating, but you win some and you lose some, and tonight we lost. To make it to this point is an impressive feat, so we'll take our loss and move on and work towards next season. This Texas team is a historically great college basketball team. There’s no shame in losing to them."
